  1. Freezer Assets (or may be called Frozen Assets) Once A Month Cooking I will wait and when chicken goes on sale. Buy a lot and cook all day. I end up with about 12 - 16 dishes which I use over a 2 month period. I do the same with gr. beef, etc. My goal is to have about 3 meals a week for 2 possibly 3 months. Save them for busy nights, AWANA night, small group and after church!
  2. You know best for your children. So follow your instinct. We have a great Christian school near us. HS is very riguorous and class sizes very small. I hope to send my ds's there for highschool. For me, there are benefits of going to to good private or public school for high school. I want them to experience a classroom environment with academic competition. I want them to follow a schedule and have multiple teachers. I want them to have to stand up for what they believe in before I send them off to college. I want them to have to experience the "real world" before I send them off into it. And, to see that not everything is fair and just. I do love homeschooling elementary school. I get the chance to lay down a great foundation. And, I can tailor our schedule and curriculum for them. But, that's not how life goes and so we won't be homeschooling for highschool.
  3. Seconds are available right now through R&S. I believe the blacklines cost $4.88.
  4. My ds 7 is in first grade (he turned 7 the end of May). This is very common were we live since the cut off date is Aug 1 and some school districts is July 1. I would say the majority of late spring/summer bdays we know all start K at 6. I know more people who regretted pushing ahead then slowing down!
  5. 2nd grade math covers addition facts through 18. 3rd grade math starts multiplication - but does start with review of 2nd grade math. We use a grade ahead with R&S. You can go and see the contents at http://www.rodandstaffbooks.com/list/Rod_and_Staff_Curriculum/
  6. I added baby food sweet potatoes to any of his marinara or pizza sauce - 1 jar per meal. I did this for a long time! I then shredded summer squash or zucchini and would hide that under sauce or cheese. With the shredded veg. needed to start sparingly and work up to a real serving size. Good Luck!
  7. The hs my children would end up going to is excellent. They have chem major's teaching chemistry, math major's teaching math, etc. And the teacher's I've met really love to teach and inspire children. Also, the school has a strict dress code which I find refreshing in hs. So, I think we'll end up sending our children to ps for hs, but not before.
  8. Help! I'm applying for a part-time job after years of not working. I'm stuck on the question about my weaknesses? I know I have some just don't remember which one's are truly frowned at or a better way off writing a weakness. Any suggestions?
  9. My ds seems to be slow on the worksheets also. I have discovered he likes to beat his time. So, we started out with completing the worksheets in 45 minutes and now are down to 30. He would like to do them in 20 min by Christmas. Before we got it down to 30 minutes we did 2 before reading and and 2 after reading. This seemed to help also. ~ Amy
  10. I saw the 1st and 2nd planes hit and frantically called my mom several states away who didn't know what we going on. We were on the phone for a couple hours! My husband, a pilot, was headed to NYC but diverted to Detroit. He heard the towers in DC try to reach the pilots of the plane that went into the pentagon and no answer. An emergeny protocol built into the system was used that morning and had never been used before. All the pilots in the air that morning had no idea what was happening until after they were allowed to land and deboard.
  11. I bought the blacklines for 1st grade and we only occasionally used them. I think there is enough practice and review in the workbooks. Just my 2 cents! Amy
  12. This link will take you to a great site. It has books listed by grade level starting with 1st month of 1st grade and goes through 7th grade. Hope this helps! http://home.comcast.net/~ngiansante/ ~ Amy
  13. I purchased the blacklines for 1st grade. I don't deem them necessary unless you feel your child needs more practice. My son loves worksheets. I use the blacklines for "quizzes" and "tests". Perhaps you can buy them used?
  14. My ds will be 19 and 1 month when he graduates. I graduated 17 years ago and with a May bday and was one of the youngest in my class. All the boys that had May - Aug bday's were a year older than me. Our school district has a July 1 cut off. I've noticed my son's do so much better once they turn 6.
  15. My ds had difficulty with math also. I would recommend slowly going through the review of Grade 2. Do 1 page a day and do a majority of math with flashcards. I found my ds need to actually write the entire math fact - 10 - 6 =4 over and over rather than seeing it. Just how he learns. We did finally get addition down pat. Subtraction 1 - 10 is down and we are working on the rest. Keep perservering! :001_smile: Amy
  16. We will be starting R&S Math 2 in a few weeks and I was about to order. I just wanted to know if anyone has taught R&S without the TM and it worked. Or do I really need this to guide us throught the units? Thanks!

  18. We love this dish in our house. It is either a side or a main course at lunch. I serve with fresh tomatoes on the side, fruit, etc. Chickpeas & Carrots 1 can chickpeas (garbanzo beans) drained & rinsed 1 onion, chopped 3 - 4 carrots, peeled and sliced 2 celery stalks, thinly sliced italian seasoning pepper olive oil or cooking spray saute onions and then add carrots and celery. cook until they are the way you prefer - we like a little crunchy so about 10 minutes. add chickpeas & seasoning and simmer 5 - 10 minutes serve warm
  19. My ds at 6 had no interest and would always say he just couldn't read. We took our time and did Rod & Staff Unit 1 for reading and phonics. It really - really helped in. Starts off so slow and gradually builds up. I knew he was learning when he got on the phone with Grandma and began telling her what sounds letters makes, etc. and he had never even talked to me about it! I'd try the Unit 1 reader for 1st grade. The workbooks really helped my ds read more without him even realizing it. ~ Amy
  20. Thanks for the note. So far first grade is going great. My ds is really enjoying school and learning a lot. I hope to start my soon to be 4 ds in "preschool" a couple times a week. Nothing much just probably 30 minutes to work on the basics. ~ Amy http://mountainviewacademy.blogspot.com/
  21. Thanks everyone. I think I may look for a used set. Could be good to use over our longer breaks just for refresher work. ~ Amy
  22. I see that each math lesson has 4 pages of math work. The blacklines are optional, and I'm wondering if that would just be too much. Has anyone used the blacklines for 2nd grade? And did they cover more material than in the workbook? ~Amy DS - 7 - my eager beaver DS - 4 - my little tornado
  23. We started 1st grade 4 weeks ago and have made incredible progress with reading. He was a very reluctant reader in K. He enjoys the phrase cards and the workbooks really, really help him. After 4 weeks, he is now reading the workbooks all on his own and takes pride in completing his work independently. (I do have him read aloud - really helps him focus) The reader unit 1 starts off very slow and I thought he'd be bored, but he likes it and is making great strides. I've introduced some first readers, etc and he has much more confidence reading them. I would highly recommend the program.
