  1. I agree with this and received the same advice recently when returning my oldest to home-schooling. I am grateful that we slowed down and am cherishing my time with her now. If you go with an out of the box curriculum, there is a program called home school basic planner. Essentially it allows you to schedule and track assignments etc...so no matter what curriculum you use, I have found that it keeps me on track. I schedule a week at a time...the download for basic is free. I don't know if it would be worth keeping it otherwise. :D Good luck.
  2. We are using this currently. There is a teachers's guide...and I highly recommend, though it was the more expensive of the books to purchase, it was well worth it. We typically read to each other, work through the text and the workbook - utilize the quote for discussion (we have not yet started doing the experiments). It is very historically rich...had I known how comprehensive the material was I may have just purchased this as a complete curriculum (adding math only). The teachers manual has expansion exercises for every subject. At the end of each chapter, in addition to the quest guide, Sarah picks the idea that resonated the strongest, writes a sentence or two and draws a picture in her sketchbook... I hope this helps...we love it.
  3. My favorite teas are from this company..they are strong... http://www.rishi-tea.com/ I am a gun powder green tea girl...the kind you wisk at tea ceremony. I hate white/red I will occasionally drink black.
  4. You are correct! 571.1 was the answer for the last problem... Here is the problem for today: Each month, Kofi's cheese shop sells 68lbs of cheddar cheese and 36lbs of swiss cheese. He buys the cheddar in 10lb blocks for 96.50 each He buys the swiss in 3lb rounds for 37.00 each He then divides the cheese into smaller 4oz packages, which he sells for 4.50 each. He discards unsold cheese at the end of each month. How much profit does he make on cheddar cheese each year? Good Luck!!!
  5. I am officially starting the Math Problem of the Day Thread. Word Problem will be posted (middle school level or up) once per day w/ an answer given the next day (or when I can get on). Varied solutions are helpful..as it always amazes me to see how each student or parent tackles a problem. We hope you have fun learning and welcome the teaching that will come to us from this post. DRT related - An easy one today! Denver is about 1,020 miles from Chicago. The train from Chicago to Denver travels at an average speed of 77 miles per hour. If the train travels directly without any stops, how far will it have traveled after 7 hours and 25 minutes? Good Luck! :D
  6. Hi. :bigear:How are the rigors of the course work? I have a 10 Y/O that is in Pre-Algebra (almost complete) and will be moving towards Algebra this spring. Have you tried all formats? Teacher Led Online/Paper Online Which courses did you/your student prefer? How are the math topics presented? She has been using a combination of Alexs, Minute Math (Mental), Ko's Journey (Story-Based), and Word Problems (Written). Her Schedule looks something like this: M - Alex 45 minutes, Minute Math 5 minutes T- Ko's Journey 45 - 60 minutes, Minute Math 5 Minutes W - Word Problems 60 minutes (or more), Minute Math 5 minutes and then repeats... I would like a course that will demand more written work of her ...
  7. TJ Maxx had several types of rolling totes. I purchased one that had a "VERA BRADLEY" type print on it...I spent about $48.00 for it, perhaps a bit more w/ tax. Totally worth it.
  8. I think this is not something to be left to guessing... a GOOD therapist (professional - sorry not clergy) who specializes in child therapy, as a professionally licenced in psychologist should be consulted...
  9. I agree with this. Its not that he HAS or IS doing any of these things. However, a good therapist can check in to make sure that all is okay in his world. He may just be a young developer who is really interested...and it certainly is an INTERESTING subject...
  10. In a worst case scenerio, go "out" to dinner (pack a lunch) and spend what you would have on a nice meal/wine/etc...on a room. :o)
  11. Thanks for helping!!! She will get it, but definitely not without help. :o) That is part of why we are creating what we hope will become a HIVE project of a problem per day...the more strategies we see the more we will both learn! :D
  12. You both nailed it!!! Thanks for helping! Sarah is pretty sharp, she had the correct answer (or was on her way), but left off a zero some how. Thanks for helping and your words of encouragement!
  13. This may become a habit of mine, so I am considering turning my personal limitations in solving word problems (particularly when I don't have a solutions manual to go with this workbook) into a daily word problem challenge for those whose gifts are different from my own and feel like helping us :) Here it is straight from the book. Kelly runs around a 100m track each day of the weekend and around a 200m track on the weekend. She averages 100m in about 40 seconds. She usually runs about 50 minutes each day during the week and an hour each day on the weekend. Approximately how far does she run each week? Anyone that wants to play feel free to leave your solution. Or have your older math minded students play/teach/help. ;) Admitting to this limitation takes a big bite out of my ego...but that is likely good! :D
  14. I don't know about dislike...but I LOVE Bear in the Big Blue House.
  15. Not using a CM foundation, but thought I would add that Wal-mart has little note-card binders if you didn't want to completely give them up?
  16. I personally like the Story of Science. I find that it is comprehensive enough that I wish I hadn't ordered a history program. The teacher's guide (which I highly recommend) has connection exercises for every subject: English Math History Art etc... While most of these are geared for a classroom, it is easy to modify them so that your student or "classroom" could complete the tasks together. We are using the text, teachers manual and workbook. Honestly...with the exception of Math, this could almost be a complete curriculum with your own add ins. :) I just noticed your using SOS (sorry I missed that) mentioning these are fairly secular and definitely present the bible as myth in most cases.
  17. Lots of hormones and hunger happening in our household right now... definitely two that I like to consider and need reminding of!
  18. Hmmm...I am not trying to create a guessing game. I simply chose to leave the question open because most often when a question is open, it allows the person answering to provide more information. I am interested in hearing what is working for everyone; I don't believe there is a right or wrong answer..I truly am interested in everyone's thoughts. I find it really interesting. :auto: off to get DD2
  19. So, if your child continues to be disrespectful in-spite of your discussions and encouragement you do nothing?
  20. Perhaps I should have worded it this way: When your children are not working to your standards, throw a tantrum, are disrespectful, or simply choose not to work what is your course of action?
  21. Do you discipline in school? Why or why not? Examples please...
