Julie in CA
...and add a chopped up onion, water, maybe some finely chopped celery, will I end up with something yummy? What else should I add? :bigear:
littlebug42
Sounds yummy as is. We ate pinto beans all the time when I was a kid and my mom just did them with beans and the ham (and more often without the meat bone or meat at all). We always ate them with fried potatoes and corn bread.
dansamy
Salt and pepper. Don't add salt until the beans are nearly done though.
Spy Car
A head of garlic. Not a clove, all the cloves! Tomatoes. Bill (vampire killer :D)
mollies73
We put rice in it.
Daisy
As is, in my house. We'd do the onion, pintos, water, and ham bone. We'd throw it in the bowl and add in some fresh pico de gallo and a handful of cilantro and be good to go.
dansamy
Bill is right. Definitely some garlic. (Maybe not quite so much unless you intend to ward off everyone, human and vampire alike!)

What else should I add? :bigear: Good start, then I'd add: dried mustard, a dab of brown sugar, some worcestershire sauce and some bacon. We like ours with a slightly sweet and savory taste. Mrs Mungo
I add garlic with the onions and stuff. At the end I add tomatoes, hot sauce (I use Texas Pete or Lousiana Hot Sauce) and chili powder.
TheCoffeeChick
To a 2 lb bag of beans I add: Ham hocks, 2t chili powder, 1/8t cayenne pepper, 1t oregano, 3-4 cloves garlic, & black pepper. Ham hocks are pretty salty, so I don't add salt till they are done and I can taste test them at the same time. We serve ours on top of cornbread and dh puts sliced jalopenos (that I canned last summer) on top of that. VERY YUMMY -- even the kids gobble it up. Jen in PA
I would add some cumin. And an invitation for all of us to stop by for lunch.:D
Julie in CA
In the end I was too tired to do anything more. I used dried pinto beans, my leftover ham bone, a chopped up onion, and bay leaves. Put them in the crockpot on low overnight. :drool5: They are really *really* good. I will save the other ideas for another time--they all sound good! Thanks, Julie
