There have been several posts lately about resources for kids interested in engineering. My own ds12 is one of those kids and I've been putting together an introduction to engineering course for him for next year. I've been really excited to find a ton of resources that I'd like to share.

We're going with these:

Robotics Curriculum http://robomatter.com/Shop-By-Product-Type/Curriculum/Middle-School/NXT/Robotics-Engineering-Vol.-1-Introduction-To-Mobile-Robotics-Home-School-Edition'>http://robomatter.com/Shop-By-Product-Type/Curriculum/Middle-School/NXT/Robotics-Engineering-Vol.-1-Introduction-To-Mobile-Robotics-Home-School-Edition'>http://robomatter.com/Shop-By-Product-Type/Curriculum/Middle-School/NXT/Robotics-Engineering-Vol.-1-Introduction-To-Mobile-Robotics-Home-School-Edition'>http://robomatter.com/Shop-By-Product-Type/Curriculum/Middle-School/NXT/Robotics-Engineering-Vol.-1-Introduction-To-Mobile-Robotics-Home-School-Edition

Types of Engineering http://www.amazon.com/Janice-VanCleaves-Engineering-Every-Kid/dp/0471471828/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1303482010&sr=8-1

Engineering Curriculum http://educate.intel.com/en/DesignDiscovery/Curriculum/ and http://www.iteea.org/EbD/HE/he.htm

I found this book the other day. It is written for kids but I wanted to read it! It is called The Ultimate Building Book.

I've read a bunch of reviews and it looks like a great book-I ordered it for $9 used.

I also ordered this book:

http://www.amazon.com/Art-Construction-Principles-Beginning-Architects/dp/1556520808/ref=pd_ybh_3?pf_rd_p=280800601&pf_rd_s=center-2&pf_rd_t=1501&pf_rd_i=ybh&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_r=0PSXRYS8XSFHB02124E6

I also found this site:

YES! and 4-H is coming out w/ a fairly inexpensive hands-on, age-appropriate set of materials too.... just finished their pre-press sale. Lots of opportunities via 4-H too. :D

Where do you find these?

ETA Okay, I just looked at 4H's website.

2nd edit: You know, I had no idea 4H sold this sort of thing. Thank you so much for your post! I tried to find a group for my kids and haven't yet found an appropriate group, so it's nice to have some idea of other possibilities.

you can do ANYTHING in 4-H !! there's some neat "make your own project" worksheets available too. If you can't find a club in your area, you can always start one... it's not as much paperwork as it would seem, and opens LOTS of doors for us.

Well, I talked to someone whose group was mostly composed of horse-crazy teenagers, but I'll keep looking!

  • 1 year later...

The Boy Scout's Engineering merit badge book would be a great help, too. They are specifically aimed at grades 6-12. It would have extra information and great activity ideas. Anyone can buy them from that site; no membership required. Most libraries carry the whole line, too. (They're a good 90 pages each, in spite of them being called pamphlets.)
