  1. I read the second teacher's comments and my first thought was, 'does this person need help on how to manage the class?' I mean no offense, but maybe this could be a learning opportunity for her. The kids were going in and out to the restroom for 20 minutes; would this be an opportunity to talk to her about maybe a group trip to the restroom. She said they came up one at a time; could she have adapted this to several students coming up at once and let them enjoy each others company and by extension cut down on the kids boredom.
  2. I have very thin, stick straight hair and short is best for me. I have the type of hair that the longer it gets the thinner it becomes so by the time it is waist length I only have a wisp of hair from breakage. My hair does not hold a curl..[i have some Apache blood in me].....so straight is in for me all the time, regardless of the style at the time...LOL On the 'plus' side, it does grow fast. I average 3/4 to 1 inch growth a month.
  3. I really love my library. I can access their website from home and pick out books and they will gather them for me. It is great. The library is not huge, as we live in a small town. BUT they are breaking ground on a new improved, larger library here in a few weeks. I AM THRILLED!!!:D
  4. I have never had one but have heard that they are not that pleasant to endure. Good luck!!!
  5. This board has a bump feature...every new post bumps it to the top.
  6. I came out in '98 a few years after you, but I was a late bloomer; I dabbled in business before nursing. I was pondering whether intermediate Algebra is Algebra 2. I am thinking it is algebra 1. My daughter has had Algebra 1 and 2 and she tests for college algebra. DD has mentioned that she would like to do nursing. So technically, she has all the math that she needs right now. On a side note, I am glad to see so many other fellow Nurses. Are any of you still practicing? Personally, I do disease management. So essentially I teach.
  7. You have received some great info. I would second the idea of flexibility and sense of humor. I would also encourage you to consider allowing your ds or dd some input into the selection of the materials. I do that with my twins and it cut out any conflict.
  8. I feel that this bill is not so much about discriminating against those who are heavy, but instead it gives a wake up call that says "let's take a look at the national obesity rate." I live outside of San Antonio Tx and a few years ago this city was ranked the number one heaviest in the nation. I think it is down to number 3 now. Obesity in and of by itself can lead to a person being sick and unable to work. They can end up on disability long term or for life. Shocking I know but it can and does happen. I am a nurse and I am amazed at the damage excess weight can do to the body: increased blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease, stroke, multiple types of cancer as well as knee or back pain that later leads to surgery. The impact on the person and by extension society as a whole is staggering. :( I don't really need to look very far for an example. My spouse is about 100-125 lbs over weight. We used to go out golfing, go on walks or go to the movies together. But now with the excess weight he has no energy and we go no where together. He gets winded walking across the room! He is now on medication for high blood pressure and high cholesterol. He was laid off of his job. They of course did not say it was related to his weight, but really, they were fearful that he would have a heart attack or some other event in their shop. A scary proposition. He has sleep apnea and snores like crazy because the excess weight presses on his vocal cords. In fact, he snores so loudly that he has to sleep in another room so I can get some sleep. Sleep apnea is very hard on the body, holding ones breath over and over again damages the heart. His knees hurt him daily. He has had shots in his knees. The doc told him that the next time he sees him for pain they will schedule surgery. On the plus side, the last visit to the md was a wake up call for him. When the doctor started talking surgery, he came to me and asked what could be done, and by divine intervention that very day I had read that Lap Banding was approved for our insurance carrier. So we will be pursueing this avenue for him. So while I don't agree with discrimmination of a group of people, I would love to see some people be able to be offered hope and help if they need it.
  9. We will be reading 10 books and plays this year. We will generally spend around 2-4 weeks per book. Depending on the author or the focus of the book I will add in some short stories and poetry. We will also spend a week or two just studying poetry. As to how much reading per day I generally assign that would be around 10-30 pages depending on what we I have assigned them to do with the reading. Like right now we are reading Huck Finn. For most books we have journal activities, some are only over certain portions of the book but others span the whole book. For Huck the activity spans the whole book. They need to find a character trait of Huck in each chapter, note that trait, find a quote that supports it and put it into context for me. Yesterday I assigned them chapters 7-8, which is only about 15 pages. But they will need to do the journal activity above and tease out the moral issues that Huck is facing in these 2 chapters and write me a 1 page paper on that topic. The paper is due today. So really it depends.
  10. I have a BS in Nursing and for math in college we needed Intermediate Algebra and that was needed to satisfy the college basic requirements. For my school, the only additional math needed was a Statistics class. Any additional Math was taught/reinforced during Clinical labs and Pharmacology.
  11. Well I guess I will jump in. Language Arts- LL, with supplements. 1 hr of class time daily and 30-45 minutes of homework Math- Saxon Adv Math- 1-2 hrs in class 3 times a week Latin Henle 2- 45 minutes per day World Geography 1 hr 3 times a week class time, then ~30 minutes a day of homework Apologia Physics about 5 hours a week [i thought this would be hard for my daughter and she is just blowing right through this. She is averaging a module every 6 days.] How Great Thou Art - 45 minutes - 1 hr a day. They are really enjoying this. Sociology and Computer class at local college. My daughter justed asked if we can do some personal finance, so we will be adding on a 1/2 credit for that. I anticipate that will add 15-30 minutes a day in class then another 45 minutes homework daily.
  12. We use various things. We used Abeka last year for World Literature. This year we are using Lightning Literature and next year we will use Perrine's Structure, Sound and Sense. The pick of literature to read is based on WTM, English teachers websites and 101 Great Books from the collegeboard.com
  13. Thank you all for your wonderful advice. Yes, It LifeSkills is what I was thinking about. But I am certainly open to checking out Dave Ramsey and Money Matters. I am glad to hear they both have such great reviews. :D
  14. My 15 yo dd has asked for a Money Management type class. She will be 16 yo soon and she shared with me that she feels that she needs to learn better money management and purchasing skills prior to getting her license and then thinking about buying a car. My first thought when she said this to me was how insightful she is being. I was quite impressed. :D That emotion was followed very quickly with Uh, oh she is looking at me to fill that void. She is not looking for an Econ class, they will be taking that at the local CC in a year or so. This would be an elective. I thought I saw something once on this board [well the old board] on Life SKills???? Life Prep??? Does this ring a bell for anyone?
  15. WOW Stacey you taught college English. Maybe we all need to pick your brain a little bit. :D I would love hear your college stories. As to the question at hand, we include Grammar, Literature, Vocab and Writing as one HS credit for English. Just to break that down further, this year: Grammar - Daily Grams, HS version. For those who have used Daily Grams we know that each day the student is given a gram, that has 5-7 grammar tasks such as: fixing capitals, sentence combining, sentence correction etc. In addition to this, on each gram, I added 2 additional sentence completions, analogies or additional practice questions courtesy of collegeboard.com, The Official SAT Study Guide or the 10 Real SATs book. Last year we did Abeka Grammar, so this is a 'keep the skills alive' year, so to speak. Literature - Lightning Literature, plus additional reads and study quides. For example the twins did not want to read Moby Dick, so I took that out and replaced it with 'The Crucible' and 'The Great Gatsby.' We used study guides from Glencoe, Sparksnotes and various English teachers websites. I must say if you have not searched the internet for high school English Teachers or college professor's websites, consider doing so. They are a wealth of information. I have found several to where the instructor has study guides, grammar, vocab and quizzes available. Try this one: http://www.argo217.k12.il.us/departs/english/blettiere/index.htm Vocab - VFCR book E. We do a section a week, so I needed to fill the other half of the year. For this we are using AP Vocab from layingthefoundation.org. From this site we are using the vocab from the books we were reading, such as 'Huck Finn' and 'The Crucible,' but then I also used the SAT vocab. Writing - I generally assign a paper to be due once a week or at least once every 2 weeks. They also have a journal. This we use for in class in promtu writings or prompts. HTH
