  1. Are helping verbs part of the simple predicate? Or is is just the main verb that is considered the simple predicate? Thanks!
  2. I saw on the website that it takes 15 mins. two times a week. Is that for the DVD portion alone or does that time cover everything? I would love to hear from someone who has used it. Thank you so much!
  3. I am trying to figure out my schedule for next year. I can't get the writing thing figured out. I want to use MC, but not sure how to do that while teaching Shurley English. I know I can substitute MC for the Shurley Writing part for that one day, but what about the other days? It would be so easy because I wouldn't have to figure out how to coordinate two programs. But, the question is...would I be happy with the writing? I've used Shurley a bunch and have always skipped the writing. So, has anyone used the Shurley writing portion and liked it? Hmmm...lots of them and not enough of me! (teaching 6 dc) Anyone ever feel like that? Thanks!
  4. It came right up! What is the deal with that? Thanks for the link!
  5. Okay, I tried it again, OhElizabeth, & it says Windows Media Player is not installed. Windows doesn't work on a MAC, does it? Or am I completely confused? My technologically challenged side is showing again!!! Humbling, ain't it?
  6. Thank you, Crystal! That is a big help. I think that *I* am part of the problem as far as follow up...just busy with teaching 6. I just checked out OWL at Purdue. I had never heard of that. Thanks for the tip! What a great reference tool. Do you do a regular conference time? If you do, what do you discuss? Julie, that is a good idea. I agree that more essays would be important. Are there particular assignments that you feel lend themselves to that? When is the research paper assigned?
  7. These look so great! The thing is that my dd will be doing an Apologia Chemistry lab coop, so I think she'll be lost if she doesn't use Apologia. If you have used these DVD's as a supplement to Apologia, how did you schedule it? I looked at Apologia's DVD's with Rusty Hughes, but it looks so boring! Has anyone used these DVD's to help me out? I don't know if they just picked a particularly boring part of the book as a sample or if it is like that all the time. Do you ever see him in the teaching segments? Or is it just a white board? Thanks!
  8. I tried to watch the Georgia PBS Sample & I can't because my internet is on a MAC. Bummer, huh? What do you think of Chemistry 101? I loved the samples!
  9. Thank you, OhElizabeth...as usual, you have great ideas! I'll check it out. Coffeegal, because of health issues, we delayed beginning high school, so she is already an older student. I think the maturity level is probably okay...I think my hesitation may be because I have zero confidence in *my* abilities with chemistry...therefore, I am wondering how I would help her if she gets stuck. That is why I am interested in Apologia's DVD's. Does anyone have experience with Chemistry 101 Dvd's?
  10. OhElizabeth, thank you for that great idea! Do you have a suggestion as to a particular one?
  11. My dd is doing Apologia's Biology this year as well as Algebra I. So, I know she will have the math necessary to do Chemistry, but she is not what I would call mathy. We are pretty much average math folks around here. She did find Biology to be pretty challenging. She had a hard time keeping up with the schedule and will have work to do over the summer to finish up. (She has chronic health issues) She would be taking a Chemistry coop lab and have access to someone who really knows science and could answer questions. So, that is a plus. Also, I have considered getting Apologia's DVD's for further explanation. Bottom line question...does it look better on a transcript to have Chemistry on it? Meaning that would be a more rigorous academic path? But, then, what if she struggles in it? Not really sure what she wants to do at this point, though, so we are trying to have her prepared for anything. I really think she is going to end up as a missionary in Uganda...but, who knows if she might use a nursing degree within that context.
  12. Thank you guys for responding. Just curious...Did your dc do the Writing Strands rec. before high school or had they already covered what was necessary in the writing dept.? Julie, thank you so much for your thoughts. You are absolutely right about this year having been a transition year. Her health issues prevented the two years prior from being the bridge to high school that I had hoped they would be. We actually had to delay starting high school a year. So, this year we just had to start...ready or not. My concern, I guess, is what if next year goes the same way? What if she has a hard time getting it done again? For this year, I can see giving the 1/2 credit for Ancient History. Also, I had the same thought about IEW making up the rest of the English credit. She spent a lot of time on that. She only did two of the essays...that is how behind she is. I'm sure that is why she is not more comfortable with it. I am just really regretting not having insisted on more writing in previous years. Would you mind giving me an idea of the type of writing assignments other than the research paper? The "looser" writing assignments in WHL concern me a bit. I think I might have to get a source other than Writing Inc for that if we stick with MFW. How long is the paper supposed to be, btw? She and I both do better with step by step instruction. Something along the line of Meaningful Composition's style. I guess I could get a level of that and just use it for the different assignments...IF I can find a level that covers some of the same things that MFW would require. I would love to hear more of your thoughts. Thanks again!
  13. This year was my dd's first year of high school. I so need some help deciding about a couple of things. I learned a lot about her this year. She is self motivated for the most part (when she is feeling good). She is bright, a deep thinker, & a perfectionist. Also, she has some chronic health issues that interfere with her schoolwork sometimes. She did MFW AHL this year. She really loves that program...right down her alley...BUT she had a very hard time getting it all done! She works very slowly. In fairness to her...we also did an every other week writing coop where she completed IEW SWI-C. She needed to do that because she hasn't had that much formal writing instruction. So, it was next to impossible to get all the MFW done as well as her assignments from coop. She was so overwhelmed at times that I finally told her to set a timer and just do one hour with each subject. She has formed that habit, but she just doesn't seem able to get a full day of MFW in often enough to really make progress. (health issues effect this, remember) I really wanted her to have a lot of writing instruction during her high school years. She is very good at writing, but needs more practice with essays, etc. She would not be comfortable, for example, if I told her to write one. She would need a lot of help from me. I didn't realize that with MFW you needed to go into high school with writing instruction pretty much completed. At least that is the way it seems. So, I keep wanting to add writing instruction because I think we will be stressed without more hand holding than MFW offers. I don't want to have to rewrite the curriculum to fit the writing in, though. I had a hard time figuring all that out this year with coop. (I am teaching 6 dc, so I need open and go) So, long story short...she loves MFW, but hasn't completed nearly what I wish she had. I am not sure it is wise to go into another year of it. But, I'm not at all sure what I would replace it with. She has grown spiritually from doing MFW and to me, that is so very important! Much more important than anything in the long run of life. That makes me want to try it again, but I keep waffling back and forth. We will not be doing a writing coop this year, btw. So, would you continue with MFW if this was your child? Thanks so much...sorry it's so long, but I felt the background was important to be able to answer my question. Blessings!!!!
  14. Thank you, loulou belle. That *is* helpful. :)
  15. Thank you, Denise. I didn't know if you could just jump into, say, level 7 without the prerequisite of having done 6+? How much teacher time do you feel MC requires? I'm thinking 30 mins. a day? It's a little hard to tell with the way it is laid out what to do together (with me) and what to do independently. How did you schedule it? If I do that (because I really want to emphasize writing this year) could we do 2 books in a year? Maybe 6+ first semester and 7-1 second semester? Thank you both so much for answering my post! I have given up on getting a solid answer from the company.
  16. I really want to use this program. I am just having a hard time deciding where to place my dc. I have contacted the company and they have responded...barely. So frustrating. I need to speak with them, but they won't call me back. I have also emailed. The response was to try the level below their grade and if that is easy to them, go up. I want to meet three dc in the middle, so it is not a cut and dry question. I also want to know what the sequence would be for the next couple of years if I stay with the program. If there is someone who has used MC and can help, I would be so grateful. I will be teaching three at one time who did the IEW SWI this year...two did level A and one did C. They will be in 6th, 7th, & 8th grades. It will work fine to combine them because Level A was below two of them and Level C was above the other one. (They only offered two levels at the coop we did) I want this year to count for my 8th grader in writing so he will be ready for high school. But, I have to teach the three at the same time due to time constraints. What level do you think would work for the three of them? Also, I have two boys who will be in 4th next year, but haven't done much writing so far. Do you think 4+ would work for them? (Such a bummer to not be able to copy the books even within my own family!) Thanks so much!!!
  17. www.classicalacademicpress.com is the address...sorry...I am technologically challenged.
  18. Could it be that I have found an answer as to how to get Latin to actually happen at my house??? I don't know...need to look at it some more. Just curious what everyone thinks about it.
  19. I have a friend whose son is in public school. He has diabetes and evidently it is not very well under control because it has caused him to miss lots of days this year. He feels bad a lot and she can't bare to force him to physically go to a school any longer. She is considering homeschooling, but works full time herself. So, she needs an online school that would handle grading and everything for her. She checked into a school called Ogburn...anyone heard of it? I called and didn't get a good feeling about it. I confess that I am at a loss as to what to tell her. Any ideas? I need the mind of the hive on this one. Thank you so much! My friend was in tears on the phone and I would so love to make it all better!
  20. Thank you so much, Lori. I forgot about Number the Stars. I had considered The Hiding Place. Such a disturbing period of history, don't you think? It is hard to figure out how to handle it. I think the Hiding Place may work, although I find the movie difficult to watch. Not because of how it is done. . .just because it is an intense theme. Yet, as you say, Corrie's faith is so admirable. Maybe that is the way to go. Thank you very much for clarifying the ages you used the various titles...very helpful.
