Scarlett
I posted this on the General Education forum before I realized we have a new chat forum... I need a new microwave heating bag....anyone have a favorite and where did you get it? I couldn't find them in Wal-Mart... Also does anyone use the cherry pit ones? I need it for my face/jaw/neck when TMJ flares up.
dbmamaz
i was introduced to these by my midwife - but she just called it a rice sock - so the last time I needed one (massive leg cramps after an injury due to dh's mistake, seriously lol) i make dh get one of his (white sports) socks, fill it with rice, and tie off the end . . . throw it in the microwave. AWESOME and cheap lol of course, it does kinda smell like rice right after it comes out of the microwave, esp here where its ALWAYS humid! I keep meaning to try this...you can add scents to it also...lavender or whatever.
TexasRachel
I made one of these for when I was in labor with DS1 (the only one I labored with). I heated it up so much we burnt the rice. The nurse asked me to stop using it because it smelled so bad, but I wouldn't because it felt so good. I know there are other fillings you cam use though, but I'm not sure what. Ugh, I'm sensitive to smells and the thought of burned rice makes me ill. LOL Dh just called me from the health food store...he found one for 10 bucks that has camomille and lavender scent in it! I hope it is big enough, but for $10 it is worth a try.

Brown rice might smell a little less...ricey (that is so a word!). I've read some warnings suggesting that brown rice is more likely to spoil, but my brown rice sock has held up admirably. It just smells kind of yeasty. Any Canadians or northern-US types remember those ubiquitous tv ads for Magic Bag? At Christmas time, Canadian stores would push this heated bag really, really hard. The commercials would play endlessly. Magic Bag! Delight your family with Magic Bag! Buy two! I kind of miss Magic Bag commercials.
Lara in Colo
I got mine years ago at Walgreens. It is called the Bed Buddy and I just checked, they still sell it. I think it has rice in it, but I tried to make one once and all I did was burn the rice. This is around $10-15 at Walgreens. When it gets dirty, I cut the sock, wash it and refill and sew it. (Child put it in the microwave that was dirty --ick!) Lara here it is on Amazon so you can see it. http://www.amazon.com/Carex-Bed-Buddy-Cold-Pack/dp/B000KBNPQ0

Petrichor
You can also use dry beans. Add a few drops of essential oil if you desire.
kitten18
Thank you! Dh is on his way home with one...I hope it has a removable cover that I can wash. My mom always put a sock over the bed buddy as a cover. She would just hand sew it on with a few stitches.
Calm37
My mom always put a sock over the bed buddy as a cover. She would just hand sew it on with a few stitches. We just throw our Bed Buddy's in a pillowcase. We have two - one for the freezer. It is nice to have a cold one for a migraine.

Live2Ride
You could use wheat or oat groats. I like wheat...it helps that I have a good amount of it, lol
brownie
I've made a number of my own. We call them belly bags for my son. And it takes YEARS to burn the rice. In fact the batch I made 4 Christmases ago is still fine, but I did make them in a sort of tan denim material? Maybe being less porous than the sock helps? I do recall my previous sock burning eventually. I sewed together 2 squares of material, put the rice in and finished sewing it up. I also put a pillow case (I made out of flannel) on it to protect it during use so it could be washed. I plan to make a new batch this year as gifts!
