Fire Safety

Through my library, years ago, I got a free movie from an incurance co. I think it was either State Farm or Allstate. It features Seymore Smoke Detector and teaches kids about fire safety and gives them rhymes to remember like "Don't hide, go outside" Mine still remember it now. They are 9, 11, and 14. I need to dig it out for the 4yo.

ok, dug it out. It was Allstate.

We toured the fire house with ds when he was younger. We moved a few times and always made it a point to drop into the fire house at least once. We discussed fire safety at an age appropriate level, meaning we tried to NOT scare him with the discussion.

We went through fire drills in the house, talked about what his responsibility would be (like get out), what he wasn't supposed to do (like try to find the cat or dog), and where to meet once he was out of the house.

We still go through the routine about once a year, even though there is no requirement in our state.

Ironically I was just thinking of this as we are moving soon. One of the houses we are looking at has a dormer bedroom, which would be ds', and I've been trying to figure out a fire safety plan for that room.

Thanks for the suggestions. The unit from Homeschool Share looks good for this year. I'll have to see if there is a DVD or online version of the Allstate movie. The web games may be too advanced for this year, if so, I'll save them for next year.

Our fire station's open house was last weekend. We looked at some of the equipment and watched the med-evac helicopter take off.

We usually tour a firehouse once a year.

We make a fire escape plan for our home, and then my daughter writes it out and draws a diagram. We include that in our portfolio.

We also sometimes do "fire safety worksheets." Here are two places you can find plenty of those:

http://homeschooling.about.com/od/holidays/ss/fireprint.htm

http://home.comcast.net/~askpauline/hs/homeschoolfire.html

And we list fire safety websites in our "Summary" when I sum up what we did for each required subject to include with my portfolio. Examples:

Not sure of the ages of your dc but when you go to the fire station, ask if one of the firefighters can get in their gear. This helps young children to see what the firefighters look like if they have to enter a burning building to save someone. Young children are sometimes afraid when they see the big mask, gloves, etc. and that can be dangerous. The fire department also may have free materials (coloring books, checklists and so on) that you could use.
