  1. We are huge K12 fans here, too. To describe their science as thorough is almost an understatement!! I think it is a very rigorous, solid program. I have used it a couple of grade levels behind and still feel it outshines any other program I have looked at. (Well, I only consider secular curriculum, so take that for what it's worth. :)) Have you had access to a demo account yet? With it, you can see the online content of all courses, all grade levels that K12 offers. If you haven't but are interested, let me know and I can set one up for you.
  2. Aw, crap. I just posted on last week's thread. Oops. Anyway, mine is up.
  3. I'm really not sure. I know that the one that I now call microfiber, I would have called terry cloth before having the two side-by-side. The terry cloth one is very rough-feeling and the microfiber one is soft. I don't wet down the actual cover when I use it, I just spray the cleaner (I use the Bruce Hardwood Floor Cleaner that is made for my hardwood floors... my guess is that it would also work fabulously on laminate) and then "mop it up." The cover is fairly wet by the time I'm done, but it never gets so bad that it is too hard to push. I love how shiny my floors get when I use this, so I would say to keep trying to find a "rougher" cover. You will definitely feel the difference when you find the right kind. Good Luck!!:o
  4. Yep, what 3lilreds said. The one that came with my mop was more like terry cloth and it is wonderful. I bought a different brand as a replacement. It is very soft (microfiber, I guess) and it is very hard to use unless it is dry. So I use that one to sweep with, and the terry one to mop with. The terry one was from a Bruce Hardwood Floor cleaning kit from Lowes.

  6. My dd is the same way. She loves the Usborne-type encyclopedias, but has little interest in historical fiction (for informational purposes.) She has stated that she wants a straightforward factual methodology. I don't think she would pick out the details like you mentioned either. I am very attracted to a literature-based approach, but it wouldn't serve its purpose here. She may read and enjoy them, but not likely learn much from them - at least not like she does with the encyclopedias. :o
  7. So far we have seen them in her yard and in her house. They seem to fall every five minutes or so. :D Fun!
  8. Thanks for mentioning this. Dd hasn't played in a couple of weeks, so we didn't know about it!
  9. Dead Man. Very weird movie, but I LOVED that one! I also really really liked The Man Who Cried, which is not exactly one that I would normally go for, but the combination of Depp and Christina Ricci just melts me. They had better chemistry in that one than they did in Sleepy Hollow, although I don't know that I have liked a Johnny character more than him as Ichabod Crane. Too funny.
  10. But remember, being dead on the island doesn't mean you're off the show! Some of the actors have been on the show more since their character died than when they were alive!:D
  11. We don't drive much, but we are heating less due to the cost of propane. I am regularly cold in my house, yet we still go through $72 worth of propane each week. It is totally insane! We bought space heaters for our rooms at night so that the heat runs less. We keep them in the school room and at dh's desk during the day so we can keep the thermostat lower. Of course, this caused our electric bill to increase by 50%(!!) but that is still less than the gas we would have used. It is absolutely crazy. We moved to this town because the housing was so much less than where we rented before, but golly! Our utilities were about $200 a month cheaper there! And we kept warm! Without the layers and layers of clothes we wear here.
  12. Thank you for saying this. I know that the first thing one thinks of when you have a dream like that is that the parent must be awful. My daughter feels just terrible after these dreams, and she doesn't understand why she has them. She is trying to learn to do as you do with controlling the dream once in it. She and I both are very lucid dreamers, in color (can't imagine dreaming in b&w) and often. I have that college dream about realizing I registered for more classes too late. I also have a recurring dream that actually happened in real life once. I used to do sound and lighting for bands at a nightclub. There was a house band that played there six nights a week, and a few of the members were pranksters. Well, one night, the sound guy and I were outside during a break, and the band decided it was time to start the next set. So they started without us--with no lights or sound other than the stage sound of their instruments! We had to run through the kitchen and up a flight of stairs to get to the sound booth. I have dreams about that often, but I am unable to run. My legs move but I go nowhere, kinda feels like I am running through waist-deep syrup. Or the stairs become endless and I just keep running. Or I am at the club and I think I have the night off, but it is really my night and the band starts and I can't get to the booth.
  13. No doubt!!! AND...perhaps the WORST consequence is the delay of Joss Whedon's new series with Eliza Dushku (Faith from Buffy) called Dollhouse. Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah! He strongly supports the writer's strike. I suppose I do too, but I agree that the TPTB need to pay up and get on with it. Tim Minear (producer for several of Joss's shows) predicts that there won't be a resolution until some time in JUNE!!!!!!!! AAAAAAAAAAAGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  14. It will be eight episodes instead of the expected 16. Those sixteen weren't "in the can", they were only planned for. Meaning there was a meeting between the producers and the network to decide exactly how many more episodes there would be before the end of the series. They decided on 16 episodes per season, three more seasons. Once that was decided, the producers were able to have a better feel for how quickly they needed to move certain aspects of the storyline along. But they were only able to produce the eight episodes before the strike. They claim that they were able to adjust the ending of that eighth episode with a cliffhanger. I suspect quite a bit of new stuff in the first episode. It will be two hours, so even if they did a recap, there would still be an entirely new hour. I think they will be pretty quick in getting some of the cast off the island, since the post-island story has been brought into play with the flash-forward at the end of season 3. I trust the producers completely. I think the whole storyline is going to go into overdrive now that they know exactly how many episodes they have left. Nine days, 10 hours until LOST!!
  15. Okay, here is the website that I got this smiley from: Smileys Click on the one you want and it gives you options for code. I chose forum code.
  16. Then you haven't seen some of Johnny Depp's other movies, have ya? Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas comes to mind... :D
  17. Unfortunately my dd has bad dreams about me like you mention. She actually talked to a therapist about it who said that usually we create "worst case scenarios" in our dreams to work through our real-life fears. For my daughter, the worst case would be that the one person she relies on most in the world would not be there for her, and would not stop the "bad guys." I'm not sure how true that all is, but I like to try to believe that is the case.
  18. I really haven't felt the vibes of the "New Posts" option because I like to have the posts lined up with their thread. What I am finding works well for me with the general board (since it moves SO fast) is that when I enter the forum, I scan the list of threads. The ones that are of interest to me, I right-click the arrow (that takes you to the first new post) and click Open in New Tab. I do that for all the threads with new posts before I read anything. Once I have clicked all the threads I am interested in, I close out the main forum page and read the individual threads in their individual tabs. Keeps everything nice and tidy for me and there isn't all that going back and forth. When I finish reading the thread, I just close that tab and move on to the next one. Before I started doing this, I was getting irritated that when I would return from reading a thread, the one that had been next in line was no longer next in line. It was hard to keep up with. I find this much better.
  19. Well, this is kind of depressing. I thought the only negative to my mouth breathing were the "catching flies" comments. (Not that I have received any of those in years.) I had my adenoids removed at 10, and I guess that seemed to help. My neighbor was an assistant in the surgery and she said they were the largest she had ever seen. It never even occurred to me that it could be causing other problems. What are the dental issues with it? I would really love to actually wake up in the morning feeling this thing people call "refreshed." I'm not sure I have ever felt that way in the morning. Well, keep us informed as you gather more info.
  20. Yay! Thanks for letting us know you have enjoyed it. I read about it back before it was released and added it to my amazon wish list (where it still sits), but I am glad to know it's readable and enjoyable for the younger ages!
  21. Oooooh! I saw that in a catalog and wondered how well it worked. So can you use regular seeds, or must you buy specific ones from the company? Have you grown herbs before the "old-fashioned" way? What would you say is the main advantage of using the aerogarden?
