  1. Last year my twins took: Intro to Sociology and a Computer class. This year they will take: US History 1 and 2 Calculus 1 and 2
  2. We have used Biology, Chemistry, Physics and this year we will use Advanced Physics. The twins have loved them all. In fact when I asked them what they would like to do for Science this year they asked to do Apologia Advanced Physics.
  3. We are also in Texas and the twins qualify for 2 free classes per semester. They will be taking them. In my area they are only allowed to get 27 cr hrs for free through the CC system. My understanding is that once they are above 30 hours they would be considered Sophomores and not available for Freshman sclorarships. But then I guess it depends on how important that is to you. I was looking at our CC and they have transfer agreements with some of the Texas State universities [namely Texas A&M which my kids are interested in attending]. Check it out.
  4. I am not a 'deep thinker' either so I appreciated the availability of the sparks notes.
  5. My son did: Saxon Alg 1 in 8th grade Saxon Alg 2 in 9th Saxon Adv. Math 10th and one semester of 11th He will be taking Calculus 1, 2 and 3 at the CC.
  6. We completed VFCR and I am now looking for vocab for next year; VFA is looking very good.
  7. Another hater of that book. I am not sure how it made it as a Classic. I started reading it with my twins and we only made it to about chapter 3. Eeek.
  8. Indeed, in ps it is allowed for students to leave school and go to a job. By the time the students are seniors they already have enough credits to graduate, at that time they are working on interest subjects. I know for my kids they will have plenty of credits by the time they are seniors.
  9. My twins have started taking classes at our local CC; both are taking classes online. They are considered dual credit. They are allowed to take a total of 27 credit hours for free. We pay for the books. JUST AN FYI.....There was a discussion some time back about students going over 30 hours while in high school and what impact that would have on their enrollment status at a 4 yr college. Would the student go in as a Freshman or a Transfer student? The scholarship money is HUGE between the two. I don't remember the specifics, maybe someone else does.
  10. My twins have also used Saxon all the way. For my kids it has been very good. My son who was already strong in Math, really jumped in and did well. My dd learned that she is much better at math than she thought she was. Excellent series!
  11. Yes, he is American. I had planned on the twins reading him this year, but I don't think we will have time. I want to add something in the Sci-Fi genre and this seems to fit the bill. The kids have already said they don't want to read the Lord of the Rings. Are there some other good Brit Sci-fi reads?
  12. Thanks for the suggestion. I had not considered that the reads were kind of dark. I would like them to have some fun reads.
  13. We will also be doing Brit Lit for next year. I too am looking for suggestions for good reads as well. For short stories and poetry we will be using Perrine's Structure, Sound and Sense. So far our reading list includes: Frankenstein, Jane Eyre, Pride and Predjudice and Slaughterhouse 5. I am torn between Macbeth and Hamlet. Consider both maybe? I am also torn between A Tale of Two Cities and Great Expectations. I had not considered Doyle, Sherlock Holmes. I will add him in. Any other suggestions?
  14. My spouse dropped a cabinet on ours and it cost about $200 to replace.
  15. Absolutley get the kit it is money well spent. Other than that all you need is the book, tests and solutions manual.
