Midwest Momma
I cut hair for 3 dss with clippers. I have been disappointed lately that so many hairs are missed. I thought getting new blades would do the trick, but I am still disappointed. Maybe I need to splurge on a new set of clippers. What is your experience, and which clippers should I get (and where)? Thanks for all your input :).
KS_
Well, I can't help much about splurging on clippers - we have only ever bought the ones from Walmart. When I had dogs, and clipped them, they wore out pretty fast, but now that the new one is only used for dh and ds, I haven't had that problem. But I do notice that they miss some hair and dh will have to go back over ds' hair a few times to catch the missed hairs.
Tutor
Well, I can't help much about splurging on clippers - we have only ever bought the ones from Walmart... But I do notice that they miss some hair and dh will have to go back over ds' hair a few times to catch the missed hairs. We also just use the clippers from WalMart. I have found that if I forget to clean and oil the blades after every cut, I don't get as nice of a cut on subsequent uses. I also usually plan on going over dh's and ds's hair with scissors the next day to neaten up the cut. After a good washing and just plain, old life, I can better see how their hair will lay naturally vs the way I combed and sectioned it to cut it. (Ds just gets a buzz, so I normally only have to touch up around his ears because he was giggling when I used the clippers the day before because I was tickling him.) HTH
K-FL
Wahl is the only brand I'll buy anymore. I cut dh & ds's hair & they seem to cut better & less pulling. It's the same brand the hairdressers here use.

KristineIN
Dh used to by the cheaper clippers, my friend is a beautician and said to go to Sally's Beauty Supply, spend about $50.00 and you can get a great pair, oil them, oil them, oil them and they will stay sharp and last, we've been going for about 6 years. He cuts his hair & our two boy's. Kristine
Frontier Mom
I bought my Wahl's from Sally and they have been great. I think they do a much better job than the cheaper ones I had and the fact that the boys have thick hair meant they got dull too fast. Suzanne in ABQ
I have the Wahl Professional Series clippers from Sally Beauty Supply, too. I LOVE THEM! I have gone through several clippers (Conair, Oster, etc). Even new, they would require several passes just to cut most of the hair. They would get worse over time. These Wahls go through hair like butter! One pass. That's it. And, they're so much easier to clean. My last Conairs had this foam stuff under the blades that would collect the hair. There wasn't any practical way to get it out. These are made just like the pair my dad bought in the 1960s (and they still work -- just need sharpening). Anyway, go to Sally, and get the Wahls. They're worth 3 or 4 pairs of the cheapo brands. (In my not so humble opinion) ;) Editing to add: Whatever brand you buy, make sure you get clipper oil, too. You need to oil the blades after every use -- about 3 drops on the blades while the unit is running, then turn off the unit and wipe off excess with a piece of TP, or paper towel, and store with the cover on. The oil will help the blades cut better, and they'll stay sharp longer.
newsong
A 16+ year Wahl user here. I've briefly tried a few other brands, but they didn't cut and/or feel right and had a shorter life span. With 5 heads of hair to keep shaped up, our Wahl gets a workout but holds up well.
Jean in Newcastle
Another vote for Wahl. We had to get replacement blades once.
ELaurie
can anyone recommend a good book or video about how to cut your dc's hair? I have two boys, ages 5 and 8. Thank you!
Jean in Newcastle
My Wahl clipper came with a video in the package. It was very helpful.
