  1. I would love to hear what you think...the positive and the negative.
  2. Every year, we start out doing latin. Every year, we end up not having done much because the basic classes take so much time with teaching 6 dc. I still think I want to do it, though. It seems that I remember someone saying it would be best to have a year of Latin before learning another language so that it wouldn't be confusing to try to learn two different languages at the same time. My dc have an opportunity to learn Spanish from someone who speaks the language. I hate to miss that opportunity. What would you do? Thanks!:)
  3. :bigear: I have the same questions. I, too, had thought about adding a workbook. I don't want to if it's not necessary, though.
  4. Thank you, Caia. I will definitely pm you later. I do have more questions. Gotta start school right now. Have a great day!
  5. Yes, I believe they are mostly updated. Thank you for your comment about their math. I think math is a hard one to get figured out. That is the subject I would be most concerned about changing. Gayle, I'm just curious...did you use the extra review sheets I've read about for your daughter? I was wondering if you used those and it still wasn't enough review. I like the idea of using their math with the dvd's, but I wouldn't want to teach it on my own. We are currently using TT, which has been a big relief to me. If we scraped the money together to use the dvd's this year and then couldn't next year, I wouldn't want to switch again. The other subjects wouldn't be as big a deal to use something else, kwim?
  6. I may use some BJU subjects next year and I am not sure what level to use, so I am interested in these tests. How long do they take to administer? If you used them, did you feel they were a good indicator of the best level of reading and math?
  7. We would be using the DVD's. Jess, are you using those or teaching it on your own? I think it takes a while for grammar to sink in anyway. I don't think I would be too concerned at that level about whether they are retaining it...I think they probably just haven't had the light bulb moment yet. Grammar isn't very exciting anyway.
  8. Gayle, your post was so helpful! Did you do their placement tests? I had wondered about their math. My dc are doing TT. I hate to switch math...(again) How was it not a good fit, if you don't mind my asking.
  9. I also like the idea of the writing being incorporated. I am tired of trying to reinvent the wheel...find the best grammar, the best spelling, the best blah, blah, blah...I just want it easy now. I also feel that my dc would benefit from many, many things if I go that route.
  10. How did the adjustment go when you changed them over? Was it hard to get used to for you? for them? Thanks so much for talking to me about this. I have been looking for a way to shorten my teaching day and still provide an excellent education for my dc. I'm sure BJU would provide them with much more than I ever could. Do you think BJU w/ DVD's is easier than you doing the teaching? Have you found it difficult to grade? We have health issues here also. (Lyme disease) So, I am trying to figure out how to have enough energy to do everything I need to do...house & meals & laundry also. Right now, school gets done. But, it takes me all day & I don't have much energy left for the rest of life. :tongue_smilie:
  11. Thanks, Gayle. I will either do a combo of BJU subject kits & what I was already doing...or just go for it and do the grade level kits. Next year, I will have 2 third graders, a 5th grader, a 6th grader, a 7th grader, & a 9th grader. I'm glad to hear it's not so difficult to copy everything. Knowing me, I would do all the copying over the summer and be really familiar with it before starting in the fall. Being familiar with the program, do you think it would be really difficult to switch over all at once? My dh is a little leery of that. I guess I am too, but I don't want to keep waiting IF we can afford to get them. Have you used the grade level kits or individual subjects? Any subjects you recommend more than others?
  12. I would be using the DVD's for most subjects. If you have made the switch, how did it go? Any thoughts or suggestions about this radical change???
  13. I am familiar with Shurley, but not as much with Bob Jones English. How is BJ English to teach? What has your experience been with it? Is it easy to implement? I am trying to decide between the two.
  14. A friend of mine used the DVD program several years back. She said it was a nightmare trying to organize it. She said she would have to go print stuff out a lot and grading it was difficult. I see in the catalog that they now have daily lesson plans. That was one of her complaints...at that time, each of the teachers' plans were laid out differently. She found it confusing and difficult to follow. What has your experience been? Do you still have to print a lot of stuff out? How time consuming is it to prepare for and grade the class work? I was all excited about the BJU DVD program and then I talked with my friend. I am so hoping that everything has been updated and I wouldn't run into the kind of problems she had. I know she was sort of overwhelmed anyway because she has 10 dc. Only ONE of them was using the BJU program, though. So she wasn't trying to sort through it all with that many children. I may be using it with 6 dc, though, so it has to be easy to implement or it will feel nightmarish to me too! :) I would so appreciate hearing from someone who has used the program with the daily lesson plans recently. Thank you very much!
  15. Based on looking at the samples, it seems to me it would be fine. I'm not sure about the teacher. The samples have the lady, but under resources, it states that Mr. Swingle is the instructor. I hope it is Mr. Swingle. I think my son would do well with a male instructor at this point.
  16. Thank you, Daisy May, for your response. Who is the teacher for American Republic? On the BJU site sample video, it is a woman, but under resources, it states that Mr. Swingle is teaching it. My ds is not as self motivated as your dd. Do you still think it would be doable? In what way was it challenging? The tests? Understanding the text? Answering the text questions after reading? Thank you so much. :)
  17. Do you think this is doable for a 7th grader? We will be using the DVD course.
  18. We will be using the DVD course. Do you think this course is doable for a 7th grader?
  19. :) I think i have decided on the Wonders of Creation series...Fossil book, etc. I'm thinking maybe do 4 this year. What do you think?
