I'm considering doing Sonlight's Core 200 as a Bible credit. (not the literature part - just the history) I also want to recommend Bible Study Fellowship. DD (9th grade) started near the end of this year. We will be doing Matthew next year. (yea!) Her favorite part was the homeletics (a Bible study method) they did during their weekly class. I'm thrilled that she's learning this at such a young age. I have friends whose teens do Community Bible Study and really like it, but I don't know much about how their study (the teens') is structured.

Questions about homeschooling high school in TX
Rhonda in TX replied to ....'s topic in High School and Self-Education Board
I went and looked at Sam Houston State University's requirements. Mainly because they're easy to find. This is what I see. Texas Education Code (TEC) 51.803-51.809 ( State of Texas Uniform Admission Policy) requires that all students meet one of the following college readiness standards in order to be eligible to be considered for admission at a Texas Four-Year Public Institution: Successfully complete the recommended or advanced/distinguished high school program or complete the portion of the program that was available to them; or Successfully complete a curriculum that is equivalent in content and rigor to the recommended or advanced/distinguished high school program at a high school that is exempt from offering such programs; or Satisfy the College Readiness Benchmarks on the SAT or ACT assessment. SAT – 1500 out of 2400 (Verbal + Math + Writing) ACT – 18 English, 21 Reading, 22 Mathematics and 24 Science You only have to meet one of the requirements. As homeschoolers, we can fit that second requirement. I do believe a classical education fits the "rigor" requirement. :) I can't guarantee that every college has this exception, but I wouldn't be surprised to find that they do. As others have said, check with the colleges you're looking at. -
Here's something I didn't know about public school
Rhonda in TX replied to Aspasia's topic in The Chat Board
We had the traffic light when I was in elementary school. This was in the 70's. It never bothered me. A cafeteria full of kids can get really loud. Not being able to talk at all? That's horrible. -
Does anyone else here NOT wear makeup ever?
Rhonda in TX replied to Luanne's topic in The Chat Board
I used to only wear makeup a couple of times a week. Church, going out to dinner, stuff like that. However, I've noticed in the past year or so (I'm 46) that my skin is looking much older. I've decided I want to look better and feel better about my appearance, so a few months ago I started wearing it all the time. I've also spent some time on youtube watching makeup tip videos. About a week ago I went to pick up a prescription. I'm there regularly, so I've gotten to know some of the workers. The lady working that day said, "Your makeup looks really good. You don't usually wear any." So, I know it was noticed in the past. And, I know that I'm doing an okay job with application. :) -
Winners this year?

This is a local class. I'm not sure where you live, but if it's in the Houston area, let me know and I can give you a link. -
OSU German question (about registration)
Rhonda in TX replied to Rhonda in TX's topic in High School and Self-Education Board
Thanks! I won't worry about it for now. -
I took a look at it and I think it fits our needs. Without supplementing, it looks like a half credit course. Does that sound right? If you used it, I'd be interested in hearing your experience, and whether or not you supplemented it. This is a "get it done" subject for him, but I'm not opposed to adding to it if it's not too complicated.

Winners this year?
Rhonda in TX replied to Farmgirl70's topic in High School and Self-Education Board
BJU Biology DVDs. Actually, online, but it's the same as the DVDs. We switched from DIVE at Christmas and I am so glad! There just was not enough instruction in DIVE for my non-science-y kids. DD's outsourced English class. She loves it and I love not having to teach English. Such a relief for me! DS will be taking this same class next year. BJU World History. We switched to TOG, but have switched back. I've decided to stretch BJU's World and American History over 3 years to slow down the pace. The kids are happy with it and so am I. Actually, now that we've got science figured out, it's all going very smoothly. -
I'm considering just selling everything to the local homeschool store. I won't get as much, but I'm really doubting that my stuff will sell online.

I'm pricing some curriculum for resale and I'm just incredulous at the cost of shipping, even media mail. Is it my imagination, or have prices really gone up?

I'm so worried about my dad's health.
Rhonda in TX replied to Rhonda in TX's topic in The Chat Board
Thank you. I really appreciate the prayers. And that's an excellent point about a possible virus. I hope that's true! -
My dad comes from a line of very long-lived people. (His mother died at 96. Her older sister said she would have lived longer if she'd taken care of herself. :) That sister lived to be 105.) We always assumed he would live a very long time as well. He'll be 82 in June. He suffers from a bone marrow disorder that requires regular blood transfusions. He used to be able to go 6 weeks between them. I saw him today and this latest one has only lasted about 3 weeks. He was so absolutely exhausted. Once he gets the transfusion, he'll be fine for a few more weeks, then this will repeat itself. In his doctor's words, it's his "new normal". I just see that he's probably not going to live another 15-20 years like we had hoped. I lost my mom in 2004. I do not want to lose my dad.

When the tidy whities become... the tighty whities.
Rhonda in TX replied to MBM's topic in The Chat Board
I have to do a combination of dieting and exercise. I can get by with just the dieting, but exercise makes it better. I cannot lose if I'm only exercising. I do not ever completely deprive myself. Dessert does factor in there somewhere, in limited amounts. I don't drink, but if I did, I would cut back on that as well. -
DH met me at work, and I'm a nice girl. :) Other friends met in college, some (even the nice ones) at a college bar. There was one students went to for the dancing, even if they didn't drink. Others met at church, but you said that was out. How about through other friends?

Busty women - where to buy a camisole that offers coverage?
Rhonda in TX replied to Wendi's topic in The Chat Board
I have a bra with a built-in camisole top. I only have a black one right now, but I plan on getting a white eventually. I bought it from Soma. Here's a link. -
Question about dual credit hours

I guess the answer would be to check with the college you're applying to. :) -

Is that what you would do as a homeschooler? -
Question about dual credit hours
Rhonda in TX posted a topic in High School and Self-Education Board
I have always assumed (and seen here) that if my child takes a community college class as a high school student, a one semester class would be counted as one high school credit (a year's worth) on their transcript. So, one semester of Biology at cc would be shown on their transcript as equal to a year's credit of Biology. A friend has her son in a special public school that is affiliated with the local community college. The idea is, you can graduate from high school with an associate's degree. As he is ready, he takes college classes. He's a sophomore and currently taking English and history at the college this semester. However, these classes will only count as a half credit on his high school transcript. What's up with that? -
Who can diagnose dysgraphia?
Rhonda in TX replied to Rhonda in TX's topic in The Learning Challenges Board
Thank you for all your input. -
I am weak in English, so I have outsourced DD's high school English courses. She is talking about majoring in English in college. Her outsourced English classes are excellent, but they don't include grammar. Should I supplement with that? We've done some R&S in the past, up through most of book 7. If I were to add it back in, what should we use?
