  1. Thank you all for giving me ideas and information. I am glad to hear the positives about these different programs. And, Carol in CA, I agree with you. Thanks for posting.
  2. What activities do your daughters do which give them an opportunity for leadership and/or character development? I see Civil Air Patrol mentioned often. There's junior ROTC, of which I am clueless. My daughter wants to be involved in a fun activity, but one in which she will be challenged to grow and be given opportunities to learn new things and serve the community. My daughter attended a CAP meeting last night, and she enjoyed it. I wonder about having her go that route. (Not meaning to offend, but I would be scared to have her join the military. I'm assuming most people who do CAP or ROTC are planning on military futures. I also imagine students are encouraged to pursue that.) I would love to hear your experiences with CAP and junior ROTC and other activities/programs in which your daughters have gained leadership experience.
  3. Sparrow, Thank you for sharing this link. I think I will be using it next year with my daughter.
  4. Thanks for the information about store pharmacies. We don't have Publix here, but we do have Meier's. Thanks, abacus2, for the book recommendation.
  5. My husband's weight isn't the issue, and he is physically active through work. His diet HAS been an issue. He has made many positive changes in the last 6 months (dropping soda, eating more vegetables, decreasing grain and starch consumption), but years of unhealthy habits have probably caught up with him. His father has diabetes as well, so perhaps that has contributed as well. I appreciate all your words of wisdom. We will definitely be trying to learn as much as we can about the lifestyle changes he needs to make so that this can be managed well.
  6. Thanks, Jean. Now I'm off to learn more...
  7. Thank you all for answering. Arctic Mama--what are postprandial numbers? I will try to reserve the book you recommended. Thanks!
  8. The doctor prescribed metformin once a day. I am concerned about him starting on a medication that he will then be on for life.
  9. My husband's a1c level is 7.6%. The doctor has prescribed meds. What should we know? Can he not take the meds, yet still manage his glucose efficiently? Please help me know what to ask or to consider for this.
  10. My daughter took Latin I and II and one workshop with Lukeion. All three were excellent.
  11. I hit "reply" accidentally and didn't get to finish my thought. I wanted to say that I didn't have any real helpful advice, but that my daughter's experience matched your daughter's current situation. I can offer a little more information about our experience if you want to inquire via private message.
  12. My daughter did Lukeion Latin 1 in 6th, earning an A+. She took their Latin 2 the next year and had a similar experience as your daughter; she earned a high A first semester, but 2nd semester was very difficult. She earned an A in the course, but we knew Latin 3 would be too difficult for my daughter. She is taking a Latin readings course and Spanish I this year. She has decided that she wants to pursue Spanish to the AP level rather than Latin.
  13. Thanks much! Yes, I agree that $150 is a bargain for an AP class. Sorry to the OP for derailing the thread a little. Now, back to the AP provider recommedations please.
  14. I can't find a price for Edhesive's Computer Science course. Care to share the price and any other information about it?
  15. I couldn't find a specific date on the website for submitting a syllabus for the 2016-2017 school year. The gentleman from College Board told me it was in March; I thought he said March 1, but maybe he just said March generally. Perhaps it is March 15. I am just trying to figure all this out as well, so I don't know whether the second statement is true. What I'm now wondering is if there's a date by which a syllabus has to be approved and a later date by which the materials list has to be provided. I thought everything was submitted at the same time; if so, I think the date in January (mid-school year) is correct. Can anyone else comment on this?
  16. Hi, Michelle. The website says that teachers have until Jan. 31st to submit their list of materials for this school year (2015-2016). I saw that reminder and was confused at first as well, thinking that the deadline for course material submission would have been before the course started and not halfway through the school year. The good news is we have time to figure out what we want to do for next year!
  17. I was having difficulty obtaining access to the AP course audit page as well. Today I called College Board's AP Course Audit customer service number for help. Here's what I did to get access: Once you are registered with AP as a teacher and see the option for "Get Access" to the AP course audit, click on it. You should then see a box with teacher, zip code, and organization appear. Type your state name and the word "home" in the organization field, with a blank space between the two words (no quotation marks). Do not type anything in the other fields. My memory is a bit fuzzy at this point, but I believe when you are typing "state name & home" in the field, you will see options. I believe I clicked "Add" and moved to the next step. If this doesn't work, just move to the next part of these directions. My top option said "Ohio home school: 25 South Front St" (the address is the state's Dept. of Education); I clicked on that and then "Finished." Then the website re-routed to "My CB Professional Account." AP Course Audit Access appeared as the first choice, showing that the process worked. The gentleman helping me through the process reminded me that submissions for courses/syllabi for next year doesn't open until March 1.
  18. My daughter is taking chemistry with Landry Academy this year. She has Mrs. Prieskorn. I can recommend the class highly. Mrs. Prieskorn sends weekly emails to the students to introduce the new week's subject. She focuses on helping her students learn the material. One example of this: she gives the students the opportunity to improve their test scores by fixing the answers on their tests for a percentage of the full amount. To do this, the student has to give not only their answers, but also the proof and work for their answers (proof of an answer can be the page number of the text). She posts solutions to homework problems on the class page for students who need them. She encourages students to read about science in the news. Every week, she highlights two or three recent science articles. The students are not required to read them, but they are given the opportunity to earn a small amount of extra credit if they read and summarize one article per week. My daughter had Mr. Leingang for pre-chemistry a couple of years ago. She enjoyed the class. In fact, she will probably take his forensic anatomy course this fall. I don't have any specifics, though, about his chemistry course. Hope this helps a little. It can be so hard to decide.
  19. I would not talk with the professor. I would just not attend class that day.
  20. I spoke to the athletic director at the public school about this the other day. He said that anyone could be on the team, but they sometimes would have to limit who they could take to certain invitationals. In those instances, the coach would probably take the top 2-3 athletes per event.
  21. Homeschoolmom3, Thanks also for recommending Bluefield. I'm glad your son had a great DE experience.
  22. Thanks for sharing both SFA and Clovis Community College. I remember reading about Clovis on the boards before, but I hadn't heard of SFA.
  23. Would you mind sharing the university? I'm beginning to research online DE providers, and geography is one of the courses that I am hoping my daughter will be able to take her first year.
