Sarah CB
Reading: K - 100 Easy Lessons, then move into reading real books and talking about them, TOG and TTC help with this Writing: narration and copywork until beginning CW Aesop in grade 3. Continue with CW through high school. Grammar: Ugh. Right now I really like FLL for grades 1 and 2. I'm planning on FLL for grade 3. I've tried a few things (Abeka, R&S, Analytical Grammar) with older dd, but right now she's doing Harvey's with CW and that seems to be working. So the ongoing plan *might* be FLL for 1, 2, 3, then move into CW and do Harvey's along with it. Handwriting: I'm pretty happy with Handwriting for a Reason and then phasing it out when the letter formation is coming naturally. Spelling: I think that will depend on the child. I didn't do any spelling at all with the eldest because she never needed it. I'd love to do SWR with the boys but I never seem to find the time to do it. Instead, I've got ds (2nd grade) doing the Evan-Moore spelling book and I'm pretty happy with that - so is he.
Pster
hmmm - I may not be much help - I'm considering a bunch of programs but don't know what to do! Every time I think I have it nailed down I read a post about something else which has me reading up on that! Grammar: right now....finish FLL1/2 in 3rd - grammar is covered in WT1 in 4th - possibly start Growing with Grammar? Phonics: right now....working in ETC bks (finish off series) Writing: right now....doing Draw, Write Now; Story Starters; narrations; journals; etc in 3rd - WT1 (and whatever else we throw in - if anything) -would also like to start "How to Report on Books" (by Evan-Moore) to cover main character, characteristics of the main character (descriptive words), setting, sequence of events in 4th - maybe WT2 or Classical Writing - Aesop in 5th - maybe CW-Homer? [and to make matters more confusing - I had forgotten about SWB's The Complete Writer so now I might be back to 1 in deciding ] Spelling: right now....finishing Spell & Write gr 2 (from Evan-Moore) in 3rd - either Natural Speller (which is for gr 1-8 so hopefully this works for us) or Sequential Spelling Vocabulary: right now....doing A Word A Day Intermediate (2-3 words a wk) (just doing this cause dd7 loves big words) Memorization: would "like" to maybe get the audio cd's from Classical Conversations -what grade is The Complete Writer for? It's sooo confusing - I don't know what I'll wind up with! :D
Melissa B
hey Melissa -could you please show me where you saw the Calvert Spelling cd's? I looked the other day and couldn't find them on their site. ty I hope the link works. http://www.calvertschool.org/accredited-homeschool-curriculum/interactive-learning/cd-courses/calvert-mastery-series-spelling-cds/ If it doesn't work, google Calvert Spelling CD from the google home page rather than trying to search through their website - it is actually easier. :)
angela in ohio
This one is easy! My ideal K-12 plan: K-2 phonics instruction to complete mastery 3-8 R&S English 1-6 copywork, dictation, and narration 2-6 IEW writing 7-? progymnasmata HS use IEW HS materials, work on forms of writing, SAT/ACT writing, etc. 9-10 review grammar with R&S 9-10 K-6 reading list of classic literature 3-6 literature study guides and TTC methods 7-9 Omnibus I-III 10-12 ??? (Omnibus IV-VI or a more traditional sequence) I am aiming complete mastery of spelling and other basic writing conventions by 6th grade and the ability to turn out a report like it is nothing at all by 8th grade.
