annlaura
The boy standing up, not you. ;) My almost 3yo shows interest in trying to use the toilet standing up like his big brother, but refuses sitting. Has anyone had this work with a little guy?
amy g.
It never occurred to me to NOT teach him standing up. I bought little paper targets for him to hit. Since then, I have heard that cheeriness work just as well.
Lovin Learnin
One of my sons potty trained while standing, but that was because he was fearful of the toilet. He did fine with #1, but it took FOREVER to be comfortable sitting so he could learn #2. Good luck. Either way he will get there.
wonderchica
When I taught preschool for 2-3 year olds, none of my little boys sat to pee. It's more fun to stand up. I usually had a girl or two give it a shot too, albeit unsuccessfully ;) Throw some Cheerios in there!
jelbe5
My son with autism never stands up. Dad was and continues to be too busy to work with him on this so it fell to me. Now I really don't care if he never learns. As it is, he always goes into a stall and locks the stall door. So I feel he is a little "safer" when he is alone in the men's room. :D

redsquirrel
my boys sat down when they were little. It wasn't a big deal. They stand now that they are taller than the potty. They still sometimes sit. I don't see how this is a problem. My dh likes to sit down and pee sometimes as well. He says it's the only time he gets to sit in peace and quiet all day.
Pamela H in Texas
What I did was used a stool and had him hold the lid up. I have potty trained all but one kid (my 4yo) that way. It is *much* easier at daycares though because you can skip the stool since the potties are so little.
BigMamaBird
Our son was the same way. He wanted to stand like Daddy and didn't want to sit. So we just let him stand. LOTS more cleaning up! But I figured, using the potty was using the potty, as long as he was doing it, I didn't care about his position.
annlaura
Isn't it funny? My older DS started sitting, and it never occurred to me to let him try standing until he was tall enough. But my younger just hopped up on the stool. He hasn't actually pottied yet, but if he wants to try, it's fine with me. I was planning to wait before starting, but he saw Mater pull-ups and Thomas underpants and was inspired. lol. Maybe I'll try the cereal targets. Thanks all! MrsBasil
We had him sit at first, because he was resistant to using the potty and has issues with being "messy" or"dirty". Once he got used to that we transitioned him by having him go in the bathroom with DH to see how daddy did it, used Cheerios for target practice, and....let him mark trees in the backyard. It worked in a week. #2. was a bit more difficult, so I bribed with m&ms and it took about 2 weeks.
8circles
Good God why would you want to? Let them learn that one on their own - hopefully not until they're old enough to properly clean the bathroom.
Grover
DS learned sitting down - he wasn't tall enough to reach and didn't want to stand on a stool. It's only very recently that he's decided to stand up (which he now does most of the time). It caused issues at one preschool who tried to pressure him into standing, resulting in wet pants for the first time in over a year when he tried to hold on... other than that (and that wasn't the only issue we had with that centre), he's never had a problem. Heather in Neverland
It never occurred to me to teach them sitting down. I potty trained six boys standing up. :iagree: except that I trained two that way not six. :tongue_smilie:
Melissa in Australia
I trained all my boys to stand. They were mostly trained to go outside aiming at the lemon tree. all mine were trained before they were 2 with no problems. We had a little turtle stool that they could stand on to get to the right hight for the toilet.
Mommee & Baba
My son learned to potty sitting down. Once he started to walk in and see daddy going potty he wanted to try too! Now he stands up for #1 without any issues. He RARELY sits for #1, unless he's feeling rather lazy and that happens maybe once or twice in a month.
