Rhesa
I don't have my AG with me, and I need some suggestions for Alexander the Great. I remember an Usborne book that seemed to be an early elementary level, but I can't find it through our library system (or on Amazon). Anyone have handy any books they enjoyed for Alexander? My kids are K & 1st, so it needs to be pretty brief. Thanks!
Karen in CO
Baldwin's fifty famous stories has at least two stories on Alexander that I remember the kids enjoyed. Check the online versions if you don't have the book.
Carol in Cal.
It is pitched more for upper grammar/lower logic, but would be a great readaloud if it were spread out over several days. I don't know of an early grammar text that is any better than the version that is part of SOTW1.

Stacia
"Alexander the Great" from the "Kids Who Ruled" series by McGraw Hill Publishing. I originally bought this book (plus the 2 others in the series) from bookclosouts. Fun book; would be good for the age of your children, I think. http://www.amazon.com/Alexander-Great-Jackie-Gaff/dp/1577685539/ref=sr_11_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1205199067&sr=11-1 I think this is the Usborne one you mentioned (?): http://www.amazon.com/Alexander-Great-Famous-Lives-Books/dp/0794508693/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1205199386&sr=1-1 We have other biographies from this series & have enjoyed them. ArwenA
I second the Kids Who Rule book and the Usbornne Famous Lives Book we also really like "You Wouldn't Want to be in Alexander the Great's Army!".
Jean in Newcastle
“Alexander the Great†by John Gunther is a great old (out-of-print) book that I found at my library. I liked it so much that I've bought a copy through Alibris. What I liked about it is that it talks frankly about his character.
Rebecca in VA
and you can buy it from Amazon. John Gunther's Alexander the Great is a former Landmark book that is now republished by Sterling Point Press. Sterling Point has republished a number of the old Landmark books. 8filltheheart
It is one of our favorites, too. I was going to suggest it, but after re-reading the OP and seeing it was for k and 1st, I decided against it. I would personally suggest she saves it for the next go round. Stacia
"You Wouldn't Want to be in Alexander the Great's Army!". Oh, yes, we love that whole series of books -- kind of gross, but fun & informative too, lol. And, that makes me think of the Good Times Travel Agency books by Linda Bailey. They're fantastic & both of my kids have loved the entire series; I can't even begin to count how many times we've read those books over the past few years. There's not one specifically on Alexander the Great, but there is one about Ancient Greece.
Mrs. Readsalot
Several others have mentioned this and it is a great book. One of our favorite Landmark books.
Rhesa
I think this is the Usborne one you mentioned (?): http://www.amazon.com/Alexander-Great-Famous-Lives-Books/dp/0794508693/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1205199386&sr=1-1 We have other biographies from this series & have enjoyed them. That was the exact book! I looked on amazon for 30 minutes and couldn't find it... I've got great researching skills...
