  1. We use the plain notebooks and color code by kid...My oldest has all navy blue books, my middle son has all red books, and my youngest has all yellow books...We know right away who a book belongs to...I buy pretty, decorative ones for myself :-)

Yes, this is precisely what I was thinking of doing. I already buy according to our color code for them, but if we are doing the bulk of our work in notebooks or composition books, I'll need more of them per kid.

  3. Wow, you all are great! Thanks. I'm torn between a separate book for each subject and just using one until it's full...we could do one for all in a different color for each kid...they could decorate the cover and include dates within that book...a TOC that lists included books maybe.

Keep the ideas coming! This is all really helpful! :)

  4. We are doing AO 1 for first grade this year. I'm making some changes of course. We will go through our own Science course that I've chosen. I've got him doing MUS Alpha and EtC 3-4 (more if he's ready) for phonics...we are skipping any books that I don't think he will like. I have added some here and subtracted some there. We are going to try reading through the history and the literature that they've got there for the most part.

I've done TOG with a tiny person (I think DS6 was 2 maybe when we did it...I don't remember). It was a LOT. I had a really hard time keeping up with it and it just wasn't working. I ended up abandoning it and going to something else.  I think we read through SOTW together that year instead.

I haven't heard of Wayfarer's and am now off to look that one up, because you know, I'm addicted to curriculum... :leaving:

  5. Has anyone just used the $0.15 back-to-school-special notebooks for most of their schoolwork before? Or like the composition books? I have this idea that we could do Ambleside this year with lots of SCM narration ideas thrown in for good measure...I want to give the kids these composition books and have them fill them up, one for each subject. They'd date it, add the book information to the top, and then do some work related to the book they read right there in the composition book.  Do you think it would work? Does anyone have any visual examples of this that they could share with me? I'd really like to see that someone else has done it and HOW so that I can make it work! Thanks!

  6. And yet, he could still be an honest person, believing the policy he was told that after six months, the iPad or other items was his.  He may assume that the guests understand the policy as well.   If he had not contacted the OP, she'd never even know what happened to her iPad.  I don't see the hardened criminal type contacting the people they stole things from, sorry.

His wage plays a part, because if he's very low paid, buying his own iPad may be out of his realm.  Getting one via the hotel's lost and found policy is probably his only chance.  As far as he is concerned, he is following hotel policy and has done nothing wrong.  It's not stealing as far as the hotel is concerned, as they gave it to him after 6 months.

Regarding losing an iPad, there's a lot you can do.  If it still has power, you can find it using iCloud.  You can change the password, lock it, erase it, etc.  Even if no battery charge, you can enable it to do these things as soon as it has power.   So I'm really surprised that after 6 months, he was even able to find her info.

I'm not actually saying that he is a "hardened criminal type" honestly.  I think he is a guy that is a bit clueless and probably seriously sees no issue with his choices.  That doesn't make it right now though.

  7. I don't really blame the employee   If he's a room attendant, then he's probably extremely poorly paid.  Assuming he turned it in, and then waited the 6 months, I don't think it's really his fault that they did not contact you.  He's just following the policy as he understands it.

I do, however, blame the management and others involved.

I would take to social media at this stage....TripAdvisor, Facebook, Google reviews, Expedia.  I'd post the same situation everywhere I could.  I'd tweet about it.  I'd let the world know.  I would, however, make it clear that you do not blame Bimo? at all.  The issue is with how the hotel handled it, not the poorly paid employee whose so naive that he thought he could just ask you for the password.

But he CALLED her and told her he had her iPad and just wanted her password.  :confused1:  He definitely plays a very large part in this.

  8. Yeah, that's a VERY BAD experience, I don't blame you for being upset!

I think I would still try to fight it, take it higher up the chain.

    :iagree:

That's terrible. Keep complaining. Go higher up. Someone has to fix that!

  9. I've heard nothing but good things about Verizon and am getting ready to switch over to them.  I've been with Sprint for quite awhile now and the coverage is terrible in my area.  I've had ATT in the past and their customer service was less than stellar. DH has Verizon through work and rarely has any issues.  He even has decent cell service when we go on vacation (I have almost nothing there with Sprint!). Oh, and the cost of each of the big three is comparable here too.

  10. A friend taught me how to crochet (just the very basic single crochet stitch) about 12 years ago. I then taught myself how to do a ton of other things with crochet after that. I got quite good at it and then wanted to learn to knit. I looked for a friend to teach me, but ended up teaching myself with videos online. I think they each have their advantages, one isn't really harder than the other...though I guess it's easier to "see" the next stitch when knitting since it's on your needles...I prefer to crochet because, as you've said, it's just so much faster for me. I like the look of knit items better though.

  11. I'm guessing if they're at the point that their shed was repossessed, the "someone else" providing the attorney is the government, and they're using a public defender. They're just not saying that because they're not accepting things like food stamps.

I'd also guess that the whackadoodles taking to facebook are either also just as resentful of government, heard only one side of the story through someone like Alex Jones, or are also criminals or homeless.

What I can't figure out is how any woman would let her children live in that way, or why she would resent having a well & septic system, let alone not use them.  Can someone in the area on well water please comment on what the costs would be to have the well tested & used?

We just moved into our house and it has a brand new well and septic system (installed by DH because that is his actual job and he's awesome ;) ). The new septic cost the bank more than $30K. That included the new well (I think). The testing of the water fell on us. Because DH is in this field, he only had to pay for the actual testing so I believe that was around $100 but takes some time to get the results back.  If things don't look good, you can end up needing a new well/septic (see above quotes) or needing to treat the water (I believe our treatment system was a couple thousand).  Does that help?

ETA: I would assume that these prices vary based on location in the country. We're in the Northeast, in PA.

  12. Well, seeing her hopes and dreams in pinterest photos, I would say she is struggling with reality.

Not that I needed to see the pinterest photos of what she wants to realize that she is struggling with reality.

Anyone that listened to the audio recording or any read any of her other posts might have made that guess also.

I really hope they find what is best for the kids.

Yes, I think she is too. I've been reading about this off and on a lot today trying to figure out what's going on, what's not being said, and how on earth it relates to homeschooling (my conclusion is that it DOESN'T relate to homeschool FYI)...

This whole thing is just sad.  I think that having CPS involved in their lives is the absolute right thing here. If they were reported, CPS is required by law to investigate whether they think there is any truth to the claims or not (these pictures prove that there is truth to the claims though).

The kitchen tour video was what put me over the edge. That's just gross. How can she cook anything in there in a clean way? I'm surprised they aren't sick more often!

So sad...hopefully the kids will get the help they truly need now.

  13. Breakfast at our house is made by each person on his or her own.  The kids are 15, 12, 9, and 6. Things they ALL make:

    bowls of cereal

    oatmeal

    toast with various toppings

    fruit of varying types

Things the older boys can make:

    eggs

anything else they can think of that uses the stove or oven (I have no good examples for this right now  )

I almost never make breakfast here ever. If they're hungry, they need to make it on their own.  The same goes for lunch here actually. They warm up leftovers, make sandwiches, etc.

  14. "So what are we eating for dinner?" This question usually comes while I am making dinner and they can SEE what I'm making very clearly. It's also asked at least four times, once by each kid. I've started saying, "Go ask ______, I just told him."

All the voices that my kids insist on creating around here are also on the list. Some have been banned, like the Gwibble, spelled GWBL, and stands for "guy with bad luck." They made him up and he has the most annoying voice. Now they have taken to calling him "The Doofus." The Doofus has been banished to the basement. They were under the impression that I couldn't tell that it was the same guy, different voice. Sigh...

  15. I really really dislike dogs. They shed, slobber, poop and smell bad.

But, I have a SN kid who is emotionally attached to television. When we turn it off (there are time limits) he will sometimes get very upset about us taking away his best friend (don't suggest that we remove it completely). Very upset.

I wonder if a dog or cat would give him a healthy emotional attachment??

I wouldn't get a dog if you detest them. It doesn't sound like it's the best idea for your family...

  16. For this friend I'd switch to "Ah Fuddruckers !!!" She can't possible object to you naming a restaurant. :-D

The funny thing is, she didn't like "oh my goodness" because it was too close to OMG which is absolutely out of the question. So I switched to "oh my word" because how can she possibly object to that and I was told that it says in John that "the word is in God and the word is God" so I couldn't say that either. Sigh...there is no winning. I guess I need to refrain from surprise. ;)
