Encountered my first real opposition to HSing today...
Chika replied to Aloha2U's topic in General Education Discussion Board
*rolling eyes* Sounds like you maintained a great attitude. BTW, some homeschool moms ARE helicopter moms, lol. Some aren't. Same could be said for the moms of public-schooled kiddos. Whether or not one is overprotective (hovering too much) isn't *necessarily* related to their schooling choice (although it can be, of course). -
Pioneer Woman. Do any of you have problems

I have an idea: Have you cleared your cache and deleted your cookies since the upgrade? Or recently? -
Except for the part about dialing a wrong number, I was going to say it was God calling her, lol.

Was the board down for anyone today?
Chika replied to KidsHappen's topic in General Education Discussion Board
Oh, goodness. I read the first 15 of the (what?) 300+ posts in that thread and that was *hilarious*. Well done, Zelda. Well done. -
My son wants an international penpal-any suggestions?
Chika replied to Karie's topic in General Education Discussion Board
You know what I did a couple of times when I was a kid wanting a Penpal (international or otherwise)? I wrote a letter, addressed the envelope to "Any fifth grader in Pick-a-town, Pick-a-country", put appropriate postage on it and sent it on its merry way. When it would get to its destination, I imagine the postal workers there just dropped it off at a school. Eventually I seemed to always get a letter back (if not a bunch from, say, an entire fifth grade!). Worth a try .... -
I can't change my homepage.
Chika replied to Remudamom's topic in General Education Discussion Board
Or *hopefully* solved (remudamom?) .... can anyone tell me how to get an icon off my desktop and into the task bar at the bottom of the page (I use Firefox). I used to have Firefox and Desktop "buttons" in the task bar where the window bars are down at the bottom of the screen (the task bar in between the Start Menu button on the left and the time off to the right), but somehow they got dragged onto my desktop and I can't drag them *back*. It's very irritating. I've tried right clicking things and choosing different options, but so far no success. -
I can't change my homepage.
Chika replied to Remudamom's topic in General Education Discussion Board
In Firefox, go to "Tools" near the top of the screen and then from that drop down menu choose "Options". On the "Main" tab, put the URL you want for your home page in the appropriate box and click Okay. That should do it. In Internet Explorer, it's the same but instead of Options it says "Internet Options" and instead of "Main" for the tab it says "General." -
Just went to see the movie
Chika replied to GreenKitty's topic in General Education Discussion Board
His wife didn't play his on-screen wife in the movie, but they brought his IRL wife in for the kissing scene so it was her he was actually smooching. -
Oh, that's what I want to do, too! Thanks for the idea.

What do you guys think of this...
Chika replied to Alyce's topic in General Education Discussion Board
Good question. You can see from the text I typed out in one of my first posts in this thread that the law was changed in the 70s, so maybe that was taken into account in the change. -

Chika replied to Alyce's topic in General Education Discussion Board
Gosh, sorry, I guess I'm not good at making myself clear. Certainly a certificate can be granted if a US citizen gives birth to a child abroad. Happens all the time when US citizens give birth in countries other than the USA. The children, in these cases, are US citizens. Obama would be too. Now in THIS case, the Plaintiff, who believes Obama was born abroad, is stating that he does not believe that Obama's mother -- according to the law at the time -- was eligible for registering him as a natural born citizen. He doesn't believe she ought to have since the law at that time stated that you had to have lived in the USA for the previous 10 years, with five of those being after the age of 14. She was just 18 when she gave birth to Obama, so she doesn't qualify according to this particular law. ETA: I'm not saying I agree with the suit, or what the man is alleging. I'm just trying to make clear what he's getting at, according to what I have read (the document filed in Pennsylvania). -

I think we need a TEA break. Everyone take a deep breath, back away from the keyboard, go drink some tea and then let's come back refreshed and ready to move on. Si? ;) -

Again, the allegation in the suit that goes along with what I quoted, is that he was born in Kenya, not Hawaii. The form that Obama has produced, according to the suit, is one that can be granted to someone born outside the USA and relatives of Obama have allegedly said he was born in Kenya, not Hawaii. -

Sorry, I remembered it incorrectly. The following is copied from the legal document filed in a Pennsylvanian court (starting after the statement was made that the Plaintiff believes Obama was born in Kenya). I realize this belief -- the Kenyan birth and the Hawaiian registration -- are allegations by the Plaintiff and not something that has been proven. "Obama's father was a Kenyan citizen and Obama's mother a United States citizen who was not old enough and did not reside in the United States long enough to register Obama's birth in Hawaii as a "natural born" citizen. Under the laws in effect between December 24, 1952 and November 14, 1986 (Obama was born in 1961) a child born outside the United States to one citizen parent could acquire "natural born" United States citizenship if the United States citizen parent had been physically present in the United States for ten (10) years prior to the child's birth, five (5) of those years being after the age of 14." So according to this, IF TRUE, Obama should not have been registered as a natural born citizen because she did not meet all these qualifications spelled out in the law (she hadn't lived in the USA for the previous 10 years with five of those being after the age of 14 -- she was just 18 when Obama was born). -

According to the allegations, he wasn't born in Hawaii, but in Kenya to a Kenyan father. His mother returned with him to Hawaii and registered his birth, but since she herself wasn't a US citizen (the law states that you have to have lived in the US for the previous five years, AFTER the age of 14 -- she was just 18 when Obama was born), then he wasn't/isn't either. Also the document that has been produced is one that can be used by both natural born and naturalized citizens (two different categories, the latter of which doesn't qualify for being able to hold the office of president). -
*Whew* I'm betting you feel better getting that out! :001_smile: I have one confession that's been rolling around in my heart/understanding lately, and here goes. Ahem. I'm a pro-choice *and* pro-life Christian. To me, the terms are not mutually exclusive. There I said it. Oh! I just thought of another one. This, too, is big. I go commando 90% of the time. I hate underwear. The truth is so liberating!

Okay, so who's old enough to remember when Jimmy Carter was elected president? I have a question for you because I'm really getting bothered by this whole "The world is going to come to a horrible end if [*that other candidate*] is elected!!" panicky rhetoric that comes around every four years. Is this phenomenon new to this century? Is it something that solely came up starting in 2000 and both times since then? Or does it go back further? Back in the day when Jimmy Carter and Gerald Ford were duking it out, did both sides send doom-and-gloom, life-as-we-know-it-will-end messages out there (or did the voters)? I'm just feeling right now like this is a new trend in politics, but maybe I'm whacked in thinking that. Perhaps the internet fuels it (in fact, of course it does -- now you can send 33 messages a day about how awful Candidate X is to everyone in your address book!). I'm just tired of reading it all -- BOTH ways. [*Off to :chillpill:*]

You can get Omaha Steak Burgers for .36/lb.
Chika replied to Julie in Austin's topic in General Education Discussion Board
I *was* able to put my order through combining the $25 gift code with the free burgers last night ... BUT THEN I got an email just a few minutes ago saying that the fine print says you can't combine offers so the free item wouldn't be sent. So even if you did/do get the deal to go through as described originally, you're not going to get what you hoped for. Bummer, but oh well! -
And this goes both ways ... many are voting for him almost solely because of his race. There is a hilarious video out there of a reporter interviewing people on the street in Harlem -- all but one person said they are voting for Obama. Then when the reporter went into the issues, the respondents showed their (lack of) knowledge concerning these things. They were asked, "Do you support his pro life stance or his wanting to see the war in Iraq through more?" and some replied "Oh, his pro life stance, of course" (or some such thing). They were asked "And are you glad for Obama's choice of Sarah Palin as a running mate?" and the response would come back "Yes, I think she'll be great as a vice president". Blah blah blah. AMAZING! In this case, they are coming across as racist in the opposite way that the word is usually used. Now, I would feel this way if it were *McCain* supporters who were gone after (in fact he did ask the one McCain supporter if he was okay with Joseph Biden being his running mate and of course he was! *eyes rolling*).

I don't get it.

Left over pasta goes where in your house?
Chika replied to battlemaiden's topic in General Education Discussion Board
*Usually* it goes in the fridge to sit for three weeks, untouched. At that point it will be rediscovered, smelled and promptly tossed into the trash. Our refrigerator is just a middleman between us and the trash can. But I'm trying to change my ways -- trying to remember that pasta sitting there because leftover cold pasta does make a great starter for a tasty pasta salad. -
Using all the same words from your question, I will now make a statement: This does not look like fun. LOL! But what do *I* know? I was about to buy Obama steaks for .36 a pound and was trying to figure out how one gets a Palin under their cheekbone.

Add me to this group! I clicked on the thread to come rate it 1 star if it was flaming rhetoric, lol. So, um, instead, thanks for the hamburger tip! :)
