  1. I read the lesson aloud and we discuss the questions. It has led to some really interesting conversations.
  2. I borrowed LFC A from a friend, and really disliked it. It seemed, like others have mentioned, that it threw out so much new material every week without application. We went with Lively Latin, and really enjoyed it.
  3. I tried it with my grade 4 and 5 sons last year while we were studying ancient history. It was a flop for them, most likely because they hate map work, and anything pertaining to maps and geography. :glare: They love drawing, but as soon as it mentioned a river or mountain range they were less than thrilled. I love it though, and I will try to implement it again this year. I even set aside a special block of time once a week for it. :D
  4. :iagree: my kids love Mark Kistler. They enjoy his humor and I have been really impressed with what they have learned.
  5. Which books specifically did you use with your Kindergarteners? I am looking into Abeka cursive for my 4 year old when she shows signs of being ready.
  6. My 4 year old loves MEP on the iPad!
  7. VP self-paced History AOPS pre-algebra Elementary Greek VP lit. w/ guides The Art of Argument Bible Study Guide for All Ages :hurray: Wow, we have a lot of new stuff this year! Too bad my children don't share my excitement. :glare:
  8. It is 103 degrees out, and two of our chickens decided to climb into the SAME nesting box to lay. (one cubic foot in size) Mind you, there is another nesting box sitting empty. They are both panting like crazy and looking miserable. I opened the top and stuck a couple frozen water bottles in there with them. Hopefully they will finish their business quickly.
  9. My thermometer says 103, and I am exhausted from going in and out all day trying to keep our chickens cool. We scrapped our plans and the boys have been in the basement playing Legos. The princess is watching TV while I work on our fall school schedule. That kind of counts, right? :D
  10. We love the Families of the World DVDs too! Also, we have the Geo Puzzles for each country, and like the 10 days in... Games.
  11. Which subjects do you feel must get done every day, and which do you do a few times a week or alternate with other subjects?
  12. We have the Brother HL-2270DW. It sees a lot of heavy use ( I print two copies of Math Mammoth every year, and three of Lively Latin, and much more!) and has never had a problem. I bought it based on reviews here and on amazon.
  13. We have just started using this a few weeks ago. So far I would recommend getting a Periodic Table wall chart, and my guys really like The Elements book by Theodore Gray.
  14. Didn't see one yet... I did mine yesterday since we are off today. Link below:
  15. :iagree: DH is outside now putting up an electric fence around our chicken coop. They are horrible around here. Every morning we see 'evidence' of them all over the yard where the kids play. If the fence doesn't keep them away, we will have to take more drastic measures. They have not found a way into the coop yet, but I fear it is imminent. Of course, they probably wouldn't be so thick around here if one of our neighbors would STOP FEEDING THEM!!!! Raccoons, like any wildlife, are not pets, and should not be fed. Rant over. :D
  16. :grouphug: oh mama, you have many more years before she goes off to college. Just enjoy her every day, and don't worry about tomorrow. :grouphug:
  17. :iagree: we have been studying Latin for three years and are adding Greek this fall. I do think it is really important to teach modern languages, although I agree that to be taught successfully, a student needs to have a lot of contact with a native speaker. I think the importance of Latin and Greek is to aid in grammar, vocab, and thinking skills, not to mention forming a connection to the past. In a few years when we are ready to begin a modern foreign language, I will try to find a tutor and/ or immersion program.
  18. We recycled our old Avery binders. The man checking us out said we could only recycle if we were purchasing Avery brand binders, not Better Binders as it was an Avery sponsored event. Fortunately, he was very pro-homeschooling, so gave us the discount on the Better Binders anyway. :) It sounds like some people here had no problems though, so maybe call ahead and ask?
  19. Gah! We just bought a pack of 72 yesterday. :scared: they are going straight into the trash. I even bought a pack of the 'my first' pencils for my daughter. She will not be happy when they turn up missing. ;)
  20. :iagree: I do the same with my 10 year old son. SWB talked about doing this in one of her lectures. My DS will sometimes start to read the directions aloud to me, then stop and say, "never mind, I get it now."
  21. That has been on my wish list for awhile, I will have to have a closer look. Thank you! Any other ideas?
