  1. I had a big fight with my home ec teacher by accident when I was a teen.  We were making cookies.  I took the raw egg, cracked it against the bowl edge and then put the contents in the bowl.  The teacher started yelling (more like screeching) at me that I was supposed to crack an egg with a knife.  "Everyone" knew that.  It really really startled me.  But I took the next raw egg, grabbed the butter knife and hit it.  Egg  and eggshell went everywhere.  I was not trying to be a smart aleck or anything.  I'd just never done it that way before and didn't know how much force to use.  The teacher was almost purple with rage.  She said "I'm sure your mother hasn't had that happen."  I had a really small voice as I said (again knowing this would anger her further), "My mom cracks it on the bowl rim."  (I still crack my eggs on the rim and think of that teacher every single time.)

With a knife?? I don't know anyone who does that...I crack mine on the counter. She'd go crazy on me.

  2. oh - and Costco gets sheepskin boots in august/sept.  they are really quite warm (if you're not talking routinely subzero temps) even when the surface got wet in the snow.  that's what I wear in the winter.  love them for errand running, just slip them on and my feet are warm.  much cheaper than uggs. (and real sheepskin, not acrylic like most knockoffs.)

This is what I was going to suggest.  It seems like in southern PA, the common winter-wear is North Face coat, black leggings, sheepskin boots with boot socks, and infinity scarves.

  3. That's how I read it at first, but rereading that sentence I'm not sure.  It could be taken two different ways, that Jill and Jessa will be the only Duggars on the special or that Jill and Jessa are two of the victims/survivors that will be on the show and the rest of the Duggar family will be involved as well.  At any rate, it is clear that is is not going to *just* be about the Duggar family and that Jill and Jessa will not be the only abuse victims on it.

The bolded is how I understood it. I think it's good that TLC will have a special on this, but I don't know that it's a great idea to feature the Duggar girls. I wonder if they agreed, on their own, to be featured or if they were coerced by the family?

  4. I have four kids, and a friend of mine (white) has two (biracial) kids.  We were on a bus together coming back from the pool and a woman said, "Oh, are you a day care?"  Nope.  "Oh, are you nannies?"  No, these are our kids, these four are mine, those two are hers.  "But those two are adopted?"  NO!  "But that's not possible?"  Um.  Yes it is.  My friend was livid.

My brother's wife is black, and their four kids all look quite different.  One clearly biracial, one who is relatively dark, and two who, through some weird gene combo, look vaguely Indian.  SIL gets questions ALL THE TIME about which of them are her "real" children.  It makes her insane.

The worst is that people feel entitled to ask, even in front of the children themselves!!!  Sheesh.

Maybe she should look at them, dead seriously, and whisper, "The older two are real, the smaller two are actually robots undercover for the government, but they don't know it. DON'T tell anyone, even them!"  And then walk away.

  5. Ugg.  If you were in dh's family the child would be named William or Louis.........seems like that is about the only 2 choices out there.  Dh's father was William, he is a junior, he has 4 more Uncle Bills and each of them have a Bill junior.  Then there is our Louis, Uncle Louis, Louis, Little Louie and his son Louis.  Our ds's bio father is named Louis AND ds has a brother named Louis and he is named Louis-----so dad named 2 of his boys Louis ????

To add to the William thing, MIL's maiden name is Williams so almost everyone has the first or last name of William(s).

Good luck on making a choice.  Chose what YOU want.

    This made me LOL.

  6. Wait, your MIL wouldn't name her and FIL's kid his name and now she expects you to do it? She's nuts. Tell them all to have their own babies to name and back off yours.

    Lol at the above!

On another note, I have a story for you. MY maternal grandma had attempted to start a middle name trend in our family when she had my mom. You see HER middle name is Louise as is my mom's. They were both named for a great-great grandma or something that I never met.  I personally never liked my middle name, which is also Louise.  Maybe that has to do with the fact that I only ever heard it when I was in trouble! :glare:  Either way, when I was expecting our one and only girl, we were choosing names. Needless to say, our first name choice did NOT match the middle name Louise nor does it really work well with our last name. I was looking at variations on the name- Eloise being my favorite of the options- when my grandma brought up the fact that my daughter really NEEDED to have the middle name Louise. I told her my thoughts and she told me she didn't like it, it wasn't the same, and it wasn't an acceptable alternative. Sigh...so we gave her a totally different middle name that is completely unrelated to "Louise" in every possible way.

FYI: She got over it. ;)

  7. I don't have anything super helpful to add to this except that I have flown several times in the last few years and can't recall one time that we actually GOT peanuts or any other food on our flight. We were offered drinks only. Some were short flights (no beverages either on those), some were longer. Nothing...

  8. Like peanut butter, eggs and fish?

I understand that some kids have food allergies, but why are other kids being banned from bringing their foods?

(Parents of kids with allergies, don't attack me. Serious question. Especially pb, realistically how many kids have issues if pb is in the same room?)

Think about how quickly the stomach virus (the barfing one) spreads in a school. A sick kid touches something and another touches it, getting sick themselves.  They then go on to touch other things and infect other kids.

It's the same for a kid with a deadly peanut allergy. He doesn't have to just eat it to be get sick and possibly die (and the epi-pen IS going to save them typically, but seriously, those things are expensive and a deathly allergic kid shouldn't have to have near-death experiences so that MY child can eat peanut butter at school).  A kid who eats peanut butter at school can carry the peanut oils around with them, "infecting" other objects they touch and inadvertently cause a reaction in another child.

I don't have children with deathly allergies.  I doubt there are many in one school. HOWEVER, if there is even ONE, that's enough reason to keep it out of the building. A kid should be as safe as possible at school, right? I would hope that if it were my child, others would oblige and do their part to keep my child safe too. :)

ETA: The glitter analogy above is a great one! Love it!

  9. My 12YO watches weird Youtube video series, Good Mythical Morning for example. He also plays on his tablet, makes annoying voices with his older brother, spends a lot of time teaching himself to play the piano...he does chores for me, sometimes he will go outside...I'm still reading Harry Potter out loud through the summer, so he listens to that as well.

  10. Why will the vacation be painful for the adults?

Can't you plan a vacation that will be fun for everyone?

    :iagree:

Why not make sure the vacation is fun for everyone?

As for the boring stuff, I am procrastinating my boring stuff right now by posting HERE.  I suppose I should get to the cleaning of the house and figure out a dinner plan before it's too late...

  11. Hmm...DH works an average of 60 hours a week and that includes ONLY the hours he is spending at work, not at home. If you factor in the emails, phone calls, etc, he works far more than that. He is the general manager for a waste management company so I guess it's to be expected, but it has almost always been like this. He is always on call. His phone is never off and never away from him. It's normal for us at this point. I stay home with the kids, no out-of-the-house paying job for me. ;)

  12. Things about our old house that drove us crazy and made us ready to move a few months ago:

    1. white carpet in the dining room (I mean, really, who thinks that's a good plan?)

    2. a CARPETED bathroom :confused1:

    3. walk through master bedroom (no, just no, lol)

    4. one bathroom

    5. attached to our neighbors who took advantage of that fact with their loud music anytime they decided they were mad at us (and they never actually told us, haha)

    6. in town

    7. old and, therefore, drafty

There is only one thing that I wish were different about our current house:

    1. there is no central air. We have window units that we haven't installed yet as it just hasn't been hot enough to warrant it yet.

  13. I had four impacted wisdom teeth removed under sedation when I was 16-17 years old. It took about a week to feel semi-normal (I had them out on the Tuesday or Wednesday before Thanksgiving break and went back to school the following Tuesday when school resumed if I remember correctly.  But my mouth was swollen at least another week after that. And as others have said, I had to go back for follow-up appointments as well.
