  1. Thank you, mom2bee. She does have basic computer skills like Word and Power Point, and enjoys working on computer graphics. Now thinking back, she did a few weeks of computer programming through the city's park and recreation program. I think she will love web design, do you have a book or website you can suggest? I remember hearing about Teen Coder, anyone has any experience?
  2. Thank you for posting this, l really needed to hear it. For the first child, everything was new and exciting and there was very little expectation. It was hard, but it was good and everyone was happy. The second time around, the child is different but the expectation is higher. I really needed to hear this, she is only 13 and she will learn. Higher expectation is my fault, not hers. She is good for a 13 year old and I should be happy with that. Thank you so much for this timely reminder!!
  3. Can someone suggest a beginner class for coding for my DD? She will be in G.9 in the fall and has no previous experience in computer science or coding. I'm asking this at the request of my older DS. DS is taking AP computer Science right now, but it was very difficult for him in the first three months because he had no prior knowledge. He struggled through all his assignments as others seemed to do them with ease. Although the course description said no prior knowledge required, most students had done some coding therefore had a relative easier start to the course. Because of this experience, DS strongly suggested that I looked into a beginner coding class for DD, so she wouldn't have to go through the same pain. Thanks so much!
  4. This looks great, I can't believe they are all free. So many great classes, hard to decide which one to try first. Thanks so much for sharing!
  5. I'm in GTA (Greater Toronto Area), maybe I can help a little. Museums/places to visit CN Tower, Ontario Science Center, Royal Ontario Museum, Art Gallery of Ontario, Beta Shoe museum, the aquarium, the zoo, Black Creek Pioneer Village. There are usually lots of street festivals, but March is not warm enough yet. There is only one toll road in GTA: Highway 407. There are no toll booths on the highway, everything is computerized and automatic. The sensor takes a picture of your license plate when you get on and off the road, then they send you a bill afterwards. Locals are billed monthly, I don't know how they deal with out of province plates. This means you don't need to have change for the toll road. This year has been really cold for us. We just had the coldest February in 150 years. Hope it will get warmer by the time you visit. Enjoy your time here!
  6. My son has just been accepted into an engineering school for the coming fall. Depends on how many courses/AP he is planning, I would say Physics and Chemistry are the most important. Since he already has Calculus AB, he might not need Calculus BC (depending on the school). Also he has English language, he might not need English Lit.. My son's school only give one credit for Englsih and one for Calculus, so going the extra mile will not help. I would suggest doing AP Physics C, AP Chemistry, AP computer science or just a regular computer programming class for next year. My two cents!
  7. My favorite is "The Millionaire Next Door". Very easy to read and lots of good simple tips. You can probably find it easily at your local library. http://www.amazon.com/Millionaire-Next-Thomas-Stanley-Ph-D-ebook/dp/B00CLT31D6/ref=sr_1_6?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1424358425&sr=1-6&keywords=millionaire+next+door
  8. I was hoping that the U of T refers to University of Toronto. Yeah, it is good to see U of T being mentioned here. My DS is accepted by U of T enginerring for this fall and we are very excited about this.
  9. DS has 228, but we're not Americans (proud to be Canadians though). Not qualified to be NMF 😔
  10. This is wonderful! Just curious, was she homeschooled? I hope my kids will be like that when they reach her age. Good job, mom!
  11. Hong Kong has a great system. Having an "Octopus Card" you can use any public transportation, subway, buses, ferries, trams etc. I don't think there is anywhere in Hong Kong that you cannot get to by public transit.
  12. Our boys were in the same class then. DS loved that class and felt Mrs. Harrison was a great teacher. Congrets to your DS.
  13. Hi Colleen, We are definitely thinking of Canadian schools, but we are not ruling out US schools either. Since DS did really well on American standardized tests, I thought he might have a good chance of getting a scholarship in the US. Canadian schools do look at SATs and APs, but I feel they are not regarded as highly here.
  14. I tried to use quote, but I guess I did it wrong. Lanny, I will definitely get DS to look at the collegeboard and college confidential websites. I checked the other website you linked, it is for Americans only. Thanks again! Sharon, thanks for the information on Manitoba, it's good to know. Unfortunately, we are in Ontario, and I have not heard about anything like this here. Thanks!
  15. Thanks Lanny for your advice. Sadly DS is not gifted athletically, musically maybe but he is not interested in pursuing that in college. I read on this board many American students receive large scholarships based on PSAT and SAT scores, I was hoping they might have something similar for international students. I will have to do more research later, hopefully something might turn up. Thanks for taking the time to reply!

  17. Snowbeltmom, thank you so much for sharing the proxy link. It worked for us here in Canada, don't have to wait until Wednesday. To be honest, I felt like cheating a little bit when doing it but couldn't resist it. OTH, we're so happy with DS's scores. 5 on all 3 subjects: Biology, World History and Cal AB. 3 more APs next year, then he's done.
  18. I'm new here, hope you don't mind me joining in the conversation and brag a little. DS did Math 2, biology and World Histoy, and we are very proud of his results. He got 800 in all 3 subjects. I know his AP classes definitely helped. Now we are nervous about the AP results, but we won't get them until the 9th.
  19. I have been a long time lurker and have benefitted greatly from the posts here. Now my oldest is getting ready to apply for university, I need help and guidance from the hive. Background: We are Canadians. I have loosely follow WTM in the past 8 years or so. As a result, we used mostly US curriculum and DS has taken PSAT, SAT I and IIs, and a number of AP exams. He has done extremely well in all of them and now we want to see what our options are in regard to university applications. Does anyone know if any US university offer merit scholarship for international students? Does anyone have experience in this area? Is there a good website that I can find such information? Any help in this is greatly appreciated! Thank you so much and I look forward to learning from all of you here!
