  1. OhElizabeth, what would you suggest to make the VP Self Paced Online class more age appropriate? I am trying really hard to make sure that classes for my ds are appropriately challenging. I have a tendency to make things too easy for my dc. My ds would be perfectly content to do the self paced, but I want him to learn those skills you mentioned...he is an older 7th grader, too. Also, it has to be super easy for me...lots of stuff going on with me and in my family. I just can't continue to personally teach it all. I have got to let some things go...not completely, but you know what I mean...the actual teaching time. So, what would you do?
  2. I talked to BJU the other day...they have redone the BJU 8 American Republic class on DVD. Mr. Swingle is the one teaching it. He is the one on the BJU 9th grade Geography DVD sample just so you will know which one he is. The new DVD for Am Rep will be available early June, I believe.
  3. I checked on the Earth & Space science. You are right, OhElizabeth...there is a 4th edition. BJU says it is a 1-2 year lag between new editions and new DVD teaching. I hope it is 1 year as my ds would be ready for it not this year, but the next.
  4. Thanks, everyone, for your comments. It is so helpful. OhElizabeth, your comment is particularly reassuring because I value your judgement so much. Hey, maybe I should quote you in my signature! Thank you for responding! Truth be told, I do get concerned over using TT. My heart just sang when I read "BJU is solid and traditional in scope and sequence..."
  5. The edition used for the DVD class is the 3rd edition. OhElizabeth or anyone who knows, is there a more recent edition than that? Thanks.
  6. Now, I like the sound of that...spiral and mastery...the best of both worlds...hmmm. Would the rest of you agree with that analysis? Does anyone know how it would compare to TT? I know TT is spiral...maybe I'm meaning how the scope and sequence compares.
  7. I have heard that the writing instruction in the upper levels is sparse. Has that been your experience?
  8. What did they do prior to the BJU upper level math classes? Which thread did you mean for me to look at for the details?
  9. Do you mind me asking what they did prior to BJU? I'm concerned about whether my dd will have the background for it.
  10. Hi Lisa, Thank you for responding. Yes, she has done a couple of years of Shurley. She has done well with it and really likes it. So, you are saying you recommend R&S7 after Shurley 7? Did you teach it or have your dc do it independently? I think you are right...I need to move through it more quickly. I tend to want to cover every. single. thing. thoroughly. But, sometimes that means unnecessary review. I had considered BJU DVD classes also, but I have no idea where to place her.
  11. Thank you. Your response was very helpful. I am at a crossroads and trying to decide which way to go, so all thoughts are welcome at this point. :D
  12. My up and coming 9th grader has Lyme disease. We have had to really lighten her load because of the way she feels. So, we have been trying to do Shurley 7 this year, but we haven't gotten very far. If you were faced with starting high school the next year, would you finish Shurley 7 or do something else? I'm wondering about BJU w/ DVD's? We tried AG, but that didn't work very well. Any ideas?
  13. Is there a particular reason for the above programs? We have been using LFC A. Just wondering. :)
  14. I taught all 6 of my dc to read using the Abeka 1st grade program. It really gets the job done! I ventured away one year to try OPGTR...it just didn't work well for one of my sons, so I went back to Abeka. It is extremely thorough and you can make any program as fun as you want it to be. :D
  15. I am referring to their science, math, & english. Thanks! :)
  16. Wow. 3rd thread...I'm on a roll. I am wondering what BJ is like at this level. I have heard that if you do BJ english up through their 10th, you would be ready for college...is that true?
  17. Is it mainly literature? If you are still using grammar, what do you use? What about writing, etc?
  18. I am wondering what your thoughts are on this. I would be using the DVD's.
  19. So, you think I could teach them Latin and do the Spanish coop the same year? And it wouldn't confuse them? I know lots of people have learned Spanish or whatever without doing Latin first, but if I'm able to swing it, I would still like them to learn Latin.
  20. Thank you so much for responding. It is nice to know that it is working well for your families. It seems I had heard people say there wasn't enough review, but spiral means lots of review, right?
