  1. Since she is Christian I Would *NOT* suggest the His Dark Material books. They are fairly anti-Christian (and anti-Semitic IMO) My ten year old girl loves the Harry Potter books, and the Percy Jackson books.
  2. My daughter says she's seen tons of adds for the new Zhu-Zhu Wii game. It comes with a limited edition "Wild Bunch" pet. She also has seen ads for a Monopoly Wii game, and I've seen ads for the Wii Party game and a few shooting/hunting games.
  3. Thank God I am not the only one. In our case it's an overload of three grandmas, and a very girly aunt who had one boy.
  4. Except for the fact it's not a Full Moon. There are people on this board for whom a Full Moon has major religious significance.
  5. The Latin Centered Curriculum by Andrew Campbell would be my first suggestion.
  6. I'm about quarter time in school. I go three days a week. When I'm at school my mom does the home schooling, when I am not at school I do the home schooling. Often times I sit next to my daughter and do my work while she does hers.
  7. WIC vouchers really helps the food budget. I feed a family of three on $300 a month. Here in the Midwest it doesn't go as far as it did in Californai where fresh produce is priced very low. For example - I do a happy dance about once a year when avacados are less than a dollar each. I've seen horrible rotten ones go for $1.89 each. That is for a conventional avocado, not organic. Lots of us on food stamps live on very little money. I can afford the gas for a trip to the grocery store about twice a month, and that is with all my errands piled together. Many people on food stamps are also disabled so standing to make lots of meals from scratch may not be physically possible. I lived for a year without an oven because it took that long to save up for one. I had a hot plate, a microwave, and a toaster oven. That was it. Most health food stores no longer take food stamps, and the ones that do are normally in big cities. I live in a rural area and my HFS does not take food stamps even though I have asked them to and presented to the committee.
  8. My daughter read this over mt shoulder and started calling out ideas - books board games a game for the Wii (Endless Ocean) dress up clothing building blocks a Webkinz My daughter is ten and enjoys collecting. She liked the Classic Breyers Horses, Silly Bandz, and dolls. Lots and lots of dolls. The Wooden Doll house has been a fave for years, and both building blocks and Lincoln Logs.
  9. I would have problems not laughing my way into an asthma attack. God gave us brains in order to use them, IMO.
  10. I would have just laughed and laughed at the questions.
  11. How many here home school in Montana? We're thinking about moving back there, especially around Polson. How do you keep attendance? Is the state very strict about the hours? TIA!
  12. I'll also step up to the plate and talk about being on food stamps. I can't afford MEAT much less steak or shrimp. My family is mostly vegetarian because beans are inexpensive and I get $300 a month to feed three people. Seems like a large amount until you factor in the fact that I live an hour from Wal-Mart where I *have* to buy my groceries from. Fresh produce is also often out of the question (just today I saw that avocados were "down" to $1.50 each).
  13. My dd was HORRIBLY bullied in her Brownies troop. Part of it came from the fact that she didn't go to public school so she wasn't able to make friends. Try telling the council that you want your daughter to be a member of the Juliette Low troop - it's a group for girls who can't be in a troop. Also ask for a written letter stating that she isn't allowed in the public school troop, then send a copy of the letter to the national office.
  14. Sorry to be late to this little salon on DV, but I only got to hear the song and pay attention to the lyrics today. Can I give an AMEN to this? YES, I totally agree with everything you said. Today I was listening to this on the way back from college where I have been intensely studying poetry. The study reminded me that I like Eminem's poetry and how much it has to say about inner-city reality and the post-modern society we live in now. I bought the album and am very happy to have done so. The over all theme of Recovery (the title of the album) and moving on from different forms of addiction is amazing. As for this song, it's a duet - much like a DV relationship. It takes two to make this dynamic, and the part the abused has often gets ignored and that can make healing harder. People in general focus on the evil the person who does the hitting is, and pity the abused. This can be what makes the healing harder because what do we victims do with the fact we hit back in self-defense? If you look at the video it is the woman who throws the first punch. Is she the victim or the perpetrator? Later on the man in the video punches the woman, so what about him? Was it self defense, or did the woman set the tone since she was the first to act violently? Who says the video is even in chronological order? For me, I praise God that this song has been put out there for people to talk about and view and think over. If one person learns how a DV relationship starts, or hears this and thinks "Oh God, that's me and I need out" then Eminem and Rhianna have done an amazing service. Just one deep conversation and, to me, the drama around the song was all worth it. Count me as another person who was healed by this song. Today I do a dance of joy.
  15. Maybe two to three hours a day, including an hour on the Wii Fit Plus.
  16. Do you read from SoM or do you have your daughter read it to herself? How does she fold in the readings from the Kingfisher book? This is looking like an ideal solution for us :D
  17. My daughter just turned ten and is complaining that SOTW is "boring". Granted, she abuses that word but I am trying to listen to her. Should I kick her up a notch to the Logic Stage history suggestions?
  18. Add me to the list. I have CFIDS Adult-onset Asthma Depression Temporal-Lobe Epilepsy PTSD PCOS Sleep Apnea Social Anxiety
  19. From what I've read it was a realistic description of that year.
  20. Add us to the Doctor Who fans of the board :D My DD is sad that there won't be new episodes until next Spring!
