Recommended Posts

I've been gifted a big box of workbooks, please help me sift through and decide what to keep or pass along. My son is 5 1/2 so would be looking to keep things good for him currently or in the future. Thanks!

How to teach your child to read in 100 easy lessons.

Eagle's Wings Considering God's Creation, workbook and TM

Draw, Write, Now... on the Farm

Hearts and Hands

Big book of God's Amazing Creation

Abeka K4, looks to be an almost complete program, plus those huge flashcards in a box.

Abeka Arithmetic 1 (partially used wb and tm)

Studying Gods Word book A

Workbooks:

Total Reading, preschool, School Speciality Publishing

DK Math made easy, 1st grade

K math, School Speciality Publishing

30 minute a day (K and 1st)

Smart to the max learning activities, K

Numbers ans counting Pre-1st School Speciality Publishing

Big Phonics workbook, School Zone Pub.

Specturm math K

Prekindergarten Fundamentals, Rainbow Bridge Pub.

Instant math centers K-1, Creative Teaching Press

Addition, Twin Sisters Productions

Kindergarten, School Zone interactive workbook only

plus....lots and lots of little workbooks

And.... if there are some I should be using now, what could I add to them to make a balanced curriculum.

:)Thanks!!!!

The stuff in blue you could keep and use if they appeal to you.

The stuff in red...send it away.

The stuff in purple I'm not famliar with.

The stuff in green...save for a couple of years, until your ds is 8ish.

I received a similar gift last year. I decided to use PaperbackSwap to get rid of anything that I didn't want. Then I was able to essentially trade what I didn't need for other books that would be more useful. (I like using literature-based curricula, so that is what I got instead.)

For me personallly, I don't care much for workbooks at the age of your child, and it looks like most of the books that you have are for that age group. I would say that unless you have a child that adores workbooks, get rid of them and trade them for something better.

Don't worry. :) K should really just be a gentle introduction to sit down work and the routine of school work.

Pick up some cuisenaire rods and Miquon for some math play.

Read a lot of legends, folklore and myths.

Pick up some K-gr.1 maze and dot-to-dot books.

Take a lot of nature walks and play around in the kitchen with baking and exciting chemicals (baking soda and any acid :))

Pull out the workbooks every once in awhile and see what appeals to your son. Let him browse them to see what he'd like to try. But look at K as exploration not just for him but for you as well.

My plan for K: FIAR and SWR. FIAR includes Social Studies, Language Arts, Art, Math and Science, and SWR includes phonics, spelling, reading and handwriting. I might supplement science with BFSU and math with some fun games. That is it. With my 1st, I planned way too much. My 3yo already is really good in math, so I don't see the point in doing a K program where they mostly learn how to count and add single-digit numbers. He will learn those things just fine in 1st.

These are the ones I would keep:

How to teach your child to read in 100 easy lessons(I would give this a try at least before passing it on.)

Eagle's Wings Considering God's Creation, workbook and TM(I actually had and sold this because it wasn't our thing. I would hold onto it though because you may like it.)

Draw, Write, Now... on the Farm(we love DWN)

Big book of God's Amazing Creation(not sure what this is but it sounds good)

:iagree:I would at least keep these for now! I tried 100 Easy Lessons but switched to OPGTR, but it might work for you. We have fun with the Draw, Write, Now books.

As far as a K plan, my signature shows what we will be using.
