  1. UM, if they had told me at the time this was the answer to my PPD, I would have asked to be committed. No offense to anyone, but YUCK!!!!:ack2:
  2. When I came home with my first daughter (1999), my poor husband had already put her placenta in the freezer (pressure from the midwives the night of her birth). He really thought I would want it! We moved into our house a year later with it and it sat in the freezer until my second daughter was born (3 years later, 2002). When we saw the placenta WAITING in the room for me (honestly, they delivered my placenta to the hospital room before ME!), we told them we didn't need another one, we already had one in the freezer. They looked at us like we had grown two heads and insisted that we needed this one too! I tried to get them to take it, but they wouldn't. I asked if I brought back the one I had left with 3 years ago if they would dispose of it, and they said something about hospital codes. So, we had two placentas in the freezer until 2005, when we finally took mercy on my parents and the rest of our family (not to mention our freezer space) and buried them in the back yard under some trees that have since died and never really took anyway so, so much for that myth! Since we live in the desert, we had to bury them DEEP so the Coyotes wouldn't get them. I kept having nightmares that a Coyote would find them, dig them up and eat them. Then, he would come to my door and ask for the child that tasted the best! I was equally afraid to just throw them away. I was worried about ending up on the evening news. So, do hospitals not dispose of Placentas anymore? Is this a conspiracy? Should we make tee shirts that say "I was part of the Placenta conspiracy. Stop the madness!!"?:willy_nilly::willy_nilly::willy_nilly:
  3. YEAH! I actually got to bed by midnight! I couldn't believe it when the women's gymnastics didn't start until 10:00!!!! And, while I was disappointed we didn't win the gold, silver is nothing to cry about!:crying: Did anyone watch Craig Ferguson after the Olympics (CBS). He was hilarious. OK maybe I can make my pot of coffee now:w00t:
  4. Am I the only one staying up WAAAYYYYY too late (1:00/2:00 am) to watch the Olympics. I can't even function this morning, but I can't help it! It's so exciting :hurray: The only thing bugging me is, I thought when it said LIVE it really was live, but then I was talking with my friend in Oregon on the phone last night, and she was an hour behind us in events! She watched Michael Phelps and the relay team win the gold "LIVE" an hour after I did?!!? Can someone explain this to me?
  5. I second Homeschoolclassifieds.com. If they don't have what you're looking for, you can post a Want to Buy. Dorinda
  6. I subscribe to enchanted learning as well as I think they're a good balance. We stopped Enchanted Learning for a year, but since we're studying biology again, it was essential for the labeling worksheets. Edhelper is cool because you can create your own worksheets (ie crossword puzzles using your spelling words; extra math practice using what you're working on in math; etc). Both are well worth the $20 Blessings! Dorinda
  7. I was totally surprised when I realized that A Beka is what I've used the longest. I haven't used the whole curriculum since Kindergarten with my oldest, but I use something from it every year. I really like their "Handbook for Reading," and their "Blend Book," as well as all their pre-school and K workbooks. Rod and Staff would have been my second longest at 4 years. We aren't using any RS this year, we're using A Beka's Language 3 workbook and PLL. My youngest is using A Beka's art projects and "Handbook for Reading," but we are going with ETC for phonics.
  8. I just posted an update on the other board about our house, and I forgot another praise! My husband is currently employed (sorry for the confusion), but his contract was due to be up in October. We found out last week that it had been extended another year. So now he has a job until October of '09. We are still going to sell our house and we really believe the Lord is taking us out of state, but it is a relief to have the security of employment while we wait on Him! Praise God! Here's the update I posted on the other boards: YEAH! We had two showings this week too! The first one was Thursday. The girls and I were TOTALLY caught off guard. It was 2:00 in the afternoon and we had just finished school. I mean closed the books and gotten up from the table when the phone rang. NOTHING was clean and we were out of breath by the time we left the house. luckily, we had 30 min to get out. Then, yesterday, we're sitting around, watching the Olympics in our lounge around clothes, and the phone rings. We were a little better off, but we had 5 min to get out of the house so the dishes got piled in the sink. I'm not used to doing the dishes right after we eat No feedback on yesterday's showing, but Thursday's has a 4 year old Bankruptcy so our Realtor sent them to a lender to see what they qualify for. You never know, they could have an incredible down payment, or someone willing to co-sign! YEAH GOD! Blessings! Dorinda Thanks for all your prayers! They are obviously working:grouphug: Dorinda

  10. If anyone has used the accompanying curriculum guide, how long was it (meaning, how many weeks)? I can't find any samples online and I'm thinking about ordering it. Thanks! Dorinda
  11. So, obviously I have an unusual name and was the subject of ridicule both as a child and an adult. The funny thing is, I LOVE my name, and I would just get mad and feel sorry for the people who insisted on giving me nick names. I hate nick names as a result (for me). I have this theory, if someone meets me and asks if I have a nick name I'd rather go by, then they are not worth my time. If I had a name I'd rather go by, I would have told you, right?!?!?! Enough with my rant. Fast forward to my children. My husband wanted to name our first son Zebulon - God took care of that, we never had a son :) I thought about naming our first daughter Moon - and then I came to my senses which is hard when you're pregnant. Especially since I was going to give her my middle name Rhea (pronounced Ray in my family). Gotta LOVE those hormones! My second daughter came along and I wanted to name her after my grandma, Norma. My husband fought that for several months. Finally he asked what her middle name is. When I said Edith he told me to give up :) As it is, we gave both our daughters what we thought were, "normal," beautiful names. However, we liked the alternative spellings and so they are plagued with no one ever getting them right. Aimee and Gillian (Gill-pronounced Jill). It totally bugs my mom that she's called Gill because it doesn't "look right." I don't think it's that big a deal. At least they're not number 16 bus stop!!!!:smilielol5: Dorinda
  12. We would also covet prayers in the sale of our home. We are not desperate yet, however we will be after the first of the year. We had listed with one realtor and it was a HORRIBLE disaster. We fired him and relisted on the first of July. We have not had a single showing. We're chalking it up to the weather and the time of year, but it sure would be nice to have at least ONE! Anyway, we are selling our home before my husband loses his job and in preparation of our eventual move to wherever he finds a job. He's been looking for almost a year, and has had a couple of offers, but no one is willing to pay moving costs and we can't afford a mortgage and an apartment on the pay people are offering. Bottom line - the house needs to go so we can move on, or, so when he's out of a job, we don't have to forclose. Thanks for the prayers! I'll be praying for all of you! Dorinda
  13. What year/volume do you have? I haven't found any spelling errors:confused: Usually, this kind of thing bothers me too, so I would think I would have found them by now. Have you thought about joining the Yahoo group to get more of your questions answered about the curriculum? It is definitely a think outside the box curriculum. As a matter of fact, I'm a little overwhelmed this year. I can't decide which units to study:willy_nilly::willy_nilly: Let me know where you found them. Dorinda
  14. Are you using the online co-op? I use Konos and have never heard of the Mentor tapes? I don't use the online co-op, but I hear it's really great. You can join the yahoo group to get more information. Dorinda
  15. Have you looked at "Cantering the Country?" You could go as in depth or as light as you want with that. It's not that expensive either. Blessings!
  16. My daughter is CONSTANTLY doing Art. We love "Artistic Pursuits." http://www.artisticpursuits.com Check it out. It requires little to no teaching on your part, and my kids love it!
  17. We used HST for a year, and then bought the plus program. We lost nothing, and it was virtually seamless. I think it's a great deal to try it for a year or more before having to pay, and then to have free updates. I was looking at another program at convention this year (only because it accommodates unit studies). If I had purchased it for $50-$60, I still would have had to purchase updates each year for $25!!!! HSTplus gives you unlimited updates for life! Do you have dial up? Maybe that's the problem? Katie should be able to help you, go to the forums and she'll answer pretty quick. HTH!
  18. I guess the reason why I don't consider them matching TWTM, is they don't have the Omnibus 4-6 done. I also think it's hard to start a program not knowing when it's going to end. Maybe I just need to "think outside the box." Yes, my bad joke pun was intended:001_rolleyes: Blessings!
  19. It's funny when threads get revived. I was looking at Sonlight, but my daughter, being the hands-on learner that she is, LOVES Konos (not a boxed curriculum). So we're doing that and adding our own classical spin to it. But, Winter's Promise is another one I seriously considered. I really liked the books and the activities involved, but since Konos was what was loaned to us and it works fine, we're sticking with that.
  20. We think it's enough:thumbup1: We love art so we have a lot of art books laying around. But I haven't felt the need to add to it formally. Blessings!
  21. What's the name of the Scholastic book? We have the book fair coming up in two weeks :) Thanks!
  22. Paula's right, most of the programs (including MOH and Veritas) just spend the whole first month or two on the OT. Have you looked into buying the VP OT/AE cards to go along with SOTW? That might be a good help. Or even purchasing "The Victor Journey Through the Bible." We love this book and you could read a page/section a day until you get to Abraham. Blessings!
  23. I haven't used Harvey or CW, but I used Rod and Staff and we found it extremely dry and boring. So, you're not missing anything there :) I've looked into GUM and A Beka's Language workbook. I don't know how "religious" A Beka's is (Their LA workbooks aren't as "in your face" as R&S), but it seems colorful and easy to use. Also, you wouldn't need a teacher's guide to teach it. GUM is from Zaner Bloser. It's totally secular and I don't know if you'd need the teacher's guide, but they have it if you want some guidance. HTH!
  24. In New Mexico we file a notice of intent to Homeschool by April 1st, or within 30 days of starting a homeschool. We're supposed to keep immunization records, a calendar showing 180 days of instruction, and our High School diplomas on file. No one ever comes by so I don't know how many do this.;) It's easy for me because we can file on line, but I know people who hate that. We're probably moving in the next year or two (hubby's job), and it's always interesting to me to hear people say, "Oh, it's not that bad. We only . . ." Especially people who have to test their kids! That sends me into cold sweats!:willy_nilly: It just goes to show other "more regulated" states may not be as bad as they seem.
