crunchycons
I picked up A Child's History of the World by V.M. Hillyer at our local hs used book sale, it was published by Sonlight so I figured it was decent and have wanted to start it with my kids. I found the first couple chapters disturbing with evolution and big bang so we obviously skipped that and used the bible. I was going to start with the 3400 BC Menes. Does anyone have experience using this book? Any thoughts or advice?
Tree House Academy
Don't let the first few chapters turn you off to it. We did CHOW last year and both my son and I really enjoyed it. Despite the first couple of chapters, Hilyer is a believes in God and it is obvious from the rest of the writing in the book.
Blueridge
We love the book. It's on my all-time favorite read alouds list. We are currently going through it a 3rd time, now with my youngers.
jewel7123
It's used in several curriculums, including Sonlight and Heart of Dakota, so you snagged yourself a good one! =)
Mom2GirlsTX
It is also used in Calverts 4th grade program. I love the book, so did my kids. I must say the first few chapters were not the best, but it improves and is a great book.
tricia
We are doing it right now and love it. However, I too did not like the first few chapters so we started on chapter 4 and all is well.
Georgia
:iagree:We used it, too. Liked it a lot, and it's easy to supplement with library books like Eyewitness and myths.
Guest RecumbentHeart
Before purchasing I had read in reviews that it was wonderful from about the 5th chapter onwards. We haven't started using it yet but I'm reading it to organize our plan and I'm thinking I'll use the Bible up through the tower of Babel and carry over from there. abbeyej
It's a favorite around here too! Feel free to skip the pre-history chapters and jump in with the Egyptians, if you like.
butterfly113
We are currently using it in Heart of Dakota Preparing Hearts. Love it! The first couple of chapters are skipped, yet the rest has been great!
2cents
We worked through CHOW a few years ago and the kids really enjoyed it. In addition to the text, we used the workbook and cd that Calvert sells. The cd has interesting animations/games/quizzes to go along with each chapter and it is very well done. crunchycons
thanks so much for the great replies. I was about to donate the book and now I look forward to using it. So, do you read a few chapters, say on ancient Egypt, then study more indepth on that particular subject then move on to the next and so forth or do you sit and read it like a storybook? I was planning on doing the WTM history 4 year cycle. thanks!
Chloe
We really enjoyed CHOW. We used a schedule found at Donna Young's website to supplement. http://donnayoung.org/history/chotw-p.htm http://donnayoung.org/history/chotw-cw.htm
