  2. Okay, my dd is in the same boat. Have you looked at the materials, reading, etc? If you are comfortable with it go for it, if there is frustration try something else. I doubt your littles will really be into listening to the reads-alouds as they are more advanced than the readers. I would suggest getting the SOTW & activity book. The AG has supplemental reading, activities, mapwork, etc. This is what I did with my younger ones and it added very little time or expense. Sorry- I just re-read your post and see that was your plan! Heads up- I really doubt your going to get much positive consensus on this plan. Especially from those of us who have used SL for years.
  3. This thread may help. :001_smile: http://www.welltrainedmind.com/forums/showthread.php?t=118352&highlight=saxon+singapore
  4. Yes, we've done 4-H photography for 3 years now. You can also just purchase the guides. Here is a link I found to some basic photography lessons that I found online: http://www.bestphotolessons.com/index.php?s=content&p=Lesson Here is a link to the 4-H curriculum: http://www.4-hcurriculum.org/
  5. :iagree: With TrixieB on the maturity of Core 6 with a 9 yr. old. My dd was that age when we started, we are now in the middle of Core 7. She is an advanced student and did enjoy most of the books. Also, remember that the LA is tied to the core so writing assignments will be connected to what is being read. There is a recommended expected number of pages by age. You'll definitely have to explain the assignments more and work closely with her on several of them.
  6. Isaiah 54:13 - " And all thy children shall be taught of the Lord; and great shall be the peace of thy children." (KJV) I though of this one immediately. It has always touched me.
  7. My favorite is Lotus Moon, from SMB Essentials, it's natural and smells great. I give myself a facial once a week. But...it's expensive.:tongue_smilie: I started with their sampler kit and it lasted several weeks. Love the pomegranate berry peel and the wild yam masque..oh and the adzuki bean exfoliating powder. It must be time for some more pampering!:D
  8. Well, I won't say my house is spotless, and I just pretend my teenage dd's room is not part of my home by keeping the door shut, but I do like to have everything in its place. Some ideas from our house: - weekly chore chart, let everyone pick their own color. - laminated chore charts in every room - helps them to check off responsibilities - shelving, baskets, containers for organizing in each room- try to go through kids' stuff at least twice a year, be brutal! - decide what kind of schedule you'll keep, we do chores after breakfast and a spiff up in the afternoon before dinner. - keep cleaning supplies readily available so everyone knows where they are. We have a caddy in each bathroom and under the kitchen sink. I've seen some really great getting organized articles lately that list a couple of things to do each day and get your house organized in a short amount of time. Here's a link: http://www.justmommies.com/articles/home-organization-plan.php I'm sure there's more but that's what I can think of right now. Also, try to remember that your family does live there. You aren't like many families who get up, eat, and leave only to return in the evening to eat and sleep. Happy organizing!:D
  9. I don't think most posters mean rules by - "We've sat them down for a lecture and made a chart that sits by the front door". I think it begins with what you wear, and the clothes you buy for them from the time they are little. Light discussions over the years about how we can be perceived if dressed this way, or what clothing is appropriate where lead them to be able to make the right choices when they are older.
  10. It just boggles my mind how people think they have the right to coerce you into schooling your child any other way but the one you have chosen, government entities included! Go with your heart - other than thanking the teacher and possibly the administrator for their service, and informing them of your choice I really don't see what else you need to do. It's none of their business, and the same goes for other family members. Perhaps they'll come around later and maybe they won't, only you know what is best for your child.
  11. I know my daughter said she preferred the book, I do too. But, you did say your ds is computer savvy, so he may prefer the cd.
  12. :iagree: I also expect and count performances, study of music theory, and history. I don't have a problem with giving credit for playing a musical instrument. My kiddos do more than I did to earn a credit in band or choir.
  13. :iagree: I would say check out an online AP course, or create one using the resources online. Here's a link: http://www.hippocampus.org/US%20History;jsessionid=B0F3F14046B4750D841A031A6B3B155D
  14. I agree with the other posters, keep your distance, you and dh decide how you can help without aggravating old wounds. There isn't any reason that your daughter needs to be subjected to such poisoning. I am sorry you have to deal with this - it can be so emotionally draining. I think your desire to try and do something/anything is very benevolent. :grouphug:
  15. I don't have any specific recommendations but I know my dh sponsored part of a team a couple of years ago. We were friends of the boy's parents and they just called any of their friends who owned small businesses. They put the company names in small print all over the back of the shirts. We donated something like $50 or $75. It might be an idea if you have any friends/church members/acquaintances who have their own company.
  16. 6 girls here, all in different stages. We start at birth with our rules, then they aren't really rules. - Nothing sleeveless, tanks are okay if they are being used as a layer - If you raise your arms and expose your belly the shirt is too short - shorts and skirts need to be knee length or longer, mostly we choose capris. - one piece swimsuits, no big openings on front, side, or back most of my girls like to wear them with shorts - dresses should not have a plunging neckline front or back - no undergarments showing - no words across the bum or crazy slogans on the tees - nothing too tight, I hate the poured into them look - pants that aren't lowrise are hard to find, but we avoid the ultra low look. I have noticed that girls tend to wear what their mothers wear, if mom wears tight revealing clothes so do the daughters. You can fit in and not be hanging out all over. I don't get the trend these days of leaving nothing to the imagination, a little TMI going on. I happen to think modesty is very underrated.
  17. :iagree: This is pretty much what we have done too. I have the Artistic Pursuits program but will be using it this year with older students.
  18. I used Saxon with my first dd, we found it too dry and repetitive. But that's a personal opinion, also I don't feel it really stressed the why and how. It felt like rote learning, not that it's always bad, just more personal preference again.:001_smile: With my youngest two I am using RightStart and Singapore together for the same reasons that Siloam posted. I wish I had used the same with one of my older daughters because she struggles with the mental math, the why and how. My middle dc have used Horizons which I do like a lot. It is colorful and has just enough repetition to not be a pain. My only gripe is the lack of real explanation in the TM's sometimes. Right now they are using Singapore and LOF. Probably more info than you wanted!:D
  19. We never have, but then I too am a snob when it comes to how and what my kids are taught. I also just don't have the time.
  20. Love it here too. We like to watch a little and then do it ourselves.
  21. We're taking it slowly and using it with RightStart Math.
  22. Sounds like transverse. My last was like this up until 32 maybe 33 weeks. Thank goodness she got her head down. Sorry no advice. I hope your little one figures it out and makes a move soon.:001_smile:
  23. In Missouri we pay property taxes and personal property taxes (anything licensed that you own besides your home - cars, atv's, boats, motorcycles, farm equipment, trailers, etc).:tongue_smilie: Crazy I know, the first year we moved here our out-of-state accountant called to ask what the large check was written for to our county, he was just blown away. Approximately 80% of both go to the schools here.
  24. Thanks! I just went today and made a killing. I think I managed to restock my birthday/Christmas boxes. They also had some great deals on baby stuff. I got a Britax convertible car seat for $135 not $280!
  25. We walk/bike ride to the park, it's just less than a mile from our house with a big pond/walking trail. The kids play on the equipment and I walk. We also go to a great bike/walking trail not far from us at least once a week, it's 4 miles around the circuit. We are also really enjoying the Wii Fit, sometimes dh and I will go on a run together, the kids like to sit and watch and then they get a turn. Anytime we go somewhere we pack the double jogging stroller and a couple of scooters. With summer here we've enjoyed getting out the baseball and soccer equipment. It will be harder in the fall/winter but I think we will keep it up with the Wii.
