Misty
Our co-op is visiting a nursing home to do some entertaining/talent showcase stuff in a couple of weeks. My almost 13yr old daughter would like to sing a song, but we are stuck on what to sing. She wants to sing Miranda Lambert's The House That Built Me, but I think she should sing something that they will recognize.. Any ideas? Mejane
Having worked extensively with the elderly, I agree with you. They would most enjoy something from their time that is cheery. I'd try to avoid sad or overly sentimental songs as some people get very emotional.
Onceuponatime
If you don't object, I know that many nursing home residents recognize and love old-style gospel hymns. I remember one time when an elderly man joined in and belted out "When the Roll is Called up Yonder." Another option is some kind of traditional folk song. Cinder
It's been awhile since we were in a group that did this but I recall singing "Bicycle Built for Two." Can't remember the others but they were definitely from that same era. I think we sang a traditional hymn also. Cinder
Nakia
Are you opposed to having her sing a hymn? If not, I think that would be nice. I agree with you about her singing something they would recognize.
sparrow
The song that seems to get the oldsters up from their chairs at the outdoor concerts in our small town is "Won't You Come Home Bill Bailey?".:D
Laurie4b
I agree with you and others that she should sing something from the residents' younger days. I would suggest either asking someone you know who is about their age what to sing or call the nursing home director and ask what specific songs the residents like. You could also try googling "popular hits from the 30's" (or 40's) and see if there are songs your dd likes.
Evergreen State Sue
My daughter and a friend sang "Open Up Your Heart and Let the Sunshine In" to a group of seniors at our church. I think you can listen to a version on YouTube. Bamm and Bamm and Pebbles did a rendition on the Flintstones. It is very cheery telling you to focus on the positive when life gets you down. I think that's what helps people "survive" life in a nursing home. Edited August 22, 2010 by Evergreen State Sue
littlebug42
Our show choir in college went to many nursing homes and they always loved the medley that we did from My Fair Lady and Camelot. They liked the older show tunes.
CLHCO
When we've performed for the elderly, if we play "I'll Fly Away", everyone sings along.
OrganicAnn
Patriotic songs are also ones that most people know. Here are some others: You are my Sunshine If I knew you were coming I would've baked a cake. I'll be seeing you in all the old familiar places.
