  1. Prufrock is my go-to place, but also check out Bright Ideas for the Gifted and Talented logic bundles. They have one for each grade level: K-3, 3-6, and 6-8. I am linking you to the 3-6 one which sounds like it would be perfect for you. I have this and it is wonderful! https://id18510.securedata.net/brightideascatalog.com/merchantmanager/product_info.php?cPath=0_231&products_id=2143
  2. Sounds like my dd when she was that age. I would be reading to her and she would be rolling all over the floor, playing with her toys, you name it; but she was listening to every word I was reading. She could repeat word for word what I had just read and soar through the comprehension questions afterward. I had to work her up to sitting and working with me, it was a challenge and I had to use a variety of instructional methods to keep her motivated. Good luck to you, it is well worth it but I know you are exhausted.
  3. There are several areas of giftedness, like the poster said above-google Howard Gardner's areas of multiple intelligences. It is interesting to read all about them I love his definition of the areas and find it extremely relevant to many. Also, our state recognizes several areas of giftedness: creative, general intellectual, fine/performing arts, leadership, specific academic: math, language arts, science, and social studies.
  4. We took my dd and now it is ds's turn, he is proud of this accomplishment and to do something his sister did so we are definitely going.
  5. Our bearded dragon is now 2 years old. His breeder has been in the business for over 20 years and she suggested feeding him a diet of mixed greens, hard-boiled egg and sweet potato. Each week, we make a mix for him. He has never had crickets before, we got him around 6 weeks old. I am not sure if he had any before that. Anyway, it makes life a lot easier for us and my son is responsible for making his "mix" each week. I microwave the sweet potato and make the eggs. We buy greens each week and put the three in a food processor. So far, so good! :001_smile: Enjoy your dragon!!
  6. Dd will understand, I had a similar situation and don't regret pulling my dd away from this family for a minute! It is about protecting your child!
  7. We order all of our pet memorials from perfectmemorials.com
  8. When I enrolled my children in ps after five years of homeschooling, they were ahead. I had the option to enroll both in a grade higher, but opted to keep them with kids their ages for maturity reasons. I feel homeschooling gave them the absolute best start and would still be doing it today if I didn't have to return to the workplace.
  9. I hear you loud and clear. I homeschooled for educational reasons only and don't regret a minute of it. However, we often felt isolated by the church hs groups who wouldn't even allow us to go on a field trip with them! I feel for you as this is the one aspect I don't miss about homeschooling. Feel free to message me for support.
  10. A great service that provides feedback on writing for a reasonable price is tailorededucation.com-it was a good price too!
  11. Our biggest transition was socially. Both of my dc are shy and the loudness, kids, activity going on at school freaked them out. Eventually they got used to it. Academically, they were bored at first, they actually said we worked harder at home! Now, it is 3 years later and they still ask to homeschool from time to time, but economically it isn't feasible.
  12. Go for it! Education is so empowering. In my state we have to get two master's degrees for teaching or our national boards. I am finished with my first masters and think because of cost I will go the national boards route. However, if money wasn't an issue-I'd do a second masters in a heartbeat!
  13. We have a cash contract on our house, no contingencies. The buyer asked for two extentions because the cd's they were going to use for the house couldn't be cashed in because the bank supposedly went under so they had to get a loan. Nothing new was added to the extentions all parties signed, they applied and were approved for a loan but didn't like the interest rate and thought the closing costs were too high so now want to back out of the contract. Our realtor told us to contact a lawyer to force them to buy the house. We talked to a lawyer and he said we have a case for breach of contract and the fastest way to do this would be to auction off the house and say it went for 100,000-he would be stuck paying the remaining 40,000 because the contract was for 140,000. We are afraid even with a judgement against him that he won't pay us the 40,000 and we will be out legal fees. Should we just let this one go or pursue legal action?
  14. for a 50 lb bag of their store dog food, you only pay 12.95, that is a deal. Our three dogs like it too!
  15. A little background... I homeschooled dd from preschool to 3rd grade, put her in ps for 4th-6th (now) and I also reinstated my license and have been employed as a full-time ps teacher for the past two years. Due to the poor economy, it turns out that I need my job, dh is in an unstable profession (manufacturing). Her homeschooled start put her at the head of her class, things were going great until now. She hates school, says it is boring in spite of being in the g/t program and has a best friend that is always threatening suicide and is overall unstable. That is a lot to bear for a 12 year old and we want to help her, but we can't quit our jobs. Suggestions? I know she can't be home during the day and be homeschooled with both of us working. I don't know what to do to help her. There is a virtual high school in the area, she could possibly qualify for it in 8th grade thus starting hs early, however one of us would still need to be home with her. Thanks!
  16. I read this thread a couple of times earlier and am trying to find the right words to respond. It is hitting our family hard right now, dh just was told his company is moving to Asia last week. We are devastated and not sure where to go from here..... I'm all gloom and doom, so you most likely don't want to hear my thoughts.
  17. I am in the process of becoming a member of DAR and also studying our family tree. I already belong to ancestry.com are there any others that are just as good or better? Thank you!
  18. I found a DO that is 47 miles from us (the closest one). How many times a week would we have to drive there? I'd be willing to do once a week, but more than that would be tough. I am willing to try anything but surgery. We aren't concerned with cosmetic appearance right now, just getting his brain trained correctly so he isn't just seeing out of one eye. I ordered some patches for him to start using. What do some of you think of patching?
  19. My son's doctor wants to do surgery for his lazy eye. Is this a safe and successful option or should I push for something else?
  20. 20 is reasonable, this 40 and 50 is ridiculous. She is even saying that some kids in her class are reading Junie B. Jones and easy books like that just to get the points. This is the higher reading group and a lot of the kids doing this are gifted. I'd love to complain, but we are just going to do our best to get them.
  21. I received a letter in the mail that dd qualified to participate in the 4th/5th grade talent search. She attends ps and I guess her IQ test qualified her (she in g/t there). Do any of you have experience with this? What do you think of the program? I don't know anything about it. Thank you!
  22. Now that we are all in public school (me included as a teacher now), I think I was nicer before because I didn't have all the stress of working full-time and we had much more time together to bond as mother and children. Now we all have our separate issues going on. I think if I was home and not working, it would be different whether they were in school or homeschooling. I am just so tired at night and on the weekends now. I look forward to our breaks and summer vacation!
  23. I am a little freaked out. I'm home alone with the kids right now and a strange man rang the doorbell at 11:00 p.m. We were all asleep, but he rang it twice so I looked through the glass on the door and he asked to use the phone. I told him no and then he was trying to tell me to call someone, but I couldn't hear him very well because my dogs were barking. He grew frustrated trying to tell me and said he was going next door. I called dh and he said to call the police to have them check it out (we live near a highway). I did and they sent someone out. The police just called me back and said that the man who had come to the door had a wreck down the road. Now I feel bad!!! Should I? Would you of done the same thing?
  24. I agree with the others. Cut his problems in half, give him 6 to work on instead of 12. Then sit with him through each step. Eventually, he will be able to successfully do these on his own.
  25. There is a bunch of information at tmz.com and drudgereport.com on his death. So sad.
