  1. Thank you!! This is incredibly helpful. I'm starting to get a better feel for the program. I looked at SWR and WRTR but was intimidated by both of them. I like your idea of using the extended Ayers list as a continuation of the program. LOE sounds like it just might be the way to go for us. Wow!! This is great feedback. I guess that *I* need a refresher course on the rules so that I can do a better job of helping my DS. I've always been a natural speller and never really had a need to dive into the whys of spelling. I will check out both of your recommendations. Thank you!!
  2. Thanks for the info!! I took a look at LOE. I like that it's all laid out which would make it easy for ME to implement! I also like that it can be completed in 8-16 weeks with a child of my son's age. I guess that my biggest concern with LOE is that the word list doesn't look like it would be enough in the end. I'm assuming that we would need a different program after he has mastered the 40 lessons in LOE. Am I correct to make that assumption? Also, if I decide to use LOE would it be a good idea to buy the complete package? I have 2 younger children so I always try to keep them in mind when curriculum shopping. :)
  3. I need some help figuring out what to do with my rising 6th grader regarding spelling. He's not the worst speller in the world (although I feel that way sometimes :glare:) but he's definitely not spelling at his grade level. I'm hoping to use the summer to play catch up with spelling. Here's a few examples of words that he's misspelled.... purfume instead of perfume quale instead of quail cinima instead of cinema seerious instead of serious masive instead of massive Overall, the majority of the words in his compositions are spelled correctly so I'm not panicking yet. But I'd like to work on this over the summer so that he's ready for the compositions that will be coming in middle school. I don't want his ability to spell to hinder him when it comes to writing. Thanks for listening!! I feel more confused this year than I did when I first started homeschooling 3 years ago and I could really use some suggestions. Maybe it's the upcoming transition to middle school. It frightens me! I'd love to hear your program recommendations. :bigear:
  4. :bigear: We plan on using WWS for 6th. I haven't been thrilled with VIE for grammar. It's okay. Plus it was an expensive choice just for grammar. I'm considering both Analytical Grammar and K12. I've read mixed reviews on K12 for grammar but we are using them for Literature so I feel that I should at least consider it as an option.
  5. I haven't posted in awhile but I thought I'd jump in and share our experience. We're finishing up level 3 with a 6 year old and an 11 year old. It has been a perfect fit for us! I've ordered level 4 to use next year. :)
  6. :iagree: Glad you asked! I was also getting worried. I just tried and it worked for me too. I used my email address with the password that I was given for BrainPop. :)
  7. You can also add Chattahoochee Nature Center to the list. They offer a Home School Lunch & Learn once a month (I think!). :)
  8. :bigear: I just started researching all things Charlotte Mason and I'm loving many of the ideas. I'm already thinking about next year....
  9. I was very happy with only using WWE and FLL. Both programs matched my goals for my 1st year. I would recommend taking a look at the Table of Contents for FLL to help you decide. You may find that the next book in the series ALL would be better suited for your 5th grader. Also, definitely use the placement tests for WWE for both students. Every student will be different so it's hard to give a recommendation. My one piece of advice would be to not overload yourself with too many programs from the beginning. Give yourself some time to get adjusted. You'll soon figure out how much you can add to your schedule. :)
  10. :iagree: I highly recommend reading Writing with Ease. I also pulled my oldest DS out of PS after 2nd grade. We used WWE/FLL for 3rd grade. I moved him into IEW's SWI-A while continuing FLL for 4th. I love, love, love IEW's writing products! But keep in mind that teaching writing isn't one of my strengths. I'm a math gal. ;) For 5th, we're using IEW's SICC-A with MCT Town level. I doubt that I will use the writing assignments in Paragraph Town but I'll make that decision as we move thru the program. WWE and IEW have given me a lot of confidence as a new home schooling mom. There's not one right way to do it but the WWE/IEW sequence has worked well in our house. :)
  11. :iagree: We did Science D in 3rd grade. My DS disliked the Water book which is included in the 5 day package. Honestly, I was bored by it so I'll probably just do the 4 day schedule when I come back to Science D with my younger two. I ordered the Science Supplies kit along with the Non-Consumable Kit. Pretty much everything that you need is included. The supplies that don't come with the kit are basic household items that you'll most likely already have on hand. I tried to do a different science this year and it just didn't get done. My DS asked to go back to Sonlight for 5th so that's what we're doing. :)
  12. My middle DS officially starts kindergarten in August. Even though I've been homeschooling my oldest for a couple of years, everyone seems so surprised when I tell them that I'll also be homeschooling his younger brother for K. I sometimes wonder what other people are thinking! :001_huh:
  13. Congrats mommy4ever! :bigear: I've recently made the decision to return to the Catholic Church so I'm taking notes.
  14. I know! The listing in the catalog caught me off guard. :glare: There are days where these are the only things scheduled for history. In fact, I remember there was a week where the only history reading was from one of the Story of USA books. I wish that I could give you a better answer. Perhaps someone with more insight will chime in. We liked them so I'm a little biased. ;) Hope you feel better!!
