Pata
I need your help to identify this tree and it's fruit. I think it's a cherry tree, but seeing that I have never seen one in real life and don't want to kill myself trying, I thought I'd ask for help. The picture is posted on my blog here. Thank you! genie
Looks like cherries, but it could also be crabapples. We have those in our back yard.
Tarheel Heather
Looks like cherries, but it could also be crabapples. We have those in our back yard. I'd say cherries too.
Pster
Could this be it? http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/food/28676_rainier23.shtml and more than you ever wanted to know about VA cherries..... (lol) http://www.ext.vt.edu/pubs/treefruit/422-018/422-018.html#L4 here's a better picture of Ranier cherries (which maybe they aren't even that type but they looked to be that red/yellow color) http://www.harryanddavid.com/gifts/store/item______82C__?&ref=froogle hth!! Old Dominion Heather
That's a cherry tree. Probably more appropriate for pies and cobbler than eating off the tree.
Janie
After pitting, bagging, and freezing them, we have enough for 20 pies. Yummie. The cherries in the pic that you posted are not quite ready but will be in a couple of days. Btw, I'm in Virginia too...south-central area. Mom2legomaniacs
Yes, they look like sour cherries to me. LOVE them for pies and cobblers. Are they soft with a pit in the middle? Yum. Cherries are the best.
Heather in the Kootenays
Looks like cherries - maybe pie cherries but maybe one of the older eating varieties that aren't really red. Some cherries keep that yellow cast even when they're fully ripe.
Pata
Thank you guys! This is what I thought, but you never know. I just might try to learn how to make cherry pie from real cherries instead of Mrs. Smith's! Janie, we are in SW VA, too bad because I don't know any WTM'ers here. Pam "SFSOM" in TN
Thank you guys! This is what I thought, but you never know. I just might try to learn how to make cherry pie from real cherries instead of Mrs. Smith's! Janie, we are in SW VA, too bad because I don't know any WTM'ers here. I'm in the Tricities on the TN side, and Brigitte is packing up this week to move up your way.
Janie
Paige, I'm in Ferrum (40 miles south of Roanoke). What are you close to? You really should try a fresh cherry pie. It's the easiest thing in the world after you pit the cherries! You can find cherry pitters in the hardware store. And so worth the effort! Combine 3 cups pitted fresh ripe tart red cherries, 1 to 1 1/2 cups sugar, 1/4 cup all-purpose flour, and dash salt. Turn into pie shell and bake at 400 for 50-55 minutes. YumYum. Pata
Just to let you all know, we tried the cherries and they were delicious! Thanks for your help! Janie, I live in Blacksburg, I have no idea where Ferrum is in relation to that and I used to live in Roanoke! Thanks for the recipie! Janie
Ah, so you must have met our good WTM friend Cat in Black! If not, you two need to get acquainted. She lives in Bburg too. Ferrum is east of Rocky Mount; you've heard of Ferrum College?
Pata
I have not meant cat in black, didn't even know she was here in bburg! I have heard of Rocky Mount and should have made the Ferrum College connection. :)
