  1. I just pulled out my third grade materials to check for you. The student manual is non-consumable. However, you would need a separate student workbook for each child.
  2. If you message me with your e-mail, I could try to forward the e-mail to you. It contains the link for the free 30 day trial.
  3. I recieved the free 30 day trial offer in an e-mail from 'The Old Schoolhouse'.
  4. I have never opened the teacher's guide, the lessons are very self-explanatory for the students. All directions are clearly stated for the student to read and understand. I believe both third grade books are necessary, but we haven't used the third grade level yet. I ordered both 2nd and 3rd, and after looking them over decided to combine my guys and use 2nd grade materials for both.
  5. We are taking advantage of the free 30 day trial and I'm having mixed feelings about the program. My son loves working on the computer, he loves the material and the pie chart that shows his progress. However, it seems he is presented with so much new information every lesson, compared to how much review is assigned. I am just wondering how well he is going to retain the information. Has anyone used this curriculum for an extended period of time and care to share your experience? Thanks!
  6. My 2nd and 3rd grader have been enjoying Growing With Grammar. It is a nice balance of new material and review. They have learned and retained a lot this year.
  7. I have 6 drawers for each child, one drawer for each of the following: Math workbook, Grammar workbook, writing notebook, Geography workbook, history binder/science binder (these alternate), and art project/music instrument-recorder (also alternate). I use Sterlite 3-drawer mini organizers. Each drawer is appox 8 1/2 by 11 inches. I found them at T*rget for around $8.00 each.
  8. I just started one today, link in my siggy.
  9. I'm facing the same challenge. My DD is 17 mos and we will start school next week. I plan on getting her her own set of workboxes as well. What I found she really liked last school year was 'Lauri' crepe puzzles. She loves the peg board one where she can move pegs around. She also really likes some little plastic animals I found. I give her a little container of water and tell her to give them a bath. That'll last at least 10 minutes. Another thing she enjoys is bubbles from the sink. I fill up a bowl w/ soapy water and skim off the bubbles. I plop them onto her high chair tray and she scoops them and splats them. As a last resort, I keep a bag of mini m&ms and give her a few in a little container. I'm hoping she'll play more independantly this school year, but it's kind of a 'hope for the best, expect the worst' scenario. :D
  10. Thanks for the links and advice! My sons are 7 and 8. They went through an 'outer space phase' a few years back and we did a lot of reading and learning constellations. Last summer we took a star chart outside at night and identified what we could. I'm just looking for what would be a next step up from the naked eye--not something too expensive. Thanks again!
  11. We're doing astronomy this year and I'd like to get something to aid us in our studies. What's good?
  12. We have had a lot of problems with our gateway--never again! My sons share an HP and that thing is still going strong even after all the abuse it has suffered. It gets overheated really easy though, and will shut down on them in the middle of something. DH has a Dell for school and says it's the only brand he'll buy from now on.
  13. I haven't heard about charcoal, but we swear by acidopholus for upset tummys.
  14. I have another perspective to share. I was an extremely shy child when I started kindergarten. I wouldn't say a word to anyone at school, teacher or kids. They put me in a special class for kids with learning disabilities. It was a small group that met once a week. After many months in that class I started to speak a little and they realized I could read fluently! I have many bad memories of elelmentary school--teachers punishing me for not answering them or volunteering information. It took along time until I started to feel comfortable in a classroom setting, seventh or eighth grade. I was happier through high school because I had two close friends who were also pretty introverted. I never joined any sports or music groups which I regret to this day. When my oldest son showed signs of extreme shyness around age 4, I told DH we were going to homeschool him because there was no way on God's green earth I was going to subject him to what I had been through. He's now 8 years old, and a very happy, bright boy. He still prefers small groups, and won't say a lot in a large group settings like Sunday School or large family get togethers. To tell you the truth, I don't care if he spends his life avoiding large group situations. There are many well adjusted, successful people who do just that. I'm just happy that he is a secure, happy little guy who loves to learn and experience new things.
  15. I've struggled with this same question. I've decided to delay another year until my boys are in 3rd and 4th grades. We really need to focus on grammar and spelling this year so it should come easier to them next year.
  16. I agree with the signing. We started signing w/ my DD when she was around that age and it helped her communicate so much better. She is now 17 mos and has a large vocabulary.
  17. You probably want to wait on the 'sit down' part for a couple years. That being said, there is a lot you can do in the mean time. Most importantly, READ! Start talking about colors, shapes and numbers when you see them in your environment. It's great that you are planning ahead and want what is best for her. Use this time while she's so little to play and cuddle, it doesn't last long--they grow so quickly!
  18. We're heading out on vacation next week and I'm trying to put together some activities to keep my guys busy for the 20 hour drive. :auto: I'd like to find a site w/ pics of license plates from all 50 states that my guys can check off as they see them. I found a site where I can cut and paste each individual picture, but that will take forever! Anyone know of a site that has them all together? Thanks!:)
  19. Thanks! We just started it, but really like it so far.
  20. We just started this and I must be missing something. Many problems ask us to look at the birthday graph and answer questions. Where, or where is the birthday graph? Thanks! :)
