Miller/Levine Biology...How many books do I need???

Recommended Posts

I'm confused...

I purchased the Dragonfly edition. This is what I've bought so far:

Textbook

Reading and Study Workbook A

*Adapted* Reading and Study Workbook B (why "adapted?" & is it different from the "non-adapted" Reading & Study Workbook A?)

Laboratory Manual A

Laboratory Manual B

Kolbe Course Plans & Tests

Kolbe Biology Answer Key

Prentice Hall Biology - Student Edition (is this a lab book?) I haven't rec'd this book yet so I can't look in it.

Is this too much? Do we really need all this? I couldn't find this all on one website so I was going between two or three sites, and it got confusing...very confusing.

Any been-there-done-that help would be GREATLY appreciated! And don't hold back... If I bought too much, please tell me! If there is something else I need (like, where are the answers to these books??), please tell me that, too.

Thank you!

We will be doing Miller-Levine for th first time this year. I have the Dragonfly edition textbook, the Kolbe plans, and The Illustrated Guide to Home Biology Experiments along with their kit. In the Kolbe materials is a paper you sign and send in that gives you online access, which has more material.

This is all I have, I hope that's enough!

You might try getting the teacher editions from Pearson. I have recently gotten the Macaw version and that is where I purchase my teacher's editions from. (Pearson's homeschool site.) As far as the student edition I believe it is another copy of the textbook. I would also make use of biology.com. Wish I was more help.

You may have bought more than you need, but don't panic! If they are already on the way, look them over, use what you want, and resell the rest. As far as where to get the teacher editions with answer keys, you can find them online at Amazon, Abe's Books, Alibris, etc. Just Google search for the ISBN, which you can find on the publisher's website.

Textbook

Reading and Study Workbook A This will be very helpful. Your dc can fill in the blanks while reading, at the end of the reading, or as a review before testing.

*Adapted* Reading and Study Workbook B (why "adapted?" & is it different from the "non-adapted" Reading & Study Workbook A?) I think this one is sort of like the A version, just simpler. A is pretty detailed, so B might be good if you prefer just a "highlights" review.

Laboratory Manual A

Laboratory Manual B I don't know how this differs from A.

Kolbe Course Plans & Tests

Kolbe Biology Answer Key

Prentice Hall Biology - Student Edition (is this a lab book?) I haven't rec'd this book yet so I can't look in it. - This sounds like the student text again.

The A & B versions cover the same material. The "B" versions are easier, done at a lower level. I haven't seen the workbooks, but had access to both A & B tests. The B tests were more straight knowledge and had no essays. The A tests included application questions, more short answer questions, and essays.

Thank you to everyone who answered! I really appreciate your suggestions and information.

I have been so frustrated about trying to find the TE for the 2006 Dragonfly edition that I had to leave my house to run a few errands and get some fresh air (which included a stop at Starbucks...). I thought at that point that I had made the decision to send back all these books and purchase the latest edition; basically to keep it simple.

I got home and found all your responses and it made me reconsider...

Momto2Ns, where did you find the tests? Is this another book I need to buy? lol

Does anyone know where I can buy the 2006 Dragonfly teachers edition? If you do, and if it isn't too much trouble, can you please send me a link?

Also, if I do send back all these books and decide to buy the latest edition, would you recommend I buy the books directly from Pearson? And if so, why? I need to make a decision and get this off my plate.

Thank you, everyone!

Ok, I think I actually found what I need at Pearson's website. I didn't see "Earlier Editions" before and once I clicked, it listed 2006 as an option. I found the TE as well as a book of tests.

So, here is the final question, I swear... :)

Is it better to have the latest edition? After all this, my husband isn't all that excited about having a book that's 6 years old... But how old is the information, and is it worth it to send everything back and re-purchase the most current edition? If I looked at them side-by-side, how much better is the latest and greatest?

Any opinions? Any btdt advice?

Thank you!

The tests came free with the new edition. I didn't have the dragonfly. The biggest difference is in the coverage of classification and evolution. The clade system and cladograms are the dominant classification system covered in the new book. There may have been other changes, but that is the main one.

In case you haven't seen the instructions for ordering M/L new, you buy the student text, then you get the TM, tests and lots of online resources all free along with it by following these instructions:

Hopefully others will have a different experience than what Dana had. The updated edition just came out earlier this year, and they didn't have all of the supplements ready. I think some are still in the works, but the key ones are done.

Update for everyone else:

I spoke to a product specialist at Pearson and she confirmed that I was able to get the teacher's access pack for free.

Here is what I had to do:

1. Open an Oasis account (ie, purchasing account with Pearson).

2. Fill out the homeschool affidavit (linked when you open the account)

3. Wait for the confirmation email that your account has been approved. (If you don't get a confirmation within 48 hours, email them...I kept waiting and never heard back. Turns out they never got my original affidavit and I had to resubmit it. It went through within 24 hours the second time.)

4. The confirmation email will have a user id, password, and discount code on shipping if you place the order within 30 days.

5. Place your order. Be sure to have the exact ISBN number for the version of the book you want. There are many many versions! (If you're not sure, check here and here.) I ordered the student textbook (on level) with biology.com 6-year student access. ISBN: 9780133690095

6. Add the teacher access pack ISBN: 0133689964

It will show up as $299.95. Do not panic. Click on the button "Special Terms." Scroll down and click the free option (I think it was option A, but please double check.) Update your cart. Verify that the teacher's pack is now at $0.

7. Check out as usual.

Hope this helps! If anyone goes through this process and has trouble, PM me and I can give you the name and extension number of the product specialist I spoke to.

You should know the interface on the website is terrible and it take a bit to figure out how to set it up, but it is worth the effort.

  • 2 weeks later...

I think I was answering some of your questions on one of the other threads...Do you have this all sorted out now? If you click on the tag below (you have to be signed in to see it) "miller levine biology" there might be more information that could be helpful....
