  1. I posted this question earlier, but it has disappeared. Does anyone know of a fun geography for 3rd, 5th, 6th, & 7th? I would love for it to include states and capitols. So, I guess mainly a US geography that can be done in a semester. (I am looking at MFW ECC for next year. I'm considering it anyway. ) Thank you!
  2. Yes. I am having trouble also. I was doing a search about geography and nothing came up. I posted about that earlier today.
  3. I called to ask when there would be another group buy. They said not this year. Hope that helps.
  4. My 9th grader's day is running pretty long. I am trying to figure out how to make it work. She has health issues and school is really stressing her out. She is doing MFW for Bible, English, & History; Apologia's Biology and a Biology co-op, and Algebra I. This is a huge change from last year. I do not want to tweak to the point that it isn't high school level work, though. I'm not quite sure how to make it all work. Her energy level is an issue. 6 hours for a healthy high schooler may be just fine. I'm just wondering if it's too much for her, considering her health challenges. Any thoughts or suggestions? Surely someone else has run into this? Thanks! :)
  5. I own Shurley 1 & 3. We did about 1/2 of Shurley 1 last year when they were in 2nd. They are in 3rd grade this year, and I am changing what I was originally using for them this year. I was hoping to be able to avoid buying Level 2, although my gut says that would be perfect. I have just made a lot of expensive curriculum mistakes this year. :glare: Level 3 is a bit much for this year, I think. Next year, maybe. I don't mind them being a year behind as far as Shurley goes because it only goes through Level 7 to begin with. But, I'm not as comfortable with 2 years, kwim? I know a lot of people go from Level 1 to 3, but it looks like a *huge* leap to me. Thoughts? Ideas? Please be kind. I am already beating myself up over my expensive mistakes!!!!
  6. Angela, do you feel they are learning the actual rules or just the words from sheer repetition? My dc seem to think the jingles aren't very good. How do you implement it? Just trying to pick up some tips because I love that PZ is so independent and spelling is something I need to be non teacher intensive.
  7. I am, but not for history! ;) My dc love VP Self-Paced history & so do I!
  8. I am considering using Lively Latin this fall, but I would want to use the videos on the website. Do your dc like them? Do you find them effective? Do you have them watch the teaching segment and then complete the worksheet, which you then check?
  9. I am also interested in another group buy! Count me in when the time comes! ;)
  10. That panicky feeling hits all of us from time to time. It will pass. You have not ruined them. ;) You guys are just getting adjusted to starting school again. You can always gradually up your expectations of them as the year progresses if it isn't where you want it to be. The ps won't love them like you do or care about their progress like you do either!!! Hang in there!
  11. I did not realize that your ds was having some possible issues like dyslexia when I wrote my original reply. I think I would choose going through Abeka K at a comfortable pace for your ds. As far as blending goes, they are either ready or not, imo. I would focus on the letter sounds until he knows them really well. Then, attempt the blending. With one of my sons, a friend told me to put it down for a while because he was not getting the whole blending thing...he just wasn't ready to do it. We picked it up a while later and it was easy as pie to him! To get the blending, they need to be ready and also really know their letter sounds well so that they aren't struggling to remember the sound and *also* struggling to learn blending. It sounds like you are on your way to making a decision. I wish you well! Blessings to you!
  12. Thank you, everyone! It is so helpful to hear different ideas. I spent some time in my school room starting the organization process yesterday. I think I've got it figured out. I think the reason it feels overwhelming is because 5 of my dc will be doing 3-4 classes each. That is a lot of material! God is faithful, though...and a God of order. He helped me tons yesterday...through you guys as well as calming my anxious heart! :)
  13. I have taught all 6 of my dc using Abeka's 1st grade program. If I were in your shoes, I would go with Abeka 1. I think your dc will be just fine with that. You can always slow it a little *if* it feels too fast, but I do not think it will. There is a lot of repetition and it very gradually moves to more advanced words by the end of the program. I disagree with the opinion that you need their K program first. (I have never used their K program & my dc did great with it!) If your child were several years younger and really struggling...maybe. But, he knows almost all of his letter sounds! He'll do great! Btw, I personally found the TM to be essential to the program. It will not be as thorough if you try to piece it together. Have a great year!
  14. Okay, if I must beg, I will.....Pleeaaase help! :lol::lol::lol:
  15. I will be using BJU DL for the first time starting next month. I ordered *12* classes!!! How do I organize all this stuff??? (Mom's Minutes, Lesson Plans, manipulatives for math, keep up with the DVD for the class, etc.?) So, I guess I am asking 2 questions: How to organize the Teacher's stuff & how to organize the student stuff. Also, for *years* our school day has operated on a schedule organized by time segments. How long should I allow for the classes plus work? I understand that sometimes you have to pause the class for them to work a problem or something. So, if it is a 30 minute class, should I allow 45 minutes or an hour...in order to cover the class time plus any pauses, and the homework? What about a 45 minute class? Any advice or wisdom that you veteran BJU DL users have to offer will be very welcome! You should see my school room right now!!! Mama Mia! So much stuff!!!!! I am ready to start getting organized!!!! Specific classes: Math 3, English 3, Reading 3 Math 5, Reading 5 Math 6, English 6, Reading 6, Science 6 Fundamentals of Math, English & Lit 7, & Life Science Thanks so much!
  16. I ordered 6th grade math, science, and english. I didn't end up doing any 9th, although I will have a 9th grader. :) I am hoping it will be a fun, productive year...Lord willing, anyway!
  17. I purchased *13* DVD classes!!!! (I have 6 students) I have to teach right now, but I'll list them later if you want. :D
  18. Well, I went to a BJU Solutions meeting yesterday and ordered all my stuff. I took the TT6 text my son has been using this year and spent some time really looking at the difference in the depth of the topics covered in their 6th grade math vs. TT6. I was pretty amazed. Where TT6 would barely touch, their text would spend an entire chapter expounding on the topic! No way could my ds have gone into Fundamentals...he would have been shell shocked. So, I don't really like the number on the book, but I have to meet him where he is. We went for BJU6. Bless his heart, he said, "Whatever you think, Mom. I'm willing to try it." So, we're going to try it. The one thing the rep suggested that I decided to do is to use the Math 6 *new* text for their homework problems. That way, they would be more used to a format closer to the Fundamentals text and feel more ready for that. So, they'll use the old text for the DVD classtime; then use the new one for homework. I'm happy with that. It's good I got to show my ds the difference between TT & the BJU same grade level text. I think he understood for the first time what I mean when I say that the number on the book doesn't matter...it's the material covered within the book. Thanks, everyone, for all your thoughts on the matter. It is always so helpful. :)
  19. I didn't end up doing it, so I am no help whatsoever! Can't, for the life of me, remember why though. ;)
  20. My ds will be doing Life Science with the DVDs next year. I was curious as to what Activity Sheets you are referring to. I don't see anything like that listed with their materials needed for the DVDs, but it could be included in the teacher support materials. Do you have any idea?
  21. Amtmcm, thank you for your thoughts. It has reinforced my gut feeling about placing him in Fundamentals. That is a very good thing! :) Shari, thank you so much for sharing your experiences with BJU. Yes, I have been researching this all for *quite* a while! I am so ready to make a decision and be done with it. I am almost there! I have two 3rd graders, though, so it will be more in the $75 range for the Vacation Station workbooks. Do you know where I could find one of those CBD coupons? That could help some. Free shipping would probably make a difference to dear hubby! ;)
  22. Thank you, OhElizabeth and Shari. Your input has been invaluable. My gut feeling is to put him in the Fundamentals class. I really like the idea of getting the Vacation Station books. I'm going to talk to my dh about it. He may feel it's too much money by the time we buy 5 of them. Aren't they about $15? So, that would be $75. We'll see what he says. The only thing about the Vac. Station books is that we had a strange year and won't be finished until the end of June. Then, we take July off and start back in August. So, I'm not sure we would have *time* to do them. I really like the idea, though. Do you still think it would be worth it to get them? I guess we could work on them in August and then start the actual curriculum in Sept. What d'ya think?
  23. Do you think we should do BJU Math 6 this year? I am concerned about how difficult Fundamentals may be. Did you use the DVDs with Fundamentals? I was hoping that Mr. Harmon's teaching would be the thing that would make that level doable. This is such a hard decision to me. I know I want to do BJU, but the level for this particular child is hard to pick! He is an older 7th grader also, so that weighs into it to me also. Shari, what would you do? BJU Math 6 or Fundamentals? (both will be with DVD)
