HeatherL
We were in the middle of a science experiment and I had my 5 year old stirring a bowl of salt water. I was getting more supplies and I hear "yuck!" He said he tasted a spoonful of the salt. His tummy now hurts. I have looked up on line to see if this is dangerous, but can't find anything except people asking on yahoo if you will die immediately (most answered no). I have been having him drink water, but he says his tummy still hurts. What else can I do? Should we be going to the doctor? Thanks!! Starr
Call the poison control number. I think he'll be fine but if you call you'll be sure and happy. :grouphug:
TranquilMind
He will be fine. Kids get more upset the more we react.
Trillian
A spoonful of salt? He should be fine, just keep having him drink water, not gulping or he'll feel sick from that. The only danger I can think of is dehydration, but he has fresh water so it's not really a concern.
roanna
I randomly saw this post. Heavily salted water will make you have a few bowel movements so I would imagine that's what will happen. How much is too much I don't know. I'd call the doctor or poison control just to make sure.
Parrothead
I wouldn't worry too much. I knew a person who would do this when we were kids.
sparrow
My son ate a chunk of salt dough when were making ornaments years ago. He puked on my kitchen floor not too long afterwards. You could always put a quick call into your doctor, if you're concerned.
Jean in Newcastle
At the most, salt water is an emetic and/or laxative. He'll be fine.
HeatherL
Thanks everyone. we had used 1/2 cup of salt and it had all settled on the bottom of the bowl, so he scooped up mostly salt and very little water. I called the doctor and they told me to call poison control. Everyone said to just watch him and make sure there are no severe reactions/stomach pain and to keep pushing water on him. I never would have thought of poison control... I did get a little jumpy when they asked for my full name, son's name, phone number... I asked why and she said just so she could follow up with me. It's that paranioa of them comming after a homeschool mom... The positive to come out of this is that he has learned a good lesson of following directions durring science! Jerico
I had to call poison control the other day as my 9 month old was eating a silica gel packet. It is unnerving but something happens to every family!
