Guest KaciMI
I'm little confused about the sequences of Saxon. Which math should I choose next? I've been reading about skipping Algebra 1/2 but then read about skipping 87. Should we choose 76 next and then move on to 87? Son averages about an 89% in 65. hscherger
You do 7/6. If he gets and 80% or better on all tests in 7/6 then you can move to Pre-Algebra. If you think he needs more practice at the end of 7/6 then do 8/7 before moving into Pre-Algebra. :001_smile:
Hedgehog
:iagree: That's a good average percentage. If he keeps that up, he'll be fine to do 7/6, then Algebra 1/2 (half). If he struggles, then it's recommended you do 8/7 after 7/6, and then go on to Algebra 1.
HollyDay
FYI, we found the move from Sax 65 to 76 quite challenging. The material seems to move faster and the difficulty is greater.
Guest KaciMI
thanks for the information. K
Ellie
:iagree: That's a good average percentage. If he keeps that up, he'll be fine to do 7/6, then Algebra 1/2 (half). However, with the current edition, it's Math 76, Math 87, Alg. 1, if the student is getting at least 80% on Math 76 tests; if he's struggling, the sequence is Math 76, Alg. ½, then Alg. 1. Tammyla
:iagree: (The latest editions for 7/6 & 8/7 are paperback not hardback texts.) THis was true in earlier editions. However, with the current edition, it's Math 76, Math 87, Alg. 1, if the student is getting at least 80% on Math 76 tests; if he's struggling, the sequence is Math 76, Alg. ½, then Alg. 1. Chris in VA
So the revised 8/7 is "harder" than Alg 1/2 revised? :bigear:
Hedgehog
From the Saxon Homeschool website: "What do you recommend for students after they have completed Math 7/6? The recommended path after finishing Math 7/6 is to take Math 8/7. If your child finishes Math 8/7 with at least 80% mastery, skip ahead to Algebra 1. In previous editions, many people skipped Math 8/7 because they found it to be a weaker text than Algebra ½. In the newer third edition, pre-algebra has been added to Math 8/7, making it a much stronger program." So it depends which edition you have! Ellie
So the revised 8/7 is "harder" than Alg 1/2 revised? :bigear: I don't think it's *harder.* It's *different.* Alg.½ was published before Math 87. Originally, IIFC, Math 87 reinforced more of the basic arithmetic functions that are necessary for success in algebra, which is what some children needed before going into algebra, whereas Alg. ½ did lots of work with fractions and whatnot (much of algebra is just complex fractions, KWIM?). Personally, I preferred Math 87 over Alg. ½. :-) But no, Math 87 is not harder. It's different.
JumpedIntoTheDeepEndFirst
So the revised 8/7 is "harder" than Alg 1/2 revised? :bigear: I wondered about this but after DH and I reviewed both the 8/7 and Alg 1/2 books we came to the conclusion that 8/7 gave a broader range of topics and better foundation. Also-we could keep up another year of facts practice. If 8/7 is successful I think we will move straight into Alg. 1. We also thought that 8/7 provided clearer explanations of the material.
