  1. Wow - Beautiful! My DD is a level 5, and says Congrats on beam especially :-)
  2. I found a 1986 Holt Physical Science Teacher's Edition book at Goodwill for $1.99. It is middle school level…. would there be any reason I couldn't use this next year for my 8th and 6th graders Physical science? Maybe along with a Thames and Kosmos Physics Workshop set (maybe Chem too) and SnapCircuits with guide? They have already done Ellen McHenry's Elements, and will be doing Carbon Chemistry, so the fact that there would be fewer elements presented wouldn't matter. And we have also used Elemental Science Earth Science and Astronomy (with the older child), so those topics are covered. But other than that, I have no idea if anything else has changed! (Before finding it I was thinking about using Elemental Science Physics for the logic stage, or Exploration Education, or Kolbe's Physical science). Thank you - any help will be greatly appreciated!
  3. I did watch some of the first season of Child Genius. But I couldn't stomach it… Now, King of the Nerds DD and I love!
  4. We've used the Alice, Peter , Mole literature trilogy. My kids like the grammar boxes - it reminds them to pay attention to the details. I really like the socratic questions, discussions that ensue from the parent manual, as well as using some of the questions for written response essays. We will be using other trilogies as well. hth
  5. My son got a few of them last year… he was 12 and absolutely loved it. My daughter, ten at the time, got the doodle crate as well…. she enjoyed it but really any craft set from any store would have been equally good.
  6. My son did all of MM6 alongside AOPS pre-Algebra. Mostly to fix the holes left from public school. That being said, yes the topics are mostly the same, but that is where the similarities end, IMO. Would he have been ready for AOPS Algebra having only done MM6. Sure. But, he is certainly more prepared and is having a much easier time because he is used to and enjoys the AOPS style. I wouldn't skip AOPS pre-algebra…. I would skip the MM6 or 7, or SM6, if anything. :-) Oh yes it would be worth it to at least do some…. DS says at least do the geometry - he loved that! lol
  7. Yes, you could certainly use just the Caesar's English books. :-) We use all the components of the program and love how it all meshes together. I think they flow seamlessly. It truly is not difficult to use the different components together. I know it seemed daunting at first, but it really isn't. Fur us, Caesar's English if the most time consuming.
  8. Here is my tentative plan…6th and 8th grader together for all but math…. 8th grader Math: AOPS Intermediate Algebra, and he says he also wants to do Intro to Geometry 6th grader Math: AOPS Intro to Algebra, which she will probably start before this year ends Together Latin: Visual Latin 2 Language Arts : MCT level 4; MCT Time literature; maybe some MP study guides; lots of good books History: Notgrass America the Beautiful; with Lit for 6th grader and alternate lit for 8th grader MP Geography 1 for 6th grader ; MP Geography 3 for 8th grader Science: Either Elemental Science Physics for Logic stage (or maybe Exploration Education Advanced) Co-op classes: Whatever is offered, but 8th grader will at least continue with German Sports: 8th grader plays basketball 3 times a week 6th grader is a competitive gymnast, trains 5-6 days a week
  9. Here is my tentative plan, though I change my mind constantly.. 8th grader Math: AOPS Intermediate Algebra, and he says he also wants to do Intro to Geometry 6th grader Math: AOPS Intro to Algebra, which she will probably start before this year ends Together Latin: Visual Latin 2
  10. I used Elemental science Earth Science and Astronomy logic stage with my then 6th grader, It is straightforward, and he really learned a lot. We did add in videos and alternate books as we found them. As for the writing, yes that can be overwhelming. However, you do not need to assign all of it. For example, when the child is supposed to either outline or summarize the readings, you could do that orally. I would suggest writing down the answers to the discussion questions so they will have a study guide for the tests - if you will use them. We found the tests to be fair - required review and some studying, without being overwhelming. The vocab words - only a few are assigned each week. you could make flash cards out of them We generally did it 2 - 3 days a week. Day one was experiment day. Most supplies were easy to get, or I already had. On average, this day took the longest, about an hour. Day two he would do the readings and outline, and discuss. Day three, he would do vocab, dates and sketch (sometimes he did these on days one and two). As well as any additional readings. Oh, and we used the pdfs Though I love the look of the books! Yes we enjoyed it. And recommend it.
  11. Oh my mistake, I thought it was new….thx!
  12. Yes, I think it just came out maybe last spring. It looks fabulous. I am just hoping someone has it and can share a little more info about it.
  13. If you have used it, how much time does it take weekly? What does the honors level work entail? We are finishing up SOTW this year, and I plan to use Notgrass ATB next year (as is for my then to be 6th grader) . For my then 8th grader, I am thinking about adding Memoria Press Geography III, and pulling research assignments from it (he has already done a year of US History, and will finish World HIstory and Civics this year). I just can't find good information on daily/ weekly time or the honors level option. Thank you
  14. My seventh grader is using Soaring with Spelling 7, and he likes it. It makes him slow down and think about proper spelling. And it includes vocabulary (although the vocab is pretty light). It takes about ten minutes a day.
  15. DD is 10. She does every problem, then watches the videos, every exercise, every chapter review question and every challenge question. She seldom needs help, and when she does it is usually just a hint. She is working on Alcumus occasionally, maybe once a week.
  16. Hi, This is my first post…. my DD usually does one section in an hour, problems and exercises. Not always, though, due t the variety of difficulty presented. She is starting on the ch. 4 review problems, so I don't know how she will do later in the book. When my DS did it last year, he was much slower… problems one day, exercises over the next one or two days. We keep math to 60 minutes a day, only occasionally going over.
