SOTW 1 AG - model Nile flood and other ?s
greensummervillian replied to amiechoke's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
We did it. It was a little tricky, but it worked. I'd recommend it because the kids loved it and they really got the lesson. -
Kim, thanks for the suggestion to use easy classical. I thought I was going to go with NOEO again, but I may have to reconsider. :)
-
We're almost done with NOEO chemistry 2, and I plan to buy physics 2 next. I used it with my 4th and 2nd graders. Some of it was over my 2nd grader's head, but a surprising amount was not. She's not academically advanced either. My 4th grader is, which is why we went with level 2. NOEO is easy to use, and not too overwhelming, IMO.

How is your garden coming along?
greensummervillian replied to runninmommy's topic in General Education Discussion Board
Well, I have a picture of my garden near Charleston, SC. I have tomatoes, peppers, cantaloupe, peas, beans, and various herbs. The spinach and swiss chard didn't make it, but everything else is thriving. http://greensummervillian.wordpress.com/2009/05/15/3458/#comments -
Spin off from "teary eyes when reading"
greensummervillian replied to Only me's topic in General Education Discussion Board
I cry more easily as I get older too. I feel like after the death of my father, the birth of my children and many others close to me, being old enough to see children growing up and changing, reading more books and feeling more connected with the whole of human experience, I am now a richer person who can more fully see how sweet life is and appreciate things more than I did when I was younger. So for me, it comes out in more tears. -
Teary Eyes and Read Alouds
greensummervillian replied to JessMcG's topic in General Education Discussion Board
My eyes are damp just reading this thread! Yes, I cry for read alouds. I remember when my fourth grade teacher read "Where the Red Fern Grows" to our class she had to stop reading because of her tears. I also remember putting my head down and trying not to be too obvious about my crying, but when I looked up I saw that I was not the only one. That is a positive, warm memory for me. -
I've found my sisterhood here! I had never really put all the things that bother me together, but yes, I think I might have mild sensory issues. My SIL sells jewelry. She used to call my husband all the time to let him know about great deals they were having on a piece of jewelry in case he wanted to get them for me. I think she still doesn't understand why I don't like jewelry. I've never been able to explain it other than to say it bothers me and I can feel it sitting there all the time. The worst, in my opinion, is sunglasses. They make me want to claw my face off! I'm glad I have perfect vision, but if it ever starts to go bad I'm pretty sure I'll have to wear contacts.

Thank you for taking the time to explain that to us. I personally don't know any Muslims, and my knowledge is limited to the very basics, so this was very informative for me. I had no idea the Aramaic and Arabic words for God were so close. I did know Muslims considered Jesus a good teacher, but I didn't know they expect him to come as a Messiah or that you consider his birth to be an Immaculate conception. The more I learn about all religions, the more amazed I am by the similarities.

And I don't know the answer. We haven't been able to find it either. When table salt (NaCl) dissolves in water, it is caused by the positive and negatively charged water molecules pulling apart the sodium and chloride ions. So if the salt comes apart, and sodium and chloride are poisons on their own, how does salt water not become poison water? It still tastes salty, so it retains the properties of salt, yet the salt molecule has pulled itself apart. Is there something we are misunderstanding about this? Please help if you know the answer!

You Tube outrage! Anyone!
greensummervillian replied to texascamps's topic in General Education Discussion Board
Good point about it not being a site for children. I think my strong reaction came from my being disturbed by it. I don't like scary previews on TV either because I'm really overly sensitive about scary movies. They make me scared of the dark. -
You Tube outrage! Anyone!
greensummervillian replied to texascamps's topic in General Education Discussion Board
I had to check it out. I thought you meant sexually graphic. That is disturbing and scary. This is what I found for contact info. YouTube, LLC 901 Cherry Ave. San Bruno, CA 94066 USA Phone: +1 650-253-0000 Fax: +1 650-253-0001 I tried calling, and it says my call cannot be completed as dialed. Has anyone else tried? -
This Barbie is for the Birds!!!
greensummervillian replied to Peek a Boo's topic in General Education Discussion Board
My mom is not a Barbie collector, but she got one of these for herself. She set it in her office, and one day my 7 year old daughter asked if it was a present for her. I think it's kind of cool. On the corner of the package where it lists appropriate age it says 14+. -

SWB's new writing program--a few questions
greensummervillian replied to StaceyL in Canada's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
I just received my copy of the book, and it totally useable without the workbook if you want to find your own copywork. She gives you ideas on what to look for in a passage. For example, in year 4 week 21 is questions. 22 is commands. 23 is prepositions, objects of the preposition, and direct objects. 25 is abbreviations. I don't think we'll strictly follow her advice, but it's something to keep in mind to be sure you're picking a good variety of copywork. My son will also be in 5th grade next year. He has done plenty of history narrations through the years, and he has done the narrations and copywork in FLL, so this is not completely foreign to him. My plan is to start halfway through year 3, and go through it quickly by skipping and combining weeks. If I see there is trouble somewhere we'll slow down and take it from there. HTH -
We are nearly done with Chemistry II. We are a science loving family, and I think we've learned a lot from this course. Even me. In this course the experiments do go well with the reading, and the schedule is logical. Yes, I probably could have scheduled it myself, but it would have been a lot of work to do it as well as NOEO. I've already ordered Physics II. The young scientists club experiments were simple in comparison to the rest of the books. It has worked well for us because the simple experiments are great for my 7 year old. Based on my kids' ages I should have used Chemistry I, but I'm glad we went with the more difficult one.

Prayer request for my family...
greensummervillian replied to Kay in Cal's topic in General Education Discussion Board
I am so sorry. Yes, I will pray for you and your family. I've experienced the loss of a close family member unexpectedly too, and there just aren't words. May God bless you. Julia -
I'm getting in here late, but I did do a report this week. I included some samples of our history work. Julia http://greensummervillian.wordpress.com/2009/02/15/weekly-report-6/

Ours is up too. I included some pictures of NOEO science chemistry 2. But he did get very frustrated and have to retire to his room for a few minutes to calm down.

Denise Austin...opinions?
greensummervillian replied to Trivium Academy's topic in General Education Discussion Board
I can see how you might find her annoying, but I personally like her.
