  1. Why not use the resource list (of books, etc) that CC gives for each week? Monday: SOTW chapter/CHOW/Usborne Illustrated Encyclopedia that correlates to weekly history topic Tuesday: Choose a library book from CC resource list and have student summarize it (bookbasket) Wednesday: Mapping activity Thursday: Bookbasket Friday: Fun activity related to topic or... do the Veritas Press history (you can buy the lesson plans or just the teacher manual that correlate to the cards)
  2. Milk is about a dollar / gallon cheaper!!! We go through almost a gallon a day, so this pays for the membership for us! Huge container of organic spinach (around $3) Large container of blueberries (prices vary, but are generally very good) Walnuts (you can freeze extra) Large bags of frozen vegetables Apples Whole grain bread It's always worth looking at books and clothes--there are sometimes great deals!
  3. Sounds like a sinus trigger to me. This is one of my worst triggers. Changes in temperature and storms brings them on for me. Both causes my sinuses to swell and triggers migraines. I've had sinus surgery. My sinus problems are bad. For me, I have to stay on Nasacort twice a day. If a migraine is starting, sometimes I can use Afrin to ward it off... If I'm quick enough it doesn't deteriorate to the full blown naseous, sick all day migraines. Just don't use Afrin for more than three days in a row. It can have a rebound effect.
  4. Thanks! That's exactly what I needed to know. It helps to know the purpose of TWSS. Hopefully, I'll be able to borrow or buy used and re-sell it.
  5. Wait until morning to test. That's when the hormones are most concentrated. I've had good luck with dollar tree tests (and they are cheaper).
  6. I'll have a 3rd grader in the Fall. Would I be wise to start the program then or wait until 4th? She is a very strong reader (she was reading Boxcar Children before K and constantly reads). Her handwriting and spelling skills are grade appropriate (not advanced). What do I REALLY need to get started? It really confuses me. Are the DVD's for the student or the teacher? Any way I can economize this program????
  7. We have the cords, and my guess is that you don't have the audio jacks in your car to do this? I think the easiest route for you might be to buy some decent speakers for your mp3 player...
  8. Time Spies series Boxcar Children Make Your Own Adventure Series A to Z mysteries American Girl
  9. Great ideas! I love the idea of creating encouraging notes to each other. Maybe we could make placemats or bookmarks for each other. The brunch also sounded yummy!
  10. Yes, be careful in mounting them. I was a public school teacher and heard good and bad stories about them. I heard some bad stories about walls being torn down by them (drywall). Cinder block walls did better with them.
  11. Yes, it's been around a long time and has a good reputation.
  12. That's what I thought. Apparently, we were supposed to follow the weblink at the end to focusonthefamily.com to hear the rest of the story. I don't know how effective that is...will most people really go there?
  13. Oh, I should mention I love CLE and will use it for all grades above K!
  14. Here's another recommendation: http://www.amazon.com/dp/1561896799/ref=rdr_ext_sb_ti_sims_1#noop I picked this up at a warehouse club inexpensively ($6.88). I wasn't expecting much, but have found that my 2nd grader loves how it reads.
  15. The beginning is in the schoolhouse rock "Fireworks". You can see it here: http://www.schoolhouserock.tv/Fireworks.html There is a schoolhouse rock with the preamble to the constitution as well: http://www.schoolhouserock.tv/Preamble.html My kids love these!
  16. Someone gave us the Abeka Math K and I think it's great. I've used CLE for 1st and 2nd. I agree that it starts at the beginning, but the speed quickly progresses and by the end of 1st it is more like most 2nd grade math programs. I would either do Abeka Math K (workbook alone is working well here) or the Kumon workbooks that are age appropriate.
  17. My daughter LOVES Little Pilgrim's Progress!
  18. We got an offer for a well running Honda mini-van of $500. We turned it down and got $2500 trade in for a new van elsewhere.
  19. We're using the Dover coloring book and loving it! http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0486401685/ref=pd_lpo_k2_dp_sr_3?pf_rd_p=486539851&pf_rd_s=lpo-top-stripe-1&pf_rd_t=201&pf_rd_i=0486264564&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_r=1P40PD4KB0ZWB81BAWMR
  20. DeVry is well regarded in the computer field. My husband has a bachelor's and a master's degree from there and is very successful in his field (IT Project Management).
  21. I do have student desks (former school desks). You can usually find them inexpensively on craigslist. I paid $5 each for all of mine (bought at different times). I like them, but don't love them because it crowds our space. I prefer sitting at the table and using phonebooks to get them to a better height. How about a height adjustable chair for your child (like a low bar chair)?
  22. If you get the regular stand up quiz board, you can add your own quizzes as well (make your own cards).
  23. We have and love the geosafari laptop and geosafari quiz board (upright)!
