  1. Please don't quote this post. Oldest child J, is about to graduate in a couple of weeks. J was homeschooled for the entire education, until last year and half where J dual enrolled in local public school and took junior college classes through the h.s. as well as core and elective courses. J continued a couple homeschool courses during this time. J has aced every course there with the highest gpa in the school. J will be attending a homeschool grad ceremony commemorating all the years of homeschooling and the public school one as well. The school seems to be offering to adopt J's homeschool transcript into the public school transcript record and offer a full public school diploma at the grad ceremony. If this was offered to your child would your encourage taking this? Why or why not? Btw, J is admitted at the college of J's choice for the fall. College has seen the public school and homeschool transcripts separately, Thank you!! X posted at college forum
  2. I love my Galaxy 7. I have an iPad too and I really think Android has outdone Apple on user intuitiveness. I really loathe my IPad and only use it when I need to read long articles.
  3. I second or third the BM Complexion Rescue. The gel is awesome. It goes on cool and when I feel it drying on, I stop blending. I put it on with a special brush that I just L.o.v.e. I probably go through the product faster, but I love it. I also aged out of BM mineral powder and I'm never going back. Now, I'm starting something new after being at ULTA over the weekend and it's called IT. A cc cream. I love this more bc it removed about 4 steps. I used to use Stila color corrector and IT takes care of that to correct for redness. Also I don't really need powder to set it as much like I felt with Comp. Rescue. With CR I felt like I needed to fix it sooner. I too have oily skin. So this is my new one. Love the better coverage!
  4. That's great news!!!!😄😄
  5. Is there a place like this or say College Confidential, that one can ask questions about their high school kids that plan on playing college sports, especially basketball? Thanks!
  6. Would like to message you about my son's current team options if so. We are at a fork in the road. Thanks!
  7. Anyone have any experience with PLATO classes to share? Thanks!
  8. Thanks Natalie, How stressed out are kids about grades? I know there is no grade inflation and the kids work hard. I'm sure it varies a lot between kids. But some campuses have a more intense climate than others. How much of a presence is the frat system? That's not for DD, and I'm wondering if it would be grating. What would your son say are his favorite aspects about the school?
  9. Wow, Arcadia...what does it include? I'm assuming there are tutors, online or private schooling costs in there somewhere.
  10. Barb, No worries! I probably should have said this is not a how much does it cost to homeschool post. We've been homeschooling for 18 years, and I just wanted to see how our costs compared to others. 😊
  11. Well, not really for us at least. I just looked at our actual costs on curriculum that we actually use per child, per annum. We have many children, but I looked at the costs of our most recent year. I looked at it by subject and included whether it was online, boxed or textbooks. If curriuculum was shared, I made the appropriate divisions.
  12. If you break it down per child, approximately how much are you spending on curriculum per year? Just asking about curriculum, online classes and materials, not transportation costs etc. Rough estimates appreciated too! Thanks
  13. Have you found any decent online options for at least one or two courses in your state? I'm not talking about the K12 virtual academy type of programs. Ds needs an online public school course to play sports. So far he's taken two through our state's virtual academy. Pretty bad imho. I just found PLATO via Edmentum. The reviews aren't great. Any personal experience with this or another p.s. online program that is acceptable? There have been some very good homeschool online providers we've used, but it must be a government accepted one for h.s. sports. Thanks!!!
  14. Michigan State, while a large school, has a vibrant and strong college ministry through University Refomed Church, PCA.
  15. Cedarville has more of a Baptist flavor as an FYI, bc you said your family is non-denom. Grove City is more Presby, but I think there are less outward manifestations of Presbys if that makes sense.
  16. I don't think Calvin is what you are looking for, but ymmv. Hillsdale's faith community is thriving. We were recently there. They are breaking ground on a gorgeous chapel as of today. But more importantly, the kids we spent time with seemed to have a genuine and vibrant faith. I would also put in a good vote for Grove City. Patrick Henry is still not regionally accredited. I'm not sure if the have the programs you are looking for. Happy hunting!!!!
  17. I think this is what he took already in October. More tests and coming in an extra day to just fill out the preliminary info...😠Maybe another simulated test is good practice. But he could also take the practice tests online. Anybody else doing this twice in one year?
  18. My sophmore son took the PSAT in October. My understanding is this when everyone takes it. We just got a notice from the p.s.that he's to take it next week too, in April. Anybody else doing this who has kids in or dual enrolled in p.s.? Why would this be? I thought next time would be in October as a Jr. And this would be when it counts for NM. Thank you!!!
  19. Thanks SummerDays. This starts reaaaaally early in the morning so he can still do his sports. I forgot he likes Northwestern too which is super selective.
  20. They've had grads go to MIT, Cornell, military academys, polytechnic institutes and lots of other 4 year universities. It looks like grads from colleges go on to engineering... I'm not sure how many go straight to the workforce after h.s. yet. When we visited, the kids seemed especially bright and happy to learn there. It is totally separate from the career tech program, which is more vocational in nature. And at least at this career tech, the kids did not seem academically motivated. My understanding is that on a public h.s. transcript it won't say he went to a STEM academy, but the classes are merely listed. I'm sure if it has a good rep, I could note it in his homeschool transcript. (He's dual enrolled at the public school but still has homeschool courses.) Thanks again for any input!
  21. Oh that's a bummer. Not good at all!
  22. My sophomore son has been encouraged to apply to a public high school STEM/career tech type program that is suppose to be top in the nation (I'm assuming for public schools-this is all new to me). It emphasizes engineering, manufacturing and robotics with classes in college level calculus and physics. The program is around 50% public school enrollment so he can still do some homeschooling courses. He's not sure what he what he wants to go into or where he wants to go to college, but aviation, aeronautical engineering, biochemistry, physics, mechanical engineering and football coaching are his interests. I know many of these programs are geared to sending kids right into the workforce after high school. How would the Ivies, colleges like Hillsdale and Grove City or the Air Force Academy look at such a program for the junior and senior high school years? I know I would need to make sure he's not getting cut short in the Language Arts. Thanks!!
