Help Me Choose a Book to Read

Recommended Posts

I've just finished six weeks of literary analysis/apologetics with my Lord of the Rings class.

During school we are listening to "The Chronicles of Narnia" audio series.

I am in the market for a new book to read, but want to stay away from the fantasy genre.

Does anyone have any recommendations?

Hm. I can't imagine wanting to stay away from the fantasy genre and a quick glance at my books shows that I am NO help in that regard. :D

My dh, however, really likes:

-Tom Clancy

-Dale Brown

-Harold Coyle

-Clive Cussler

-Stephen Coonts

-Robert Ludlum

My dad would recommend Louis L'Amour. In spite of LL being a complete chauvinist pig, he assures me that his books are historically accurate. If you decide to give him a try, I do NOT recommend "The Walking Drum." I did enjoy most of the books about the Sacketts.

If you want a fun read, try Patrick McManus. His books about being an outdoorsman are hysterically funny.

How about some non-fiction?

  • Born to Run
  • Genghis Khan and the Making of the Modern World
  • Packing for Mars
  • Waiting for Snow in Havana
  • Into Thin Air

A good (non-fantasy) story?

  • Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress
  • The White Tiger
  • C
  • The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie
  • The Remains of the Day
  • Bel Canto
  • Middlesex
  • The Sparrow
