  1. Here is the sentence: Did the wolf huff and puff? My son put 'wolf' in the subject space and drew a compound predicate space. He put 'Did huff' on the top line and 'puff' on the bottom line. Should the bottom line be 'Did puff' or should he only write it once since there is only one 'Did' in the original sentence?
  2. The name Deuce is bad because I've heard guys who are headed to the toilet say, "I'm gonna drop a deuce."
  3. And yes, he did go by that nickname. I know this one to be true because I met the man.
  4. I knew a guy named Richard Head. Think about the old fashioned nickname for Richard and you'll get it.
  5. Thanks! Yes, the floor does give, yet feels plenty solid. It's a quality I really appreciate as it's laid over a concrete slab! It absorbs sound well, and the wood is supposed to have natural oils that repel insects. It's a great floor for people with allergies. So far we have everything on felt pads and we haven't had any scratches. Of course it hasn't even been in a week yet, so we'll have to see how durable it is.
  6. Click on the link to my blog if you want to see it! http://greensummervillian.wordpress.com/2009/12/06/pictures-of-our-new-office/
  7. I had an idea, but I'm not sure if it's a bad one. We're about to install floating wood panels. Would it be a good idea to sprinkle borax over the underlayment before we put the wood on to prevent future insect problems? I'm not sure if they could even get under there, really. My understanding is that it's not unhealthy unless you eat it. Am I wrong about that?
  8. I don't know about Lands End, but I can strongly recommend L.L. Bean's backpacks. I bought mine when I was 12 years old, and I used it very harshly until I graduated. Now my husband uses it every day on his motorcycle ride to work. There is nothing wrong with it. I don't think I would have believed this if I hadn't seen it for myself.
  9. That is just wonderful. You've brought tears to my eyes. Happy birthday to a very special girl and her lucky family.
  10. Wow. I've never seen that commercial. I didn't think I could be shocked by what's on TV anymore. I was wrong.
  11. I'm going to use ** because I'd rather be safe than sorry. Before this thread, I have never used them, and had never thought about the trouble it could cause. This is in response to St. Claire's posts, which I believe she posted with the best of intentions. My problem with giving a child free access to the internet is because I know what is out there. There is a lot of p*rn about women being degraded and abused. Women in p*rn are up for anything with s*xually that will give the man pleasure, but how much of it is about them? I'll admit I haven't done a thorough study of what is out there, but I've seen enough to have a general idea. Real s*x, especially when we're talking about some of a person's first experiences, can be awkward and funny, and it usually needs to be taken slowly. I understand why adults might like the fantasy aspect of it. A young teen who has never experienced the real thing might take what they have learned and go into real s*x with a set of expectations that are unrealistic, leading to discontent and real relationship problems. Also, many women on these sites are bleached, waxed, tanned, and pumped so full of silicone that they're hardly recognizable compared to the vast majority of women. I know for myself as a teen, I always thought fake br*asts were normal and mine had something wrong with them because when I was on my back, they would fall to the sides. Little things like this can make a person very self conscious, so that when they do experience the real thing they're so concerned about doing it "right" that there's not a lot of mental space for just enjoying it. M@sturb@tion and learning about what pleases you is one thing, viewing unrestricted internet sites is another.
  12. It may be an addiction, it may be that she was abused, but I wouldn't jump to conclusions. At that age and younger I was intensely curious and I would certainly have gone to great lengths to be able to see it. I young girl I know took our book of famous works of art into her bedroom so she could study the nudes. Your daughter probably thought she wasn't going to get caught.
  13. We're up. It was a good week. http://greensummervillian.wordpress.com/2009/11/06/weekly-report-17/
  14. I watched it. Joy Behar made it clear that all the work of all those kids would drive her crazy. I think that is probably a pretty popular view in America. I don't think she was over the top about it. She had a panel of three women to discuss this movement. There was no shouting over each other like there is often is on the view. The first was a woman who leaves her fertility to God and is happy about her life. She says she works 20 hours a week, and has homeschooled off and on. She says she and her husband make decisions jointly. The second woman researched and wrote a book about the quiverful movement. She was there to expose the darker side, like the fact that in many quiverful families the girls are not encouraged to get any higher education. The third woman divorced her husband after having seven children with him. I'd like to hear her whole story, but from what I gather her husband was abusive, and her religious beliefs told her that leaving was not an option. She finally woke up when her daughter tried to commit suicide. I think overall they were trying to say that the patriarchal views commonly held in the quiverful movement leave too much room for the abuse of power. The woman who is on the pro side says it doesn't have to be that way.

  16. Yes. She was physically, but more so verbally abusive. When she found out her thyroid levels were off and got medicated for that and depression she became a new person who never abused again.
  17. Too funny! When I was in 4th grade in 1998 our teacher used to turn out the lights before lunch and we would pray and say a drawn out "Ahhh-men" at the end. I had never been exposed to prayer or any religious type stuff. I thought she was saying "Almond."
  18. Anne, did the baby die? I wish I hadn't watched that clip with the aunt. I feel sick. I'm too sensitive about people I don't even know.
