Hearing/feeling your heartbeat in your ear...

Recommended Posts

Ds11 says he hears/feels a pounding in his right ear. It's not painful, just distracting. It's not constant. He described it as boomBOOM, boomBOOM. When I asked him if it was kind of like he was hearing his heartbeat, he said yes.

I've never experienced this, so I can't understand what it feels like. I doubt that it's really a "problem", but it is bothersome to him.

Any comments or commisseration? :bigear:

Thanks,

Chelle

I have that often. For me, it's due to fluid in the ears. If your ds is gearing up for a cold, or recovering from one, or has allergies, this could be the problem.

If it was someone older, I might be concerned about high blood pressure. but with someone as young as your ds, it's most likely fluid.

I have had this since I was a child. I remember my mother taking me to hearing specialist when I was about 7, as it was driving me mad. the specialist basically told me I was hearing my heart, and there is nothing they can do about it. I have learned to not pay attention to it, and hardly notice it now, though it is still there.

Thank you, everyone! These are all interesting replies. I really appreciate you taking time to respond.

I forgot that he did say it felt like water was in his ear. He had swimming lessons earlier this year, but didn't start complaining until weeks after that was over.

I'll mention it to the pediatrician at his check up. We're due to go in before too long.

ETA: Also, he is not a big water drinker and we're working on that. Dehydration is a possibility, too.

Again, thanks!

It's called pulsatile tinnitus. It was the first symptom I had of intracranial hypertension. (I make too much spinal fluid which, now that I think about it, makes sense. I tend to keep things even when I don't need them. Apparently I do the same with spinal fluid.)

He is not exactly high risk for Intracranial Hypertension and it isn't fatal, anyway.
