  1. I've nearly decided on Campbell Reece Biology: Concepts and Connections. I am thinking about purchasing the DIVE downloads, primarily because it would be nice to have tests and quizzes done for me. I don't know how much we would use the lecture material. I understand there is no syllabus for this text, but I think I could make one to correlate easily enough. Questions: What are the tests like? Mainly multiple choice, or are there some that require more explanation from the student? How often is "young earth" addressed? And lastly, did you really feel that DIVE constituted an honors course, considering the amount of material covered and the difficulty of the exams? Is there anyone who has had a child do well on the SAT-2 (or even AP, since the website claims it could be AP level) after using DIVE?
  2. Did you separate out the activities and weight it per the DIVE instructions? Did you use the DIVE grade calculator?
  3. I've been dreading the Apologia Biology book like the plague. It's not the curriculum per se, but the labs that freak me out. First, I just don't have the money to put into a microscope and other lab equipment. While looking for something to help me, I ran across the Dive CDs. I really like the looks of it. The lectures seem advanced and the labs are all on video. If we want to do the labs ourselves when we can get supplies, then we could. Otherwise, we fill out the lab reports with the video. There is also a workbook page to be printed up for each lesson. There are numerous textbooks or the Internet that can be used for required reading. So I've decided to start out with Integrated Physics and Chemistry for 9th. All of the reading is on the Internet. I can get it from Christian Book for $50 with free shipping. Hopefully I can afford it within the next month.
  4. If I'm ordering BJU Chemistry to go along with the DIVE cd's do I need to order the tests and teachers edition from BJU as well? DIVE states there are tests included but I'd like to make sure I have everything we need. Also, can anyone recommend which lab kit works best - HST? Anything else I need to know?
  5. Its new, and not on their website yet, but I am wondering if anybody has used this and if you could share your thoughts on this! Thanks
  6. I am planning on using Science Shepherd Biology for my son next year. I already have the textbook and a couple of the other sources. I am considering using it with DIVE. Can you answer a couple of questions for me about DIVE? 1. Has anyone used DIVE with SS? Or, with other text sources rather than Apologia? 2. Do you need to purchase the lab kit? Have your student's done the labs or just watched them on DIVE? 3. Have your students liked DIVE? Been able to do mostly independently? I can actually help with Bio - just curious... Thanks so much for any feedback!!! :001_smile:
  7. We are going to be using DIVE ICP next year with BJU Physical Science. What BJU books do I need? Do I need just the student book? Or do I need the student book, TE and Activities Manual?
  8. Here's a bit of a spin-off from my other post. Thanks to all who are bearing with me. :001_smile: I'm hoping to get my highschooler prepared to do well on most of the AP and CLEP exams listed below. I'm hoping DIVE can live up to it's claim to do this, if my ds puts in the required effort, of course. Here's a quote from Dr. Shoreman's blog on the topic: CLEP Professor is a test preparation program designed to prepare students for select math and science CLEP and AP exams. CLEP Professor is available for CLEP College Algebra, Precalculus, Calculus, Biology and Chemistry, and AP Calculus (AB Exam), Biology, Chemistry, and Physics (B). If a student completed a High School Math or Science course using DIVE products, they should be able to spend a few more weeks using CLEP Professor and then pass the CLEP or AP Exam. I would love to know if DIVE with CLEP Professor was sufficient in your experience and also if it was NOT. :001_smile: For science, which is my greatest concern at the moment, I'm currently thinking of this schedule with the DIVE CD's and BJU texts where recommended and Saxon Physics. 9th Integrated Physics/Chemistry 10th Biology with AP exam 11th Chemistry with AP exam 12th Physics with AP exam Any and all information and help would be appreciated. Thanks!! ETA: He would not take BOTH CLEP and AP where both are available. I'm not that insane. Probably where there are 2 choices we would go with the AP.
  9. I know Bob Jones Biology (w/ dvd's) is suggested for 10th grade. For those who have used it- do you think a 9th grader who is a good student- would do okay with this? THanks
  10. This is a cross post from the K-8 board: My 9th grader to be did Apologia's physical science in 8th grade. We were planning on doing DIVE's Advanced Biology for 9th grade. After poking around their website, however, I think we will take the highly recommended prerequisite: Integrated chemistry & physics and save Advanced Biology for 10th grade. DIVE recommends the Bob Jones Physical Science text. I've not done a DIVE science but am under the impression that much of the reading can even be done online if you don't have a text. Well, I found a $10 BJU text 3rd edition (not 4th) and am wondering if I should hang on to my Apologia Physical Science. I wouldn't be too reluctant if I had the current edition of BJU. I don't want to wind up on a topic for which we have to scrounge for good info. The copyright is 2000 for BJU so the info should still be pretty current right? I LOVE Apologia but am going to take the handholding that DIVE provides and am wondering if I can unload my Apologia. I still need funds for this fall's books. I don't want to regret selling it. It would be more economical to keep it than to re-buy it or regret it. But if between BJU 3rd edition and the internet articles and the lectures on the CD we'll have all we need then I need to re-home my Apologia. Can someone advise me?
  11. I'm still debating a good substitute for Apologia General and Apologia Physical. How about BJU Physical 9th done over 2 years in 7th and 8th?
  12. Do you need just the BJU student text to read along the Dive schedule? Is there an inexpensive answer key for the BJU chapter review questions? I really don't want to buy the entire homschool kit just for review questions!
  13. OK, I have had every intention of using BJU Physical Science w/DVDs for 9th. I have them on hand and it has been my plan for years. But, now that we are getting closer, I am having second thoughts. BJU science DVDs are so time consuming and my ds is such a slow poke. I don't know if he can handle a 45 min video each day along with his other work. I know that I will be using BJU for Biology and Chemistry, but I'm torn about Physical. I'm wondering if I should use Apologia instead. I'd have to purchase it, which is not cool since I already own BJU, but my middle ds used it and enjoyed it. He and older ds did not like Apologia's Biology (at all) but very much enjoyed the Physical. I recall it not being overly time consuming, the labs being pretty simple and fun. But, it's not BJU. BJU science is much meatier IMHO, and though I know many use Apologia for science, they also use their Physical in 8th. So, I am torn. Any thoughts from the Hive?
  14. I am considering using Dive Science Biology with Apologia. Approximately how long is each video lesson? Also, if you are a previous user, did you like or dislike it?
  15. My ds learns best when he has someone actually TEACHING him, in addition to having a textbook. Can anyone compare/contrast these? I like the idea of DIVE, that I can use any textbook (or none) with the classes. But I've heard that there isn't a lot of explanation???????? Is that true? I like how much explanation there is with BJU, and ds is used to it, but yikes the price LOL. I'm not familiar with RWT much at all...how does it compare with either of these?
  16. I'm going to be using BJU Physical Science next year. We have used BJU DVDs with Space and Earth science this year and have been pleased with them overall. However, they take up a lot of time and they are expensive. I started looking at DIVE Integrated Chemistry and Physics. I like what I see, but I can't seem to get past the idea of one 30 minute (or less) lecture a week. That just does not seem like a lot of instruction time, compared to the BJU DVDs. I'd love to hear opinions on this.
  17. I do not prefer Apologia for elementary Science. I have used BJU Science with my oldest DD since 1st grade (she is now 6th). I have always planned to switch to Apologia beginning in 7th grade, but now I am second guessing myself. Any thoughts on this? I would love to hear any opinions for the upper level Apologia. Thanks for the input. :)
  18. I am always planning ahead!! I think I am going to use BJU Biology next year with some "help" from the DVD's or the DIVE CD. Which is better? Does the DVD program help with the labs as I have heard the DIVE CD does? I would love to hear any opinions on the DVD's and/or the DIVE CD. I have used BJU DVD program before (spanish I) but have never used or seen the DIVE cd's. Thanks.
  19. For those of you who use DIVE Chemistry, which text do you prefer? AND How many of the labs did you actually do in your home? AND Where did you get your supplies? Homesciencetools?
  20. When I looked at at Apologia Physical Science and I was very unhappy with the tone--it comes across as very adversarial to science and scientific method. I also didn't appreciate the "create a strawman and knock it down" methodology--especially when it came to their take on climate change. I'm seriously considering the DIVE CDs and I'm wondering if anyone has seen anything problematic; especially an anti-climate change bias. I'm not ruling out using it if it is generally good except for that, but I'd like to know what I'm getting into so that I can supplement it with other materials. Thanks!
