  1. I don't actually see you offering any compelling reason against graduating at 18. It seems to be a personal prejudice against it. I had a host of valid reasons for red shirting my kindergartener. My dh was "held back" after his first year of kindy and is now a successful PhD. So I just dont foresee dire consequences.
  2. Latin prep is apparently for slightly younger kids like gr 5-8 and SYRWTL :Latin is for the older set. I got the latter.
  3. My 6.5 yr old dd loves them. My boys (11 and 14)hate them.
  4. I have the Galore Park. It's simple and smart. It is amusing but it's not fluffy. It's pretty much all meat. Left page is explanatory, right page is work to write or say. I'm not familiar with Latin but feel I can teach and learn with this.
  5. B6 is also a good idea, as well as the other suggestions of meds and calcium.
  6. We had science and reading detective software. Never opened reading but science was horrid. Super poor graphics, terribly dull text, grey color, not engaging at all. So much for the fabulous return policy too- it was a pain to even attempt to get the money back. I sold both here. Maybe others like them but our comp here is fine and I was terribly disappointed. Won't ever buy that stuff again in software form.
  7. Only way to know is an xray. When I broke my arm I knew bc I heard it crack. The dr misread a very clear xray but it was obvious to everyone else who saw the film including the tech.;)
  8. If your daughter enjoys romances I would really recommend the Georgette Hayer books. They are fantastic, sweet Austen type books with impeccable research and historical detail. They are completely harmless, have wonderful characters and are just a real treat. I adore them and have learnt so much looking up the funny things they mention, like different types of carriages, driving clubs, style of dress, major society players, and things like that. There isnt anything wrong with a good historical romance IMO. Id exploit the interest and find the things she likes to read.
  9. My son will naturally be 18 at the beginning of his senior year. The cut off for schools in IN is July 1 and he was red shirted before kindy bc he has a June birthday and I saw no reason to send a very young 5 yr old away all day for school. I can't tell you how happy I am I did this. It is exactly right for him. The idea that you MUST graduate before 18 makes no sense to me.
  10. You might really enjoy watching the doc I linked the story of too. Very strong catholic family- mom is a coach and the daughter the first native american to earn a basketball scholarship. Her sis joined her at U Louisville this year I believe.
  11. 500 Nations. It should also be available online. This is also interesting for a peek into modern day life on/ off the rez. http://www.npr.org/2011/05/14/136291897/mother-daughter-prove-themselves-off-the-rez
  12. I cant imagine who wouldnt find that helpful. I think ideally that is how science should be- interesting and passionate and hands on! Sounds fun!
  13. I think your bigotry is overriding your common sense. That certainly is not the case where I live or in any place I have lived.
  14. Don't be silly. We already admit hundreds or thousands of unqualified people every year. In Mass its now the law that daycare workers need a degree. We require a degree in the US for everything. We created an untenable system and now we have to sustain it and work within the system we created. We have hundreds of small colleges which are nothing but glorified high schools and holding pens for people who shouldnt be focusing on academic pursuits. In VA we had Longwood, Radford, ODU and several other colleges which would take anyone who applied.
  15. I wonder if we can look at that as a plus? I am teaching a rising 8th grader. Does that mean I can do whatever he wants for HS and help him get as high an ACT score as possible? Bc he has a passion right now for PVC pipe engineering and nerf guns. And if all that really matters is a decent ACT score I can quit wasting my time worrying about a lot of stuff I am obsessing over. Im nt a fan of games but if I have to play can I find a way to do it and maximize his interests?
  16. I think, 4wildberries, you are reacting to the same thing I find repellant in public ed- there is a game, the rules are somewhat arbitrary, and success depends not on intelligence necessarily, but whether or not you play the game. Its certainly a depressing state of affairs. I had thought if we skipped the early years of schooling we'd avoid the silly games, but apparently not- witness the AP thread. Unfortunately it may be typical of life for most of us. We all have to play the games at some point.
  17. I am catholic and I am fairly sure that every catholic church is now running checks on everyone who is working with kids in every parish.
  18. My dh and I just spent considerable time researching policy at a variety of schools Hampden Sydney William and Mary Wash U Harvard University of Cincinnati med school. What has been said about AP credit transfer, med school admittance, and etc here doesn't really fully express what we found in looking at each school. I hope no one happening upon this thread later takes opinions and thoughts here to be gospel bc many of the statements are misleading or incorrect.
  19. A bunch of ap exams which won't gain college credit seems like an awfully $$$ way to show rigor. It also seems a cute dodge by colleges who just want more $ per student. My dh was premed and on scholarship. His AP credits were key. He ended up a PhD in molecular phys with a specialty in endocrine systems. I find it very interesting that AP classes are not being used for their intended purpose but rather to pad the resume. Very disappointing.
  20. I have had excellent experiences here this spring both buying and selling.
  21. It would probably be cheap and a good idea to get a cease and desist letter from a lawyer telling her she has to stop harassing him. I assume you contacted the bank already and the cell phone carrier? You can press charges on theft at your own police station I would think. Let them do the foot work and contact the other for the info on the actual day.
  22. Its possible Theresa is a lay midwife. I notice they never outright declare their intention to birth at home and that they never call Theresa anything but a friend or doula. I imagine this may be a careful protection of her status and their liability. Homebirth is seen as rogue (even tho it shouldnt be) so I wonder if they feel like this is just a necessary precaution. Long labor. Anna was a trooper and I was surprised at how well Josh seemed to do with coaching. http://cfmidwifery.org/states/states.aspx?ST=AR Teresa is a licensed Direct Entry midwife.
