If you plan to read "The Door in the Wall" (mid ages)

It looks like your daughter is 6? Do you think she understood most of the book, or do you wish you had waited a few years?

 

DD is 7, a history buff, and has had a lot of experience (thanks to Five in a Row) with symbolism and metaphor so yes, she understood the book. Some of the younger kids in our group understood the story line but missed the deeper "story behind the story."

 

This is one of those books that really is worth reading twice - which is my ultimate plan. I agree that most 6 year olds are a bit young, but it depends on whether you are using the book to introduce all things medieval, or whether you want to explore the author's use of metaphor.

 

How's that for responding to your question with answer that spins full circle? Clear as mud?

It was actually very helpful! Nik is also a huge history buff, so I think we'll go ahead and read it and then re-read it in the future. The plans are great! I've been looking them over all evening. Thanks again!
