  1. Would it work to do them concurrently? I'm wondering now if there is more math in chemistry now than in the past - I took it in 9th without having taken algebra 1 {in fact didn't take algebra 1 until the next semester}. Either that or my Saxon Math teaching was enough to get by with.
  2. DD is a science loving kiddo, always has been. On average I would say she is 1-2 grades ahead in science. But her math skills are behind fwiw, although we are working on bringing those up to speed. Going into 5th/6th this year, and I'm planning out future year tentative plans {with a strong understanding that they may need to be changed} as the long range plan helps me a lot. I have the following Apologia Science books on my shelf {and I need to use what is on my shelf and not buy unless absolutely needed}: Young Explorers Human Anatomy Young Explorers Zoology 2 {we would also cover the 1st chapter of 1 that is available online first} Exploring Creation with General Science {1st ed} Exploring Creation with Physical Science {1st ed} Exploring Creation with Chemistry {1st ed} Exploring Creation with Biology {1st ed} Exploring Creation with Physics {1st ed} What order would you complete these in? I am thinking of this: 5th Human Anatomy or Zoology 2 {which would you choose, given this plan?} 6th General science 7th Physical science 8th Biology {and give high school credit} 9th Chemistry 10th Physics And leave 11th and 12th open for either advanced science courses or duel enrolled college level science classes Really just wanting a second opinion here mostly :) x-posted to the hi

  4. Chickens here as well. I got 6 female chicks 6 weeks ago, so we should end up starting to get eggs somewhere between September and Christmas lol. And I'm trying potatoes in tires. Picked up a bunch of tires to use as planters in the bulk pickup last time. I scrubbed them with dish soap to remove any grease, then planted my seed potatoes in them. Every time I need to cover the plants again I just add another tire.
  5. Have you considered a Teardrop? They run about 1000lbs, sleep two, and have a small kitchen off the back. Your dining area would be outdoors though, but I've seen it work well. They are fairly cheap, or you can even build it yourself if you & your hubby are handy with tools. This youtube video is a pretty good example of a home built teardrop - I fell in love with teardrop trailers as a kid. Still love them 25 years later :) Here is another good video too -
  6. Now see THAT I don't agree with. No one should be forced to tip a certain %. IMO Tipping is based on the service received. I know many friends in college who worked in the food industry who thought the same. And very very often the service received in a large group is not as good. I've been in large groups where we were pretty much ignored by the staff and had to take our own drinks up to the counter for refills. Plus especially with the whole mandatory gratuity thing that a lot of places do. Tipping on top of that - no way.
  7. It's silly but - how to buckle a seatbeat. We don't have a car, and only rarely use a taxi or ride with friends - most of the time we use city bus. I realized the other day that my dd had no clue how to buckle herself in. Tax is something we need to work on here too. I haven't even covered tipping at all yet, as we don't normally eat out at places where you tip
  8. Just got an email back from her - looks like it is shutting down per her email I quoted below. Really sad to see it go - it was a major blessing to many I know.
  9. Very true, even here in the USA. I was offered a large sign-on bonus if I joined either the Air Force or Navy straight out of high school. When I told the recruiter{in passing - I had no intention of signing up} that I had a severe medical issue that was liable to put me into a wheelchair within the next 5 years, and that I'd never pass a military physical with all my health issues, he didn't even blink an eye. His response was "That's what they make runners for. We want you for your brain not your brawn. An aide can be appointed to push your wheelchair."
  10. I've toyed with the idea of getting Expecto Patromum tattoed on my inner arm, as a reminder that I need to pull on the good memories when I'm feeling down.
  11. Agreed. IMO they should have removed the draft entirely, not expanded it. Plus how are they going to handle things like single parents with no family support in a draft situation? Would they force the drafted mom to put the children into foster care? I've known quite a few folks who were in that position before turning 18, so obviously there needs to be some type of rules for that as well.
  12. I can see the group, but can't post. It tells me to join the group to be able to post, but there is no option to join ETA: NM - got it. Had to go back to the main group page & join from there.
  13. Might need to go in the politics section but I don't have access. The US Senate just voted to make all women eligible for the draft, just like men. http://www.nytimes.com/2016/06/15/us/politics/congress-women-military-draft.html?smid=fb-share I haven't heard a peep about this in the news honestly, which worries me.
  14. They can be, yes. For us that was an opportunity to discuss how racism is no longer acceptable, where when these were written it was a part of american culture. I wouldn't hand them off to a child without some guidance, but I don't see a problem with a child reading them either as long as they understand they are from a different time and the cultural norms were different.
  15. Series books - The Happy Hollisters and The Bobbsey Twins {but get the OLD ones, because they rewrote them in the 70's}. Both are just nice wholesome stories for elementary age kids. Almost twaddle but not quite.
  16. I emailed on the 11th and have not heard back yet :( I found this earlier post on the boards here http://forums.welltrainedmind.com/topic/586659-book-samaritans-website-goneupdated/?hl=%2Bbook+%2Bsamaritan#entry6825766 -looks like there has been issues since February or so
  17. Step 1: Figure out roughly what subjects I need to cover for this grade. Step 2: Figure out what I have on my shelves that I can use. See which are suitable and which simply will not work. Step 3: Figure out what I'm going to have to buy / borrow. Step 4: After I get all materials together, figure out how many schooling days we have in the year {we try to stay roughly with the PS calendar except for taking spring break a different week}, subtract 15 days or so for field trips / sickness / etc, then figure out roughly how many pages of each book need to be done daily. Normally I put a post-it note inside the cover that says "4 pages daily" or something similar. Step 5: revise daily expectations when we never end up meeting them :)
  18. Our fridge has an ice maker, but it's broken AND also not hooked up since there is no water line by my fridge and no way to put one without major renovations. So I use ice trays most of the year, but in summer I buy ice. Ice trays can't keep up with 100+ degree temps and no a/c.
  19. Money is very much an object here as well. What I would do with it changes from year to year. In a perfect world, I'd probably opt for private school this coming year, since I'm pretty much burnt out.
  20. Wondering as well. I was hoping to put in a request this year for some needed materials, but it looks like it's been in limbo since about April or so from digging around online. I am considering emailing her to see if it is just a long move or if it has closed
  21. If I'm brewing from scratch, I use whatever tea bags I have. The key for me is to MIX black tea & green tea - 2-3 black and 1-2 green. Then make sun tea with it. That being said 99% of the time I cheat and use the Luzianne ice tea concentrate. $1 each and they make a gallon in seconds that tastes decent. We can go through 2 gallons a day easy around here if dd's friends are here.
  22. I hate eating dinner with my dd too {most of the time}. She gets her plate & heads for either her tablet or the TV {with educational programming}. I get mine and head for my laptop on the other end of the house. I figure we get enough time together that we don't need the "family conversation" at dinner.
  23. Single parent here, so dd is with me pretty much 24/7. I regularly send my dd out to play {or to her room with a book / movie / tablet} and shut my door for a little alone time. She is 9 though so I can do that. She knows if I say I need time alone and my door is shut, that she is not to bother me unless she truly needs something or it's an emergency. I also LIVE for summer when she goes to VBS. An entire week {or more if I sign her up for multiple ones} of alone time every day for 2-3 hours a day! I've also sometimes had the neighbor's granddaughter watch her for a bit - she is old enough to supervise with an adult she can go to with issues.
  24. Recycle everything that can be. Compost - if you setup a compost bin and entice black soldier flies to lay their eggs in it, the larve process it very very fast! Chickens - seriously chickens. Chickens can eat almost any leftovers and are happy to do it. And they'll give you back wonderful eggs in trade. reuse a lot of things. I don't use cloth bags for grocery shopping - instead I get the plastic ones and save them for projects around the house. Right now I'm saving them to stuff lawn chair cushions with.
  25. Is this a college class? If so I'd take printouts / screen shots of tests, recorded grades, etc and see the dean on the department. I had a professor try to do this to me in college - my final grade as she reported it was a 84 {B}. I double checked all my papers and it should have averaged out to a 96 {A+}. I talked to the dean, the dean talked to the professor and she corrected it. I was on a academic scholarship where I had to keep a 3.5 average, and I needed that A!
