  1. I'm a Christian. I see nothing wrong with yoga or karate. I skimmed the article very briefly.  When you're to "meditate," use it as prayer time.  Focus on God. Commit that time to God.  I think too often "religion" makes things wrong that just don't matter.  ;)

  2. I would like to do the puppy training ourselves, honestly.  I don't have the extra funds for hiring our own trainer, though I would happily do some puppy obedience school/classes together. :) I like the idea of grabbing some books on the subject. I'm really not sure why that didn't occur to me. Lol.

  3. So DH and I have been married thirteen years now and in our entire thirteen years together weren't interested in owning a dog.  Part of the problem (the bulk of the problem) was that we didn't have the house or the yard for it.  But we have now moved AND we have older kids who can actually be a large part of caring for that dog.

Here's where you all come in.  I'm looking at getting a female labrador retriever (or even a mix).  I'm thinking about going to a shelter and finding one there...the cost would be lower and typically includes the spaying/neutering of the puppy...there's also some breeders around us though and we could look at those as well...thoughts?  What should we be looking for? How do we go about choosing the right puppy for our family? We want it to be a good fit. What do we need to be sure to do to help this puppy turn into a functional and friendly and obedient dog?

We are home almost every day and even when we go out, it's not for very long- a few hours tops. My kids are kids. Sometimes loud, sometimes not.  We also have two guinea pigs as pets...

Thanks for all your help! :)

PS- SHH! My kids don't know anything, so please don't say anything to them if you know us IRL.

  4. I would have flipped out.

    Pulled over.

    Dressed them down.

    Turned right back around.

And returned them all to their parents with reports of how unacceptable they'd behaved.

That's well beyond the bounds of a little teen silliness and straight into rude, snotty disrespect. Nope. No flipping way.

This. There is no way I'd put up with that kind of behavior in my car. I'd have pulled over, given them ONE warning, and then turned it right around and dropped them back off telling their parents exactly what happened.  I'd still do it if I were you now. Who cares if a bridge is burned with these kinds of girls? Your daughter is better off without them in my opinion.

I'm so sorry you had to deal with this! I'd be so upset if I were in your place! :(

  5. Heehee--Well, I think I'm going to go by Grandma; ddil's mom is Russian (in Russia for the time being) and I think she wants to be Babushka, but I'm not sure.

    I guess I could be Grammy B.

Hey, that's a good name for a Hiver granny, eh?

A couple of years ago, DH and I went away for our anniversary and ate at one of those "Japanese" restaurants where they cook the food right there on the table and you sit with strangers. We met this sweet couple there from the south somewhere who'd just moved to that area. We were talking and it came up that there kids call their grandmas "Precious" and "Sunshine." I told DH I wanted a unique grandma name too one day and declared that I would one day be "Rainbow Unicorn." I broke this news to our children, who were not amused. And while DD DOES call me Rainbow Unicorn (and DH is Pappy Weirdo, lol) when referencing us to her guinea pigs, she also tells me that I will NOT be called that by her actual children. We'll see... ;)

  6. I have four kids. DH and I decided when we were dating that we wanted four. I was happy with four, which was good because I had four c-sections and that last one was the one that HAD to be it, according to my doctor (no longer safe for me to be pregnant). And besides, pregnancy isn't really my thing.  I do it because the end result is a baby that I really want.  I WANT to enjoy pregnancy, I just don't sadly.

And then we were asked to adopt a baby.  A girl. I had always wanted a sister for my DD. We prayed about it. We decided that we could and would do five. We were happy. We were excited. And then she died in utero (mom had diabetes and some major complications) and I was devastated. I was NOT ready to be done. I NEEDED to have a fifth child.  I started looking into getting pregnant again even though it was basically impossible and my doctor had told me already that it wasn't safe.  I looked into adopting again.  I was upset by every pregnant or adopting person around me. I thought having another baby would fix it because isn't that how we fix things here in America? If you break something or lose something you love, replace it.  Ignore the sad feelings. Ignore the ache. Fill it with something new and shiny.  But this time I couldn't. I was incapable of filling that horrible empty place. I wallowed in it for at least two years (I had great days and weeks of course, then a bad day or two where I was sad and missed my baby girl).  Basically that loss taught me how to properly mourn a loss. Don't get me wrong. I still am sad that I don't have her sometimes, but I'm also at peace with it. I have finally come to a place where I'm okay with being done even though I wasn't for a long time. I don't need more babies to make me happy.  I need to choose it for myself. And besides, in the next several years there's a good chance I could be a grandma (I've told my kids that my grandma name will be Rainbow Unicorn. They are not amused. ).

So all that to say, I have been in the place where I NEEDED a fifth baby.  A fifth is not in the cards for us.  And I'm okay with that. Prayers that you can get to that place too! :grouphug:

  7. When you unfollow someone, you stop seeing their status updates. Question: do they keep getting yours?

Yes, they do. They would have to unfollow YOU to stop getting yours OR you would have to block them specifically from seeing your updates (not block them from your Facebook, that would unfriend and make you not exist for them).

  8. Why does the buyer think that a plumber will even remember details from a job he/she did ten years ago?

Some would.  My husband can remember jobs he's done over the phone just hearing the address...super detailed stuff. Lol. There are definitely plumbers who can remember.

Even so though, this is a weird buyer.

We just sold our house.  The buyer had the inspector out, got the report.  They checked out the report and talked to us about it. They then DID get a second part that they were awaiting (radon testing results). We had several guys out that did estimates for various things they wanted addressed at some point...

The strangest thing I think I see about this is that they know who did what and when AND they are trying to talk to them...how do they know who did the work and when they did it?

  9. If you do decide to unfollow her and don't want her to know, be sure to check on her page periodically so that she doesn't post something important and you miss it...and then she asks you about it. Haha. Whenever I've had that happen, I just say that I must have missed that post and blame Facebook. ;)

  10. UPDATE!!

I have my iPad back.  They shipped it out very quickly.  Also, they had a meeting to discuss hotel policy and they have now changed the policy.  Owners will be contacted when something like a cell phone, laptop or iPad is left behind.  If the owner cannot be found they will keep the item for 6 months and then destroy it so that the personal information cannot be passed on to someone else.  I'm so happy that they have changed this policy.  They have even reached out to five other hotels in their region and so far three of those hotels are changing their policies as well.  And they're sending me a written apology (which I appreciate) and a gift (which I did not ask for and definitely didn't require, but will gratefully accept nonetheless).

I'm really happy to have my iPad back and I'm really happy they figured out the policy needed to be changed.

    :yay:

This is SUCH a happy ending! I'm so glad they got you your laptop, that they are changing the policy, and that they are sending you something extra for all the trouble. :)

But what happened to Bimo? ;)

  11. We just moved and the kitchen is one of my favorite things about this place! :)

    Things I love:

    - Granite counters

    - Double ovens (also convection, be still my heart)

    - electric cooktop with changeable inserts

    - central location, can see almost everywhere in the main part of the house from there

    - two different sinks (one is a regular double sink, the other is a prep sink)

    - quiet dishwasher

    - big, deep cabinets

    - the lazy susan

    - the refrigerator

    Things I don't love:

    - the lazy susan has to go here too, because we pinch fingers...lol

    - the actual water and ice dispenser...the ice doesn't always want to come out and the water dispenser space doesn't allow all of our cups to fit.

    - no outlets on one side of our kitchen

  12. Sigh. I knew this was going to happen. I put a lot of thought and effort into making vegetarian recipes and buying yummy ingredients for salads etc. for the last few days, and she's vetoed all of them (though she did give most of them a fair try). She said, only half-jokingly, that she didn't want to be a vegetarian who eats vegetables, she just wanted to eat "not-meat." I really can't co-sign that!

She wants to be vegetarian (and possibly eventually vegan) mainly for humane reasons, and I'm happy to support her along the way. We could all use a change in our eating habits, and eating more vegetables is a great start. But I can't allow her to exist on Terra chips and fake "meat" products and pasta and bread, can I? Oh, and vegan marshmallows. Those went over well too

I would love any suggestions anyone has. Has anyone had a kid like this (or been a newbie veg*n themselves) who passed through this phase and branched out? I have a whole week's worth of vegetarian food planned, so she's going to be mighty hungry in a few days, I think!

    TIA.

I didn't read the other replies yet, but wanted to give my thoughts on this.  First, I'd figure out which vegetables your DD actually knows that she likes right now and which ones she is interested in trying out.  I would enlist her help shopping, coming up with recipes, and cooking.  I would insist that she eat a well balanced vegetarian diet.  Becoming a carbs and fruit only child is not good, not healthy, and not okay for the long term.  I get her reasoning, but she either needs to choose to do this well and think it out (with your help) or she needs to take a step back and eat like the rest of you for awhile until she is prepared to make good food choices. ;)

(PS, while this sounds all straight forward and overly honest as you read it, please keep in mind that my actual tone is one of concern for your DD's health if she doesn't make some changes fast and one of empathy for you as the mom who is trying to deal with it on the fly; I'm pretty sure my turn is coming with my own DD in the next few years as she is a serious animal lover).

  13. I love to have kids drop by to play (although I nearly always send them all outside) but I also have zero problem telling them they need to go home when I'm ready for that. It's okay to tell them to go away in the nicest and clearest possible way. :)

    This.

We had neighbor kids next door for 12 years.  We loved those kids like our own. However, there was more than one occasion when I was ready for them to head back home. I'd head to wherever they were, clap my hands, smile, and announce that it was time to clean up as kids A and B were going to need to head home.  :)

  14. I hate that, but the worst was when an office told me my appointment time was at 11:15 when it was actually at 11:30.  Since I'm never late and like to arrive a few minutes early, it meant I was there at 11:05ish.  I wasn't a happy camper.

This is what our doctors regularly do to everyone in our area. They TELL you one time and then "confirm" with the adjusted "fifteen minutes early" time the day before. Annoying.

  15. There are twin girls at our church (not mine, but they are 15 and I've known them since they were 2). They swear they don't look anything alike. Lol. Now, arguably, one twin weighs about 10-15 pounds more than the other so they have that difference. They also have two different hair cuts, one with short and the other long (and always done in some way). They definitely have different personalities but they STILL look alike. It's obvious to me that they are identical twins (many in our church can't tell the difference between them). So, OP, you aren't alone. Other twins swear the same thing! :)

  16. I'm pretty sure I've seen those at Walmart during back to school sales before.  Perhaps some of my local public schools require them so they are available then.  What subjects do you think you will use these for?

That's exactly where we've gotten them from actually. I've never paid $6 for one either. Lol.  I'm not sure why they are so pricey on Amazon...

I plan to use them for literature (pictures for narrations, copywork after he gives me an oral narration, maybe a sentence or two of his own); Science (we do Apologia so a picture and something interesting from his reading for the day); and History (again, more pictures and maybe an interesting fact or date or person).

We will probably not use them for math (we'll see) and I know we'll just write in our EtC books as I have the workbooks here already.

  17. I just bought my son a 5 star 5 subject notebook.  We've divided it up into English composition, Grammar (French and English), History (mix of two languages), Science (mix of two languages), and Literature Narrations (French).

I have not had a loose school paper float through the house in two weeks!!!!!!  Now, I need to figure out how to do this for my soon-to-be first grader, and I'll be in heaven.

If you figure that out please post about it, because I have a soon to be first grader as well.

So I actually have an idea for my rising first grader. I'm planning on getting several of these for him: http://www.amazon.com/Mead-Primary-Journal-Creative-09554/dp/B00LT54P06/ref=sr_1_1?s=office-products&ie=UTF8&qid=1433358066&sr=1-1&keywords=mead+primary+journal

This way there is space for copywork, pictures, etc throughout the book without the worry of tight lines that he can't possibly write in. ;)

We have some that we've used in the past already so I know I like them.

  18. This link shows how to make a Book of Centuries with a regular notebook: http://www.charlottemasonhelp.com/2009/07/how-and-when-to-begin-book-of-centuries.html

I think that's what we'll be doing next year.  My FIL just gave us a big box of composition notebooks!

In the past, we've used the notebooks for most subjects including grammar, writing, art, science, etc.  We use graph paper for math, but you can also use the regular paper turned sideways (to give them colums for lining up their place values).

Oh, I love this idea! Thanks for sharing it!!
