Tammyla
THe ugly reddish brown ones with a wood handle are made to work. The pretty ones never seem to.
Catwoman
I bought one at Walmart or Home Depot for about $10. It might have even been cheaper than that. It's plastic and the actual plunger part is an accordion-shaped thingie. It's bright orange. Sorry to get all technical on you. ;) I didn't do any research or anything; I just needed one and that was what they had. It works fine. wapiti
We have the only one sold at the closest grocery store. It works very well. FWIW, it has a black bottom (not that color matters, but it's not one of those regular red ones) that is more than just "cup" shaped - there's an indented(?) area on the bottom. Mrs Mungo
I called my plumber uncle when I had this question. A cup plunger is for bathtubs and sinks, a flange plunger is for toilets.

Oooh... technical terms! I never even thought twice when I purchased a plunger. I bought the cool one that sits in a container so you don't have to see that yucky thing. :tongue_smilie:

Mine looks like the flange one, except it has the accordion shaped thingie above the flange, and it compresses when you "plunge." And mine is orange. And plastic. So really, other than the flange at the bottom, there is no resemblance whatsoever. :tongue_smilie: I am truly terrible at explaining this sort of thing. I have no clue, and it shows. That's all I know. How's that for technical? The accordion thing makes sense that it might force more water down.

The flange plunger is the one we have, and yes we use it for toilets :glare: (don't you just love words like flange )

I'm pretty sure we have that black one, too, but it's lost somewhere in the abyss that is our garage, so that's why I bought the orange one. Catwoman
My thought is that if you need it now, the best plunger is the first one you put your hands on in the hardware store! Well, I don't like to brag, but that's exactly how I chose ours. :tongue_smilie: Cat

kalphs
:bigear: Getting ready to buy a new one. I have amazon prime so I might just order it there. Dh purchased one from Menards that has a flange which fits into the toilet hole. When you push down on the plunger it creates a snug fit for suction.
